yes it is still there, I played some there a couple years ago
I don't know why everyone feels bad for Green. They had a couple of tall girls too. They didn't lack size, they lacked ability. It doesn't matter how big the girls are. If you don't have the skills to play, your size isn't going to help you.
If size matters, even a little, why didn't Green score more than 2? It amazes me that when a team is good, some people always look for a different reason. Why can't those people give credit where it is due?? Yes, Portsmouth has height. Yes, Portsmouth has depth. And, yes Portsmouth is a very good team!
also, I am sure if you ask the other 5th-6th grade coaches they would all agree that they would love to have a couple girls taller than other teams.
Shoot, I know I would like to have another tall kid for my boys team...but with the big kids I do have there are things I can do with them that I couldn't do with other kids their size or taller.
Size makes all the difference in this level of play. When you can stand there and shoot ten times in a row, if you miss that many, and get your own rebound everytime when the other teams girls are so little they dont come close to touching the ball you will win alot more then you will lose. Its happen to us many times the last few years but we will show up and play our best. Then shake there hands, and go practice to get better.
That's an excellent point....why is a girl able to get her own rebound over and over again???? It has absolutely nothing to do with size...it simply means the other team is not boxing out. I'm 5'6" and I guarantee I could keep a 6 foot girl from getting the ball by simply playing smart. I do believe that boxing out is one of the first fundamentals of basketball that a good coach teaches. Maybe some of the teams in this league need to go back to the basics.
Our coach has always stressed to our girls that no matter how big the other team is, if you do what you're supposed to do, you can beat them. It sounds like some of the teams here need to have a more positive outlook on the competition and stop being discouraged because of 1 extremely tall 11 yr old girl. There are 4 other girls out there with her. She doesn't win games on her own. Neither does the extra inches she has on you.
The more and more I think about it, the comment about driving herself to the game was a lame, childish dig at her and if you'd like to make fun of her, please keep it off the internet.
Does anyone know anything about the Shawnee Hills team in the boys 5th-6th grade division? Are they a church team or something from Burg....a team that is just mixed with kids from different schools?
