its a fair/unfair rule for youth b-ball.

got a question... its a fair/unfair rule.

if you have a coach that has coached your kids for 5yrs with 2 of the of his kids playing in the same program. now, 1 kids wants to play in a different program. should that coach be forced to give up his team or should he make that kid play in the program that they don't want to play in?
1 kid plays in 5th grade which is the team he coaches and the other is in 2nd grade.

the rule, to my understanding, is that you can't coach a team in 1 program and have your other kid in another program. the rule was made up 5 or 6 yrs ago to keep kids and parents from jumping from program to program. but, this isn't program jumping to me. to season hasn't started and kids have just signed up this week for b-ball.

Just from reading your post and not knowing what league this is pertaining to, it seems to me that if a kid is put on a team they do not want to play on, they usually will not perform to the best of their ability.

As for the coaching aspect, there is a big difference between 2nd and 5th grades, so I don't see why a coach should have to give up their older team because the younger child wants to go to a different team. In fact, in my opinion and experiences, any parent who coaches their own child should allow their child to play for another coach at times in order to get another coach's aspect of the game and for a 2nd grader, it is not going hurt them to play for one season under another coach other than their parent, again, in my opinion.

that is what all of us parents are wondering. what is big deal. yes, he coaches for 1 b-ball program and his youngest want to play for the rival program. both programs are in the same town. here is a little bit more of the story. the coaches daughter doesn't want/like the 2 coaches that she will be playing for. so, she is wanting to play for the other program and with most of her school friends. the 2 coaches/guys that run this program have been told that if this girls dad is not allowed to coach his team then 5 or 6 of the 8 kids parents will pull there kids from this program. b/c for 5 yrs now they have had the same coach. they know and trust him. the 2 that run the programs response to us parents was that the coach is being selfish to his team by allowing his daughter to play for the rival program. there is a lot of bad blood between the 2 programs. this coach knows his b-ball. he as been playing and teaching b-ball and football most of his life to kids from grades k to 12. he helps out with the varsity football teams as an assist as well as middle school b-ball. and that is the problem. b/c he is an assist and friends with the guys that run the rival program, the 2 that run the program that his 5th grade team is on think he just wanting to rub elbows with his friends. it is complete bs!!

hey, I think someone tried to tell you a few years ago that one of the programs had some serious issues. As far as I know only one program in Logan has the rule about being involved in both programs. I think the newest program just wants kids to have the chance to play ball, they don't care which program its for. Or which program the dad coaches for.

lyba should go to stern and demand more gyms. the bobcats don't need all of those gyms. at the coaches meet we scheduled 3 nights worth of practices for the whole year.

1987,
Any kid with the desire to play basketball is welcomed into the LYBA progra, despite who his or her parents are. We don't even make kids turn their t-shirts that have the name of the other program inside out. Right in the middle of a bobcat practice, a current 7th grader had a lyba shirt on, and was told to turn her shirt inside out. how embarrasing for that child. She wasn't even on Mike and Dan's team.
