Another good thing about it is,for Ironton fans or former Ironton girls basketball fans like myself will be getting to see Mandy Boykin and Jessica Waddle play at SSU when their Georgetown team comes to town...I even went to school at SSU at one time and i'm sad to say never attended a Women's basketball game there.I finally will in the near future.

Good move for Shawnee.
Rio was accepted earlier this year.
Mid-South is a good league.

Good move if Shawnee wants to mprove and go to the next level. Being a grad of Mount Vernon, was glad to hear that Mount Vernon is moving to NCAA D II. The old AMC will be splitting up or at the very least downsizing.

Good Luck to Shawnee in the future.

Just like many schools, it will be up to the board of trustees and administration on football. I am a proud alumni of Mount Vernon nazarene University and every year the issue of starting football is brought up at the board of trustees meetings. I love football and really think it brings a small community/college community together, but i have always opposes the idea at MVNU. The financial aspect alone deters my thinking. Let alone the fact that it takes many years to build a football program. Maybe that would be different at Shawnee. They obviously would be priveledged to some great facilities if they chose to start a program.
it ttakes alot of dollars to do it right and many small universities just dont have the $$$

"Former Ironton girls basketball fan?" Grow up BP and get a life. Your post are negative or bashing somebody if its not in favor of your family member or friend. Find something to do with your time instead of prowl this site all the time.

I'm not bashing anyone.Just saying get out and support these girls when they come to town.I dont have any reason to root for Ironton or Chillicothe anymore.I still have the ultimate respect for both schools and still want them to do well.

85inside,
I agree with some of your points regarding football and MVNU (I'm not a MVNU alum, but am a supporter through my local Nazarene church).
As far as Shawnee is concerned, with the construction of the new football facility for Portsmouth H.S., I could see Shawnee doing a little more serious study about establishing a football program.

Shawnee really had no choice but to join the Mid South. I don't, however, think it was a choice they would have made if not forced. Competing with the likes of Georgetown, Pikeville etc... They will struggle even more so than in the past. Georgetown is basically a D1 cloaked in D2 clothing.

Shawnee will not have to revisit the idea of football. They have recently and the cost is just unattainable, particuarly in this economy. When you are cutting professors you can't add coaches!

As for the MSC, it will be a new challenge for Shawnee. They were easily the largest school in the AMC so now maybe they will be forced to improve! They wouldn't have left if not forced I agree.

Georgetown is a NAIA D1 school so they are not cloaked in anything.

I wasn't aware the situation was that bad at Shawnee. D you know what their enrollment figure is?

Enrollment is fine.... Steadily increasing... But the state has been under a 2 year tuition freeze so they can'treally increase tuition and then the economy is the way it is.

SSU is great about constantly upgrading facilities and growing and a lot of what has happened is their projects have been put on hold.... i.e founders plaza and turf soccer field.....

They are just being cautious about spending.... Every University is facing it... Football is extremely difficult to fund during good economic times so it would be near impossible to start now... They have no space for workout facilities, coaches offices, practice facilities....If someone came along and wanted to dump 10 mil or so on a team then they would consider it, not to mention title 9 has to be observed...

How is Title IX not being observed now? Volleyball for women, none for men. I believe everything else is at least even is it not? Wouldn't football make this square?

Title IX goes much deeper than just equal number of sports. It takes in to account number of athletes among other things. So many schools aren't in compliance and no one makes a fuss about it.

Kentucky Christian University seems to be doing ok just starting football. I believe this is the second year for them. There is hope!

I agree with witness protection the facilities are in place at PHS all that is needed is strong local support,a team which would be filled easily and be competitive, and a coach.[curt clifford?] [lutz?] who would you pick or someone else.Portsmouth leases the field so could Shawnee and think of the economic boost it would be to the area.Maybe a RED LOBSTER or some others would develop in the area and there is need of another hotel downtown. levee lizzards live
