Annual Buckeye Bash boasts prizes, cash

NELSONVILLE — More than $200,000 in cash and prizes will be given away on Saturday at the third installment of the Nelsonville-York Buckeye Bash. Despite a struggling economy and lower number of ticket sales, organizers are looking to make this year’s bash a smashing success.

The Buckeye Bash began as a fundraiser to help pay off improvements made to Boston Field — the school’s home to track and field and football. It has since grown into a frenzied event, where every ticket-holder becomes a winner — at least in the form of free food, entertainment and door prizes.

Tickets are priced at $50, with a chance at a multitude of prizes. This year’s prize list is bigger than ever and includes almost $20,000 in cash giveaways. The grand prize is a 4-wheel-drive 2009 Chevrolet Silverado. Some of the more extravagant prizes include a five-day cruise for two to the Bahamas, a Bass Tracker boat, one year’s worth of gasoline, a 60-inch DLP television, a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle, a laptop computer, a Kubota 4-wheel-drive tractor and several all-terrain and utility vehicles.

“It’s a great way to contribute to the improvement of Nelsonville-York’s facilities and I believe it’s a great opportunity to win a fabulous gift,” said John Hurd, one of the organizers of the event. “Where else for $50 can you get an opportunity to eat for free and have a chance for up to $200,000 worth of prizes?”

Perhaps no one knows the feeling of winning big more than Kelly George — last year’s grand-prize winner of a new Ford truck. George bought two tickets last year, one for her and one for her parents. She and her husband were sick and unable to attend the event, but her brothers and sisters were there and screamed for joy after George’s name was called as the grand-prize winner.

“It was pretty incredible,” George said. “Especially because I’m one of those people that never wins anything.”

George can no longer say that about herself though, and she’s hoping her ticket will be lucky again this year.

The Buckeye Bash will open its doors at noon with prize giveaways starting at 2 p.m. and lasting until 5 p.m. In addition, one of the biggest Bingo events is scheduled to take place afterward in the school’s cafeteria. Before the prize giveaways and during, several other raffles and games will take place allowing patrons more chances of hitting it big while providing an opportunity to help the school’s athletics. Steve Cox, a familiar voice on the microphone at football games and a well-known supporter of Nelsonville-York athletics as well as an organizer for Buckeye Bash, will help emcee the event and also operate trivia games with cash prizes.

Mike Bishop, another key organizer for the Bash, said the school owes another payment of $101,000 for the track, even after an expected $125,000 gift from Rocky Boots. Last year, the event cleared around $90,000 toward the payment of the field. After that success, the organizers decided to up the prizes in anticipation of being able to fully pay off the field. That’s when the economy took a turn for the worse. Last year, around 4,000 tickets were sold, but this year Bishop expects the number to be closer to 3,000 and feels a $30,000 profit is more likely than last year’s total.

Still, Bishop is hopeful for a great event.

“You can’t describe it. You really have to see it in real life,” Bishop said. “We stepped up the prize list, but got smacked in the face by the economy. We’ll work through it. We guarantee to give away all the prizes. Our sales may not be as good as it was last year, but odds to win are good, and if you don’t win a prize, I guarantee you’ll at least get your $50 in entertainment, food and door prizes.”

Tickets can still be purchased from C & J Tax Service, The Pit Stop, any student-athlete, any of the Nelsonville-York’s schools and on http://www.nybuckeyebash.com.

Will the track be fully paid off before the baseball and softball field rennovations, or will those rennovations take place now and then the debt just paid off as we go along each year with the Buckeye Bash?
