Re: Burg 8th Grade Beat?!?!
Would have liked to have seen Coach Holden stay with this class. I guarantee you that if the things are going on that have been posted on here he would have put a stop to it.
I still don't understand the two coach situation. Why isn't there just one coach for both the 7th and 8th grade teams? The kids get adjusted to one coach as a 7th grader and then have to readjust to a new coach. I thought in the past they always just had one coach?
You can also bet you behind that if those boys are still acting like that next year when they get to the HS level, they will be in for a rude awakening. That is one thing Coach Barrick won't tolerate is showboating. You play as a team, you win as a team and you lose as a team.

Burg almost always had a separate coach for each age from pee wee on up, but you can bet your bottom dollar they run "The Program" as much as can be done. Burg also got a kid from Clay, it seems like the rich get richer. . .

Re: Burg 8th Grade Beat?!?!
I have been watching the comments on this website for the last few days and I hive decided to give my two cents.
Yes,the wheelersburg 8th grade team is good. Yes,they have been playing like they're unbeatable and it has shown.
I think that everybody needs to understand, a team does not revolve around 1 or just 5 players, but 14. Yes, Massie is a very great player and I like to watch him play, just not against my boy (haha), BUT HE DOES NOT WIN GAMES!!!!!the Wheelersburg 8th grade TEAM does......his shot is amazing but forcing shots does not help the team. If he would just slow down and let the plays form, i think you would see a different team.
As far as not playing a lot of the boys, I don't know about for I have only seen 1 game. And at that game, only 9 out of 14 played and i think that's sad.
Wheelersburg has shown that they are the best team so far. But when West gets Frye back, I think their record might change for the worse.
GO SIDERS!!!!

Re: Burg 8th Grade Beat?!?!
Barrick will put his best starting 5 on the court no matter if your a freshman or senior, name,or whatever he dont care. He puts the best athletes that can play the game of basketball on both ends of the court and thats why Burg has a competitive team every year, so it will be interesting to see what happens with these boys at the next level!!
I have my opinion but I will keep it to myself..
I do think there will be a few of these boys start contributing to the Varsisty level as Sophmores ..

Re: Burg 8th Grade Beat?!?!
Fourteen boys is hard to handle in junior high. There is simply not enough playing time to make all the mommies and daddies happy. As long as the boys/parents are understanding of the situation and the possibility to improve through the practices and occassional game time for the last 5-6 players then that would work. In today's society though that is far and few between.

jason bourne wrote:so chloe, i take it your kid didnt make the basketball team, so you have it in for the kids that came here from minford, because it cut your kid out of a position ,possibly, i could be wrong but thats the way it sounds. That none of the kids on the team made it because they were good enough, because they have mommys and grandmas working at the school, so you say.
I really dont thinks it works that way, and i know coach Barrick could give a hoot who you are or what your name is.He does things his way,as well he should , its his program. He has cut plenty of good kids in the past and im sure he will in the future, no matter what your name is, or your affliation with anything. He has cut board members kids in the past , just to show you it doesnt matter. Also as for the not speaking to other kids at different places , i find that hard to believe also, but kids will be kids.
Keep working hard pirates, and good luck the rest of the season, dont worry about the nah-sayers, we believe in you .
Go Burg
Yes, You are wrong Jason. Like I have said before. I find it hard for a 63 year old to have a kid in junior high. I go watch the games with friends that have grandchildren on the team. Just had a question and there is no better place to find out but on southeasternohiopreps.

He will also not hesitate to sit your butt down if you are showboating or get a T or he feels you aren't playing the way he wants you to play. I've seen him sit Stegman down for an entire half after getting a T. That's because he cares about the boys more than the points on the board or the win. Yes he cares about those things too but guiding those boys into men is more important and it should be. That's one of the issues at the JH level. The ones showboating and acting like they are the best things out there are still starting and playing. No one is brave enough to sit them down and teach them a lesson. Again, that's part of the problem.
Re: Burg 8th Grade Beat?!?!
I'm sorry SportsFiend, but winning is what coach Barrick is all about. Yes he wants them to "behave", but it is the same at all levels. Win, Win, Win!

Re: Burg 8th Grade Beat?!?!
After watching burgs 8th grade team for the last 2 yrs. and the rest of the soc 2 I fall in line with the evaluation of falconator the rest of the league has caught up for the most part, last yr we couldnt play with them and this yr gave them all they could handle, they just havent physicly progressed as much as the rest of the league did. But they are still a very very good team just not as dominating.
And after watching Minford progress this yr. I dont think they are missing the boys they lost that much, they look pretty solid now.
Burg at West should be a very good game and the overall strength of the league is very very solid and has made for a pretty exciting yr. if Burg were to go undefeated this yr in league play would make for a very good year for them.IMO.

Re: Burg 8th Grade Beat?!?!
However, one thing that the other SOC II schools don't have once these boys reach high school is a coach named Tom Barrick.
That will increase the gap that has been made up evidently from 7th to 8th grade. I think there are some very good, moral, coaches in the SOC II but nobody can match Tom Barrick.

Barrick is the top coach in the SOC, I agree. I think 2-4 of Burg's 8th graders will be contibutor's in high school. I think one of them in their sophomore year and the other 1-3 in their junior year.

Re: Burg 8th Grade Beat?!?!
Burg won both. 7th grade won by 10 I think. 8th grade was up by as much as 20 or so at some points....won by 10-ish I think. Slight change in the starting lineup with Cowgill coming in and doing a great job imo. West boys came to play though and I give them all credit where due.
Didn't think it was necessary to yell "you suck" as the Burg boys were shooting their foul shots, but that's just me.

Re: Burg 8th Grade Beat?!?!
I believe the Burg 7th grade ended up winning by around 6 points. Good game West had 8 or 9 point lead at one time got into foul trouble without having a deep bench. Score was tied at half and stayed close the whole game West had to foul the last 2 minutes, Burg executed on foul shots and got the W.
Burg won the 8th grade pretty handily, West was without 2 starters due injury. I know that one of the starters has been release and will be ready for tournament play.

It's Jr. High you can't really take a whole lot from that. You never know how these kids will be in a couple of years at the Varsity level. These kids could end up not doing very well at all or these kids could end up beating everyone in the SOC without any problems. Here's an example. When Wheelersburg went to the regional Finals in football a few years back. Those seniors didn't have a winning record in Jr High, Freshman, or Jr. Varsity. They got up to Varsity and won a couple of SOC titles and came close to making it to the State Tourny.
