So my Boys live an hour apart from each other and yet I get the phone call saying mom instead of money this year for christmas can you just by me a GPS for the car. Since they both called I know they been sceeming on the phone.
they both used the same pitch line too.
You are better at researching these things and getting the best deal. and look at the bright side we wont be calling you asking directions when we are on the road.
SO heres the questions for the 4 brands I have found: Garmin, TomTom, Nextar, Megellian
Which Brand is best for the price?
Are Updates free? I know Megellian charges $80.00 for updates
What are the sppeaker qualities like?
How accurate is each brand?
What other features should I look for?

I don't trust them I was in Chillicothe and wanted to go to Circleville so I head up which ever route it told me ( it was a 4 lane) I had never been that way before I wanted to go downtown and it told me to turn in so many yards.. so I did and where did I end up? WAL-MART honest to goodness I am telling the truth and when I circled out of the parking lot it started talking to me telling me I was wrong blah blah blah... it also tells us to go up my in-laws drive way to go home.. it was a drive way that dead ended near my house many many years ago and never came to my house it goes crazy if you don't turn...
I think its a Garmin it belongs to my daughter she paid about 300 for it at Radio Shack Good Luck!

I use TomTom and I love it! I never bother with the updates, but I believe they are free with TomTom. Speakers are fine, as you can adjust the volume level.

We have a Tom Tom and love it. Of course if you do not do the updates you might end up off the road. This has happened to us and sometimes you might get the scenic route if you haven't updated. It pays to still have an atlas in the car just in case. But it is so smart on the time of arrival. Speakers work too good somtimes if everyone in the car is asleep.!!!!

WOW, I am shocked with the responses and Glad I asked. I have always heard people say that Garmin was the the best but with the price of them I alway wondered about the Tomtom. Glad to hear they are good.
Is there a particular model I should look at for TomTom? or will just any do?
I did read yesterday on Kmarts website not to buy a referbished one because they don't honor the uploads.

Yours prob.. needs updated, the Walmart in Circleville is right where the old exit was. They closed that down a few years ago and redid it all.

OnB If you wee going to downtown C-ville depending on exactly where you were going it may have been right on track. you turn in at walmart to get to the downtown area. it's all screwed up how they redid the roads when they built the new wal-mart. If you had followed the GPS you probable would have ended right where you wanted to go. In c-ville it's a true satement. to get anywhere you must go through Wal mart.
If you are on 23 south, it is shorter and faster to go thorugh Walmart to get on 22 over by Kroger heading toward Lancaster than it is to stay on 23 to the 22 exit.

I bought a cheap one at K-Mart for under $100.00.
It works great and has free updates.
You can put music and pictures on it too.

We have a Garman Nuvi. Works pretty. Sometime she doesn't give you much notice on turns when you're in big cities.
We were in Pittsburgh Saturday for a college visit and she was having problems locating us and was telling us to turn on streets that didn't exist. But she (we call it Judy. As in Judy Garman) is usually pretty good.
