FOUND - small Beagle dog

My grandson was jogging in north/west Ironton Friday night and a little Beagle dog began following him and ended up following him all the way to our house. The dog is an un-neutered male, all or mostly Beagle, approx 24" long, not counting his tail, and 12" tall, not counting his head.
I don't know about age - I'd say older than "puppy" but probably not full grown yet either.
He has a tan head and face, a black back fading to tan down shoulders and hips, and a white belly and legs. His tail is black with a white tip. He is well fed, shiny coated, and smelled of shampoo as if recently given a bath. He had no collar or tags on him at all.
My grandson said he first noticed the dog somewhere between Means and Ellison Streets on N 3rd or N 4th. He then jogged back up N 2nd St toward town, and thought the dog had left him before he turned down Orchard St into Green Valley. However, when I went out on my back porch the next morning to check on my Boxer, there was this strange little Beagle lying up on the picnic table with our Boxer on the floor below him. I went to get my grandson, and he recognized the dog as the one that had been following him the evening before. Since it was Saturday, I can't contact the Tribune to put a notice in Lost and Found til Monday. We took the dog with us and drove around the area where my grandson first noticed him and asked everyone we saw out walking or mowing if they recognized the dog or had heard anyone say they had a dog missing. No luck. I then bought him a little collar and we rigged a second tie-out line to keep him safely confined to my porch and back yard out of harm's way til I have time to post notices and try to locate his owners. He gives every indication of being a "pampered pooch". He tries to get in the house everytime we open the door to the porch, and when I checked on them this morning, the BEAGLE was sleeping in the doghouse, and the Boxer [whose house it is] was sleeping on a throw rug on the floor. Our Boxer is a neutered male about 5 yrs old, and 3X or 4X the size of the Beagle, yet these two dogs are pleasantly cohabiting my porch with very little barking/yapping and no snarling/growling/snapping at all between them - instant friends.
I'm not real crazy about having one dog, let alone 2 - I certainly hope I'm able to locate his owners. How do you get a dog checked to see if it has one of those locater chips? Call a vet??

I placed an ad about this little dog in the "Lost and Found" section of the Classifieds in the Ironton Tribune which will run for the third and final time in tonight's [Thurs] paper. I had him "wanded" to see if he had a locater chip embedded - negative. I took pictures of him and made a flier with the picture on it describing where we found him which my grandson has posted on poles, etc all around this end of Ironton. I have had only one phone call in response, and their missing dog was older and bigger than the one I am keeping.
It has been 6 days now since this dog showed up at my house, and there has been almost no response to the various announcements I have placed regarding him. He is so clean and well-behaved that I find it hard not to believe that he has had a home and loving care, but no one is claiming him.
My much larger Boxer and this little Beagle are so compatible together - but I don't want and can't afford to keep 2 dogs. [I have to keep them both tied because the Boxer can go over my fence and the Beagle can go under it.] I have begun looking for a place that will take the Beagle and offer him for adoption but I can't find anyplace that will. I can turn him over to the Law Co Dog Warden, but they will kill him if he's not "claimed" in 3 days. [I've had him for 6 and repeatedly advertised his location in multiple ways with no response.] I wish I could find him a home.
This is a sweet little dog who has probably been, and still has the potential of making a good pet.
But I'm sure glad PATTYCAKES is pleased to think that killing him is a funny joke and my best option.

hope you find the owner, my sons dog run away when he was 7 or 8 years old, and I know my son would have given anything if someone like you took the time to find the owner to try to return the dog safely,,,as wil the owner of the dog you have.

Cag, don't be so hard on those of us with a little humor for every situation. I feel for patty cakes as I too caught He!! for recommending a Chinese restaurant for YTB's kitten. Sometimes we are too quick with the smart A$$ed remarks, but we are not totally bad. And some of the Vietnamese people would probably like to have the dog after a little fattening up. There are other Nationalities around. I have friends who would think you terrible for eating beef. Lighten up. Please.

