Visiting Gallipolis split a pair of junior high basketball games with host Chesapeake in the Chesapeake Middle School gym Wednesday evening.
In the first outing, the GAJH 7th graders bounced Chesapeake, 48-34. In the nightcap, Chesapeake pulled away in the final three minutes to down Gallipolis, 28-19.
The Blue Devil 7th graders improved to 2-0 on the year. It was Chesapeake’s first game. The Blue Devil 8th graders dropped to 1-1 on the year. Chesapeake won its season opener.
The Gallipolis teams will journey to South Point Monday for a twinbill and then motor to Jackson Thursday for another doubleheader. Games will begin at 5:30 each evening.
In Wednesday’s first game, Gallipolis led 6-4, 20-12 and 35-22 at the quartermarks.
Brian Williams tallied 15 points for the Gallians. Logan Allison and Terhan Barnitz scored 10 apiece, Seth Atkins nine and Reid Eastman eight.
For Chesapeake, Caleb Heffner tallied 15 points and Chad Meadows nine.
In the nightcap, Chesapeake led 10-4, 14-9 and 19-11 at the quartermarks.
Gallipolis was unable to hit its free throws during the contest, sinking only six of 18 attempts at the line. The Little Blue Devils were still in the game with a little over three minutes to play, but a defensive lapse in which the host team scored on two fast breaks and sank a free preserved the Little Panthers lead and victory.
For Gallipolis Jim Clagg tallied eight points. Justin Bailey tossed in four. For Chesapeake, N. Jones and J. Thompson had nine points apiece.

Re: Chesapeake, Gallipolis split pair
Coach Gary Harrison made his debut tonight as the new 7th grade coach. Because of paper work, tonight was the first time he had worked with the team. Coach Harrison did an awesome job getting all of the players (15 players) some playing time. I was impressed with how he rotated the players so effectively. Keep up the great job!! Coach Harrison is replacing long time Coach Tom Hopkins. Hopkins had to resign due to conflict with his work schedule. Hoppy, thanks for all your years of dedication and hard work. JV Asst. Coach Jason Thomas has been filing in (which was greatly appreciated) until the board approved Coach Harrison.

Gallia 7th will be competitive this winter despite the fact they have lost one of their best players--Tyler Warnimont --due to a non-related basketball incident. He broke his arm while jumping on a trampoline Tuesday.
