Russell 14- Coal Grove-0

Russell played well today and stood nose to nose with the Hornets. Hard hitting teams and very good plays on both sides of the ball. Coal Grove is physical and will always be. Russell did well on defense and held Coal grove to 21 yards of offense. Russell put up 200 total yards, 175 rushing and 25 passing. I know I have heard all year that teams improve on here,, and I agree. The Grove has improved very well this season since we last played them..... And so have we. I think the best thing about our season is playing the best we can find even if takes driving 2-3 hours to get the game. Our kids have continued to improve and develop over the season and it has shown.

I know there were thoughts about us NOT wanting to play Coal Grove, not re-scheduling another game while picking up other teams in the area... It is not to avoid playing a team but to play all the best teams... I know that basketball starts Thursday so the River Bowl would have been out for us... We played a very good Fairland team and defeated them 28-6 in the 3rd quarter. The game was called in the third quarter. Fairland was the best at the time in the TSYFL, I still think they are in the running for the Super Bowl in West Virginia.
I congratulate the Grove on beating Rock Hill yesterday in OT and that was a great game..... I wish we were back from driving down to Estill County yesterday morning to watch it... Conrats to Coal grove on winning the OVC Super Bowl.....

I love football, and I love the kids I work for. My kids dont talk smack, and just come out and play football. Thats what I love about this team, they just do their job and continue to do it very well.

I wish you guys the best on that side of the river and hope that you have a great winter. I am sure that there will be other games to play in the future..
Thanks

I dont think they were flat, they came out pumped up and ready to go. Russell was willing to stand nose to nose with them. CG stopped us for loss 4 times behind the line of scrimmage. We stopped them 6 times for loss. CG ran 21 offensive plays, Russell ran 49 offensive plays. CG only had 2 first downs inthe game. Russell had 10 first downs. We held the ball and had to overcome a good defensive presence by CG and make adjustments. CG and everybody else knows that when we run the unbalanced line we run to that side. We have ran it all year, the difference with this game is that we knew after the first play that we would have to go to the scheme. So we continued to run the power side unbalanced but if we ran the unbalanced left our backs would line up the opposite and go the oppiste way. After CG would see the line shift and over shift, it left the opposite outside open for 5-7 yards a carry. As we watched the game progress we noticed that Paulus was getting closer to the line in his corner position, so we had the pass in the flat that would work. It is hard to stop the pass when you think run all the time. Like I said before, it is hard to concentrate on shutting down Messer or Korzep, when there are other ways to win.. Dixon, the end, had a great game and 2 great catches, one for a first down on 4th and 9, and then the TD catch to give us that last score. Messer still had 90 yards on 15 carries, Korzep had 80 yards on 18 carries, Dixon had 2 catches for 26 yards.

I think the most deciding factor of the game was the play of our defense yesterday. Our 5th grader, Sammy Smith #68 had his best game of the season yesterday, 6 tackles, 4 behind the line of scrimmage. Sammy will be a 6th grader next year and will be back to play on the 6th grade team again. Next year, he will be a force to be reckoned with....... Anyway, we had a plan for this game and it worked. I just think we outlasted them, thats all.... CG is tough and their kids play harder than anyone we have played all year, we knew that coming into the game and knew we had our hands full with a great team.... I commend the play of the kids from CG and I see great things from these kids as they grow and go thru the system.. Very talented bunch of young men. I am lucky to say that we won, it could have went either way, thats why we play the game.

What a class act!I heard the talk leading up to this, and know that the grove walked away with "bleeding eyes" from the first go around, and I know that they wanted this game so,so,so,badly.

Russell must be a tremendously talented group of young men to only allow 21 total yards to such a strong team.It is tough on the young men to play 2 games in 2 days, but both teams did exactly that.I can tell you that is the reason that some teams are not in the bowl.

I'll tell you this. We faced both teams and have faced some good teams in our league but the Russell team is hands down the best team I have faced in a long time. They are well coached and fundamentally as sound as anyone I've ever seen. I would have loved to have seen that game. Anyway congrats to CG on their superbowl and congrats to Russell on what I think was an undefeated season

Congrats to Russell on a great win yesterday!

We have played them twice this year and tonight in the semi's will be our 3rd time. They are one of the best coached and disciplined teams you will see and they come out and take the game to you. Just tons of talent on the team. They play like they ARE going to win and that gets you on your heels from the outset. If you aren't ready for that, they will eat you alive. Semi final game starts at 6pm at Raceland JFL field for a chance to see some good football. A group of really nice people and great kids, wish you all the best tonight for a fun and safe game.

Anyone care to chime in about the game finishing with 3-4 mins left on the clock?

The last touchdown that Russell had was no catch. The ball hit ground I have watched it on film dozens of times. Never the less Russell has a great football team, had not been for some confussion on our sidelines the game may have been a little different.

I heard that a few coaches from the grove got kicked out of the game and that lead up to them walking off the field with time remaining.... :?:

CG 4th grade was suppose to play at 7:30pm on Sunday night and did not show up either. I dont know if the coaches who were ejected were helping that team too but I did hear the VP of the Raceland league say that the coaches who were ejected could not come back and I dont know if that is why the 4th grade team did not come back.

I just know that the schedule had CG 4th grade on it. I dont know who approved it or who signed up to put the team in the bracket,,, We did not know that CG was not going to be there. There may have been some confusion on Raceland's part or someone else... Our 4th grade was schduled to play at 7:30 pm that night against a team,, suppose to CG????? We dont know,, just knew that no ones was there... I hope things go well for you guys over there and basketball season will be here in 3 days!!! At least it is for us...

Coach Waulk did know that u all could go but instead choose to go 2 Ateams game and take one of the fourth grade player to play with us. We as parents from Ateam did not know anything about him bringing a fourth grader and was not happy about it either. And also the way he acted I heard he is no long allowed to play at any Raceland tourneys. Because of a Bteam coach Ateam boys was pulled off the field with 4 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
So that being said if Bteam was wanting to play u all can thank ur head coach for not being able 2.