Now that said, about two years ago, there was a cute and friendly chocolate Lab pup that showed up at my house. After about three days of feeding it, and realizing that the law of humanity is "YOU FEED IT, IT OWNS YOU", I posted on a web site that rescues Labs. I posted the message on Wednesday night late, and by the time I returned from my regular Thursday luncheon about 3:00 P.M., I had three messages on my answering machine. Thursday evening and Friday morning, I talked to three different people, from three different states. This also included about 8 e-mail messages.

Gist of the story. A couple from Franklin Furnace picked the dog up on Friday evening late, It was in Cincy on Saturday morning via Cynthiana, Ky. By Saturday afternoon, the dog has been vetted and scheduled for neutering. It took a little effort but success was the end result.

Don't give up and think a little more globally. The dog rescue people are NUTS but still good people. There are rescue groups in this area, you just have to use the computer to find them. Use Google and "rescue dog Beagle" as the search argument. I am sure there are more than one for Snoopy dogs.

This dog has now been at my house/on my porch/in my yard for 2 weeks. I have kept him tied up [on a 20' line - but I guess that's a horribly wrong thing to do or way to treat an animal] and confined to my porch/yard to protect him while I looked for his rightful home/owners.
BUT I have had no luck locating any previous owner despite advertising his location in multiple ways. On several occasions he has been "loose" and gleefully got out of my fenced yard. And he has then always showed back up HERE [he's as good at getting IN my yard as he he is at getting OUT].
If he can find his way back here why can't he find his way back there?
I really can't afford him and don't want him - but I am also unwilling to consign him to certain death, as turning him over to the Lawrence Co dog warden would. I need to find/decide on something to do with him pretty soon. I HATE this quandry - it seems there's no good outcome for either him or me!

This male dog has neither been neutered nor had a locater/identifier chip placed under his skin - two things that would have required a veterinarian's services. He wasn't wearing a collar or ID tags.
For all I know about him, he has never seen a vet or had the required shots PET dogs are supposed to get. That vet care alone requires/costs several hundred dollars just for starters to get him "legal" - never mind the continued cost and bother of feeding/tagging/vetting/caring for him over time.
In addition to his having access to the food, water, housing and weather protection I provide for my grandson's Boxer, I have already bought the Beagle a collar, a flea collar, had him bathed in anti-flea/tick shampoo, and washed all the rugs on the porch and bedding in the doghouse to rid/protect my grandson's Boxer from possible flea infestation from this new animal. I can't afford to keep doing all that, and I don't want this Beagle as a permanent pet - but I don't want him just killed either.
He's a sweet, cute, pretty well-behaved animal who deserves a good home - just NOT mine!

No luck at all in nearly 4 weeks of either locating previous owners or in finding anyone else willing to take him. I've done what I can, but I'm out of patience - he goes next week no matter what or where - even if it means consigning him to certain death. I can't afford the expense of keeping a second dog. To those who gleefully suggest he'd make a good meal - tell me where to meet you and you are welcome to have him to kill, skin, butcher, and cook to your heart's content - but you're not welcome to come to my house! Anyone interested in adopting this little Beagle as a pet speak right up.

I have been told by a couple of fairly knowledgeable people that he looks to be more than 1 year old, but probably not much over 2 years. How old does a dog have to be to begin training or gain the ability to "run rabbits"?

Seriously folks, I really am looking for a home for this dog. I'll give him another week or so and then he's pound-bound and doubtless toast and ashes. Or maybe I should just put him in my car, drive out of Ironton a good distance in any direction on any given highway: 52, 93, 141 - pull over, push the dog out in the ditch and drive off fast?? How's that for a solution?- OK with PATTYCAKES/littlefoot?

Caglewis, a good friend of mine who owns McCauley furniture by the name of Fred runs beagles out on 141 every Thursday, stop in and talk to him or call him and maybe he can give you some advice on how you might dispose of your beagle in a more humane way than putting it on the grill..............

^^^^^ Thanks, Charlie Hustle. I took a flier and a couple other pictures up to McCauley's and talked to Fred. He said he'd keep the flier on the counter at the store and ask all his "hound-loving" friends about finding a home for this dog. I can't keep him much longer.
