North Dakota-The state opened its first hunting season for mountain lions last September to gather information about the animals' population.A quota of five mountain lions was met in January,which ended the season before its scheduled March closing.

Ohio---In 1928,Don Castro built Grandview Avenue Shopping Center in Columbus.The center's 20-plus stores included four grocery stores and parking for 400 cars,and became a model for future shopping centers.

Still standing in Cairo is an Operation Skywatch tower built in 1952 during the Korean War,before a national radar system was in place. Civilians took shifts scanning the sky for enemy aircraft.A monument honors the watchers.

Kansas A large concrete cross near Lyons (pop. 3,732) commemorates the 1542 martyrdom of Farther Juan de Padilla,the first Christian martyrdom in America.Father Padilla accompanied Spanish explorer Francisco Vazquez de Coronado and was the first missionary to the Indians in what became Kansas.

On April 18,1997,residents of Grand Forks (pop. 49,321) and East Grand Forks,Minn. (7,501) ,evacuated as the Red River topped the dikes and flooded both towns.The next day,a fire in downtown Grand Forks damaged or destroyed 11 buildings.
