Favorite Dog Food
My wife and I are getting a new dog soon, and it's
been a little while since we had a new pup. We will be
bringing a Basset Hound into our family, he will be
less than 1 year old when we get him.
Hoping to get some helpful info about types of food
we should consider, also types of "treats", and any other
stuff that will help bring our new pup health and happiness.
Thanks

I've always liked Alpo with Beef Chunks. Add a little mayo and put it on a bun and that's a meal right there. Really makes my hair shiney.

Re: Favorite Dog Food
i breed boston terriers, and i have family that breeds differant breeds. we all give our pups purina puppy chow untill they reach a year old. it is great for their growing bones and muscles, and helps with brain development. after a dog reachs a year old if you decide to switch their dog food, do it gradualy by buying a bag of the puppy chow and a bag of whatever you decide to give them once they hit a year old. for 1 week mix the food 25% puppy chow, 75% whatever you decide to buy...the next week mix it 50-50...then next week mix it 75% adult dog food, 25% puppy chow. after that week you can start giving them 100% adult dog food. being a basset hound i would stay away from an adult dog food that has over 20% protein. in smaller dogs weighing less than 50lbs it is proven that higher amounts of protein in their diet can cause seizures. but while the dog is a young adult just over a year old you dont want to cut them too short on protein because they need it for energy wich they will have plenty of for the first couple years. basset hounds are known for getting a little on the chuncky side (but they sure are cute lol) so i would recomend an adult dog food after they reach a year old that is made of lamb and rice. most other dog foods have corn as a main ingridiant and have fattyer meats. it will cause them to get over weight and the corn will make it go right through them causing them to eat more, get fatter, and not retaining the nutrients in the food. lamb and rice on the other hand will stick with them and is much leaner resulting in a healthier dog......basset hounds sometimes have trouble with their eyes when they get older, so you may want to choose a food once the dog hits adult hood that has a suplement to help keep their eyes healthy.
i know i wrote a book, sorry

A buddy of mine was watching my dog lick his self and said, "Man, I wish I could do that.". I looked at him and said, "You know, if you pet him real nice he'd probably let you".

When I was in Iraq My buddies wife sent us a box every month. I think they were milk bone dog biscuts.

I feed mine Royal Canine. They have breed specific dog food too. I have a boxer and this really comes into it's own with him as they have the kibble designed in such a manner that it allows him, with their under bite to be able to grasp and chew the kibble. I used to hear him gagging a bit on other foods. I never hear him doing that with Royal Canine. A bag of it last for a long time. Jebby's coat is shinny like it's wet all the time and his stool is good and most importantly, he will actually eat the stuff. The biggest down fall though is it's not always the easiest brand to find.
Don't let anyone fool you though, a mut like Ozzie Ohio is going be fed nothing but Ole' Roy brand and table scraps!

There is a complete petmart right around the corner from my house, they carry a good variety of
Royal Canin pet food. We also have an indoor cat, that can satnd to lose some weight. They
have a formula for her too.
Thanks.
Also, thanks SWbaseballFan, great info there as well.
BTW: I've ate dog biscuts as well, they're bland and tough but grainy.

Re: Favorite Dog Food
I really like it. When my local store dropped it for a short period of time (never did figure out why) I drove all the way to Chillicothe to get it! (then again, they have a Donato's there as well
)

I have a Bassett Hound, and one thing you need to do is, watch the treats, because they put on weight real easy. You will love your little Bassett, they are laid back and playful. They can be alittle hard to train, as they have a mind of their own.

Re: Favorite Dog Food
For treats for my Border Collie, I get him the flavored rawhide pork twists. One every few day is not bad for them. I also started going to this pet shop that a friend recommended and get the flavored (dried) pig ears. I give one to my dog about every 5 days or so.
The rawhide and pig ears are much better for them than most snacks with all of the added garbage they put into that junk.

My two dogs eat IAMS, it's what my vet suggested. They like cheap dog biscuits and rawhide bones every once in a while.

MBH:
Are those the Dachshaunds(sp) you are talking about? My little girl, loves when those two come around the neighborhood. Lilly used to call them two little "hot dogs". LOL
