Why Men are never depressed
WHY MEN ARE NEVER DEPRESSED:
Men Are Just Happier People--
What do you expect from such simple creatures? Your last name stays put. The garage is all yours. Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack. You can be President. You can never be pregnant. You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. You can wear NO shirt to a water park. Car mechanics tell you the truth.. The world is your urinal. You never have to drive to another gas station restroom because this one is just too icky. You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Wrinkles add character. Wedding dress $5000. Tux rental-$ 100. People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them. The occasional well-rendered belch is practically expected. New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks. A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is $8.95 for a three-pack. Three pairs of shoes are more than enough. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes. Everything on your face stays its original color. The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades. You only have to shave your face and neck. You can play with toys all your life. Your belly usually hides your big hips. One wallet and one pair of shoes -- one color for all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look. You can "do" your nails with a pocket knife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a mustache. You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24 in 25 minutes.
No wonder men are happier...

Oh, I think men actually do get depressed - they just call it different names because "depressed" sounds "emotional" and "weak" and heaven forbid they should express or display those characteristics.
They call it "outrage" or "anger" at something - they call it "frustration with the actions of others", not something internal to themselves.
I understand the humorous nature and intent, but in many ways the cultural imperatives on men always to be "strong", never to acknowledge fear or inadequacy, never to cry, never to be "emotional", make admitting to being "depressed" and finding ways to cope or seeking treatment impossible for men.
Men tend to respond to their feelings of depression by lashing out with aggression at the nearest handy target or self-medicating with alchohol [and blaming anything they say or do on being "drunk" - not "depressed"] because those are "manly" responses. They're allowed to be "mad", but never "sad".
Women have a good cry, or seek out a friend for comfort and advice, or go to a Dr. for help and treatment options.

I agree with caglewis. As a gynecologist who listens, I am privvy to the mechanisms that women use to cope with depression.
When I think of all the long, hard hours I put into my schooling, I sometimes start to get depressed but then I just look at it and smile, and when I start to feel sorry for myself, I just look at it again
and smile.

0-n-b365 - I know you started this thread for its humor, and I have kind of hijacked it. Sorry about that.
Here's another, historical, view on why men can't be depressed.
I found this interesting quote in Anna Quindlen's column in the "Newsweek" magazine which came today. The column is about the Presidential election in general.

I found this interesting quote in Anna Quindlen's column in the "Newsweek" magazine which came today. The column is about the Presidential election in general.
"In the Democratic contest, Americans crossed two monumental divides, those of race and gender prejudice. . . . . It is difficult to communicate to young people how revolutionary that is to those of us who spent our formative years assuming that white Christian men ran the world by birthright - but only if they had never been divorced, taken an antidepressant, or shed a tear in public."
