Has anyone seen the HS Basketball Team on ESPN2?

Post by Peake »

Tonight there was a special on Boys High School in NY. Did anone check out the coach? I could care less that she was female, but she was wearing a black tee-shirt with some gold panther or something on it at the game.

I know it is New York, but have some class and look like an acutal coach (especiall with ESPN following you around).

I loved her after the game speech as well. Nothing but pointing out individuals for the loss to Lincoln. They were leading by two in OT and they only had 4 players on the court (who happend to be the best defender). If I am not mistaken it is the coach/asst. coaches responsibility to take care of things like that.

I played for Norm Persin---I can tell you one thing---I am very grateful for the actual coaching I recieved. What I was watching wasn't good coaching (especially on the defensive end).

Thats just pretty much how inner city ball is Peake! No defense and good athletes! There probably isnt one of those kids that could play for Stormin Norman! Those schools just simply win on overwhelming talent! You saw what happened to them in the city title game though,They hit a team that did have some discipline and they got crushed! ;-)

If a coach like persin, barrick or scarberry had some of those players...they wouldn't just be considered the best coaches of the area they may be considered the best of the nation, just maybe!

I'm sorry, but did you just put Barrick and Scarberry in the same breath as Norm?

pretty sure I did... barrick has just as much success if not more than persin "14 seasons, 276-61,9 soc titles,12 sectional championships, 7 district championships, 3 district runners-ups, 3 regional titles, and 1 Division III state runners-up....... and scarberry Takes kids that are no where near as athletically gifted as other schools and turns them into competitors every year at Northwest, he takes teams that shouldn't even be on the same floor as their competition and wins with them ex. - NW beating Burg at burg- NW beating Oak Hill last year-, and when he coached at Rock Hill with a dominant team-"he dominated"....give either one of them chesapeake or the re-did oak hill squad and they could do the same thing not saying Persin is bad in fact he's great but so aren't the other 2!

Oh Rick Barrick, my bad---complete brain fart. Yes I agree 100,000%.

I am sorry but Scarberry is not in the same league as the other two.

If you want to compare satistics with those two, we can all day. I don't know when Scarberry's "dominated". I am sorry but I highly disagree with anything you are saying about Scarberry. If I am not mistaken Persin took a bad Oak Hill program to the Regionals in year 1. I am not really sure what Scarberry has done if anything with the NW program. If beating a few good teams in the regular season adds up to success, then that is a pretty low measuring stick IMO.

Persin at Chesapeake----20 years---record (369-70)---Regionals 9 times---Regional Finals---6 times---15 conference titles, including 11 straight (1 off the state record)---48 game regular season winning streak from 92-93---two AP state titles---OHSBCA Coach of the Year 4 times---not sure if he has eclipsed 600 total wins yet, but he must be close or passed the mark already.

you're right his #'s don't add up...but I believe there is much more to a coach than the # of wins you have, I walked away from the game with a new respect for the sport and much more prepared for the road ahead of me than if he hadn't coached me, and to me that is what makes a coach truly great which is kinda what this topic was about careless coach coaching careless players with overwhelming talent, and maybe im bias because scar coached me but i believe he made me 100x better ball player than what a careless coach would have done for me, he really made me a good player.....and as for oak hill im not really impressed because that's not really oak hill

Rock Hill dominated the OVC when Scarberry was there????Now they had a dominate team in the late 80s and early 90s when Scarberry's little brother and David Hopper played there but he wasnt the coach of those teams it was Carl Large!Fairland and Chesapeake were the dominant teams in the early 90s and then in the mid 90s I think the Hill won one conference title maybe 94???Peake was down in 94 and had a losing season,In 95 Fairland won it and then Peake ran out the rest of the 90s winning it every year!

I completly understand what you are saying about being more then just a coach. I respect that. I think he is a good coach, but not a great coach in my mind. In the making you a better person department---he pobably is a great coach.

He sure had a way of livening up a game. Almost a mix of basketball and WWE with the folding chairs and flying oranges.

Talk about reality TV, if he had a show it would be a guaranteed hit. He was priceless, and is missed by so many.

Yes he was a character!Bottom line though OVC teams now would have been like a deer in the headlights back in those days!Hopper and Scarberry at Rock Hill,Hughes and Ramey at Fairland,Edwards and the Dempseys at Peake and Randall Pennington at South Point!I am tellin ya the OVC was like going through a war back then! :122246
