Nuclear Power Plant Coming To Ohio
PIKETON, Ohio — The stage is set for the formal announcement of a nuclear power plant to be built in southern Ohio on the site of a former uranium enrichment plant.
Although she couldn't talk about the specifics of the announcement, Duke Energy Spokesperson Johnna Reeder did tell ONN-TV that company executives met with Gov. Ted Strickland a few months ago to talk about nuclear power.
"Our president of Duke Energy met with Gov. Strickland and talked about overall fleet and meeting generation needs of future and yes we discussed nuclear," said Reeder.
Strickland, members of the state's congressional delegation and energy company officials plan to release details Thursday at the Department of Energy site near Piketon, about 80 miles east of Cincinnati.
Anytime the public hears nuclear, many people worry about safety. Officials with the Ohio Environmental Council say they have a right to be concerned, reported ONN's Lot Tan.
"We have a massive problem with nuclear waste in this country. There's no way to safely get rid of it just yet, the issue is not solved," said Nolan Moser of the Ohio Environmental Council.
But Reeder says Duke Energy has a long track record for safety.
"We have been operating nuclear facilities since 1973, well over three decades, and have had a huge success with both reliability and safety," said Reeder.
The 3,700-acre site is where the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant produced enriched uranium during the Cold War. It was closed in 2001, but cleanup is continuing.

Re: JOBS FOR OHIO FINALLY
When it comes to elected people and what they say, I've learned to not hold my breath. After all the Portsmouth by-pass has been how long in becoming a true working road? Oh, 25 years, so far? (dates back to the 60's or before) Maybe more. Oh well this isn't a political forum and I'll not go there, now. I just wish and pray that we as a nation would get a "Few Honest men" in office that care more for the average citizen than they do for their own pocket books. And back up what they boast of before they are elected and do what what is needed to see "it" through. And the American people would get wise and not vote for these losers. Drd

USEC announced Tuesday the company is now taking steps to demobilize its American Enrichment Project (ACP), after the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) asked the company to withdraw its application for a $2 billion loan guarantee to complete construction in Piketon.
“We are shocked and disappointed by DOE’s decision,†USEC Inc. CEO John K. Welch said Tuesday. “The American Centrifuge met the original intent of the loan guarantee program in that it would have used an innovative, but proven, technology, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and created thousands of immediate jobs across the United States.â€
Just how is this Ted Stricklands fault?
Re: JOBS FOR OHIO FINALLY
they said on the news last night that they had stopped things at the plant SO they could make sure all the finances were in order then ask the FEDS for some money to continue the project

He's the man on top. The fact that Ohio continues to lose more and more jobs is Mr Strickland's fault. He signed up for it, and now he has to swallow it. I'd like to remind folks that Ted Strickland isn't a rookie here. He has been playing politics in our State for nearly two decades now. It's time for him to stand up and take some responsibility.
Re: JOBS FOR OHIO FINALLY
also, could the fact that Mr Strickland played politics and backed Mrs. Clinton for the Whitehouse have anything to do, with Obama failing to back Ohio on this?
