The 8th grade Lady Trojans (1-0) won at West Union last night by a score of 52-11. Too many turnovers early, due to Portsmouth's press, ended up putting the Lady Dragons in the hole. Portsmouth shot the ball very well all evening. Portsmouth had 3 girls in double figures with Jenkins leading the way with 15, Williams and Benner each had 13, Oiler added 5, Ferrara chipped in 4 points, and Jackson finished the scoring with 2. The Lady Trojans are back in action tonight traveling to Minford. 7th grade gets things started at 5:30.

Portsmouth 8th grade improved to 2-0 on the season with a 43-16 victory on the road at Minford. The Lady Trojans once again had 3 players in double figures with Williams leading the way with 18 points, Jenkins added 12, Benner 11, and Jackson finished the scoring with 2 points. On the road again tomorrow at Chillicothe, who gave the Lady Trojans 2 of their 4 losses last season. Should be a great ballgame. Good Luck ladies. The 7th grade starts the evening at 6:00.

The Lady Trojans suffered their 1st loss of the year at Chillicothe 26-35 to bring their record to 2-1 on the season. The Portsmouth girls were down by only 2 halftime but let the Lady Cavaliers stretch it to 10 in the 3rd. The team gave a valiant effort even without one of their starters who was not at the game due to a family emergency. Williams led the scoring with 13 points, Oiler added 6 pts., Jenkins chipped in 5, and Ferrara finished the scoring with 2 points. The Lady Trojans look to bounce back on Tues. 12/14 at home against West Portsmouth.

The Portsmouth Lady Trojans (3-1) bounced back from their 1st loss with a 40-30 victory over West Portsmouth. Typical of a Portsmouth/West game both teams fought to the very end and left everything on the floor. Williams paced the Trojans with a team high 18 pts, while Jenkins chipped in 10, Oiler added 6, Jackson 3, Benner 2, and Ferrara finished the scoring with 1. The team will be back in action tonight 12/15 for the last time before Christmas break with a visit to Ironton. Should be a very good game against two evenly matched teams.

The Portsmouth 8th grade girls returned from Christmas break to defeat Jackson at home by a score of 33-29. That win brings the girls record to 4-2. The team played a pretty good 1st half to build a 8 point lead at the intermission. The 2nd half turned a little sloppy and the Lady Trojans had to hold on to win by 4. Williams led the team in scoring with 15 points, Jenkins added 9, Benner chipped in 4, Jackson 3, and Oiler finished the scoring with 2. The team heads back to the road to take on Eastern Pike on Weds. 1/5. Good luck ladies.

The 8th grade Lady Trojans improved to 5-2 with a road victory at Eastern by a score of 48-17. After starting the game cold in the 1st quarter, the team caught fire for the remainder of the game. The Trojan press forced the Eagles into numerous turnovers, which led to easy transition points. Total team effort with many great passes that led to a balanced scoring night. Williams led the way with 18 pts., Oiler had her best game of the year with 11 pts, Jenkins and Benner both had 8, and Jackson finished the scoring with 3. The Lady Trojans will have a week off to prepare for the Wheelersburg Pirates coming to town on 1/12.

The 8th grade Lady Trojans improved their record to (6-2) after beating the Lady Pirates of Wheelersburg by a score of 35-25 for their 3rd straight win. It definitely did not look good early as Portsmouth was down by 9 at halftime. This one was a tale of two halves. The Lady Trojans looked like a totally different team in the second half as the team outscored their opponent by 19 in the second half. Improved rebounding, better shot selection, and the full court press was the difference in this one. The team was led in scoring by Williams with 17 points, Jenkins added 9, Oiler chipped in with 4, Jackson posted 3 pts, and Benner finished the scoring with 2. The Lady Trojans will be back in action when they travel to Northwest on Weds. 1/19.

The Portsmouth girls ran their win streak to 4 games by winning on the road at Northwest by a score of 51-41. That win moves the ladies' record to (7-2) on the season. After being down 5-0, the Lady Trojans slowly started chipping away at the margin to end up leading 25-23 at halftime. For two games in a row, the team used their full court press and great passing to open teammates to outscore the Lady Mohawks by 8 points in the second half. Both teams played well. Very entertaining game to watch. Williams had the hot hand with a team high 26 points, Jenkins contributed 14, Benner added 8, and Oiler finished the scoring with 3. The 1/22 game with Manchester has been cancelled, so the Lady Trojans will put their win streak on the line on Mon. 1/24 on the road at Jackson.

All4unc,

Would you happen to know if Portsmouth would need any games for this season? I looked at your schedule and saw 15 games with one cancellation. Ironton St. Joseph had a team cancel on us and we are looking for a competitive game. We only have one team and play 8th grade. Let me know if you have any information.

The Lady Trojans (8-2) extended their winning streak to 5 games by defeating Jackson on the road by a score of 52-32. The team shot the ball well all night. After leading by 7 at halftime, the team stretched the lead by playing good defense in the second half. Williams paced the team with 22 points, Benner added a solid 18, Jenkins chipped in 8, and Oiler and Ferrara finished the scoring with 2 apiece. The team will try to avenge an earlier loss on Wednesday 1/26 when they play host to Chillicothe. Should be a good one. Good luck ladies.

The Portsmouth 8th grade girls had their 5 game winning streak snapped against Chillicothe after losing a heartbreaker 39-36 at home. That loss brings the girls' record to (8-3). The team came out on fire from the field in the first half building a nine point lead. The Lady Trojans went into halftime up by six after leading the entire first half. The 3rd quarter proved to be the turning point as the team lost the lead due to poor rebounding and transition defense. The team had a chance to tie on a last second three pointer but it did not go in. You can not fault the teams' effort they just ran out off gas at the end. Very good junior high girls basketball game. Williams continued her torrid pace by leading the team with 19 points, Benner added 6, Jenkins, Oiler, and Jackson all had 3 apiece, and Ferrara finished the scoring with 2 points. The Lady Trojans hope to get back on the winning track and avenge an earlier loss on Weds. 2/2 when they play host to Ironton.

All the girls played their hearts out, and it was a very good game for both teams. I must say though that the officiating was very one sided. They also made an over and back call that lead to the last second 3 pt attempt, where the chilli girl was straddling the line. She never fully crossed over it. It was unfortunate that the refs actually cost Portsmouth the game, because going into the last minute it was 9 fouls to 2. We stalled and portsmouth was unable to foul enough to send us to the line. We will hopefully meet again in the wellston tournament. Good luck to both teams.
