Re: The Newest Medal Of Honor
The problem with "politically unpopular" wars is that their HEROES don't gain as much honor/recognition as those who served in other circumstances. That was true for Korean War and Vietnam War Vets when the Draft was still in effect. Kids who didn't want to be there at all were forced to serve - and even if they acted heroically, they didn't gain public recogniton or praise - quite the opposite - THEY were vilified for being there when they didn't have any choice in the matter.
Now in the eternal, no exit in sight, "Gulf War" era with an all-volunteer military, I'm afraid we think of "heroism" as just part of the job description, and fail to appreciate and reward it to the same extent as it as it was in WW II against the Nazis and the Japanese. War is war - battlefield is battlefield - and individual acts of heroism no matter where need to be recognized and applauded - never mind the "politics" that sent them there in the first place. All our military personel have chosen to put themselves in harm's way. I am fervently "anti-war"; but I recognize that our country needs a strong, well-trained, readily available, military defense force. I appreciate all those who serve in our Armed Forces and applaud recognition of individual acts of extraordinary valor. THANKS
