WV Thunder 10u Capture Ohio AAU State Championship

The WV Thunder 10u Girls' AAU Basketball team won the Ohio AAU State Championship over this past weekend in West Chester at Lakota West High School. The 10u Thunder is playing out of Ohio this year because the majority of the girls on their roster are from Ohio. There are 4 from Ohio, 2 from KY, and only 1 from WV. By AAU rules, teams can have 3 girls from out of district areas, but in adjoining districts, and this is what many AAU teams do including this year's 10u and 11u Thunder.

The Thunder had to do it the hard way as they lost in the winners' bracket final in the double-elimination tournament Saturday evening to the Dayton Lady Hoopstars (Black) team in double-overtime. This was after winning their first game over the Dayton Lady Hoopstars (White) team earlier that day.

On Sunday, the WV Thunder team defeated the Ohio Hardwood Heat by 14 points after leading only by 2 points at half. Then, they would have to come back and beat the Dayton Black twice to win it. In the first game against Dayton on Sunday the Thunder fell behind 10 - 0 after the first quarter, but rallied to tie it at 18 - 18 at the half. The 10u Thunder then took an 8 point lead in the 4th quarter and held on to a 3 point win to set up the State Championship game.

In the finals, the Thunder again got down early at 14 - 7 after the first quarter and trailed by 6 at the half. They were down by 8 points going into the 4th quarter but dug down and took the lead with about 1:30 left in the game and won by 3 points. What's very impressive about this is that this team has only 7 girls on the roster. They are still looking for one more girl before they go to Disney World in Orlando, FL for the 10u National AAU Tournament in July.

Logan Fraley (5th grade) Boyd County, KY, and Kelsey Stumbo (5th grade) East Carter, KY

congrats to the girls !! I know Mr. Doddridge and know how committed he is to coaching whether or not he is head coach or assisting. Also his/our old neighborhood is in dire need of nightly whiffle ball games.
