Gallia Academy Junior High cagers top PPHS, 26-16, 30-27

Visiting Gallipolis defeated Pt. Pleasant’s 7th and 8th grade cagers 26-16 and 30-27 in a double header in the Pt. Pleasant Junior High gym Monday evening.

The Gallipolis 7th graders improved to 7-0 on the year in the opening contest. Pt. Pleasant dropped its first game and is 3-1 on the year.

Gallipolis led 12-2 after one period and 16-4 during intermission. After three periods, the Little Blue devils were on top, 23-9.

Terance Barnitz led Gallipolis with nine points. Wade Jarrell chipped in with eight markers. Z. Canterbury led Pt. Pleasant with nine points.

In the nightcap, Gallipolis led 10-8 after one period. PPHS outscored the Gallians 7-3 in the stanza to take a 15-13 lead at halftime.

The third period was a nip and tuck battle with Gallipolis outscoring the West Virginians, 12-9 to take a 25-24 lead going into the final quarter.

Pt. Pleasant grabbed a 27-26 lead late in the game before the Ohioans won out 30-27. Jim Clagg's clutch free throw with 20.2 seconds left sealed the victory for GAHS. Key rebounding by Austin Lewis in the second half proved to be the big difference in the game’s final outcome.

For the winners, Nick Clagg led the way with seven points. Cody Call and Jim Clagg each had six, T. J. McCalla five, and Lewis four. L. McCarty led Pt. Pleasnt with seven points. A. Williamson added six.

Gallipolis’ 7th and 8th graders will host Meigs Wednesday on the Washington School hardwood. The first game will begin at 5:30 p.m.
