Airport security screeners seize about 1,000 hidden guns and about 1 million knives a year from passengers who either forget they're carrying them or try to smuggle them to another location. Screeners have also found a baby alligator hidden in a traveler's pants, a boa constrictor in a shoe, and numerous tarantulas.

The nearly 4.3 million births in 2006 constituted the largest number of children born in the U.S. in 45 years--mostly due to a large adult population,especially a growing number of Hispanics.

More Americans now die from misuse of prescription drugs-- including antidepressants, painkillers, and sleeping pills--than from herion and cocaine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported, Fatalities due to drug overdoes have been rising dramatically in the U.S. since 1999, largely because of the abuse of prescription drugs.

To deal with the boarded-up windows and unraked lawns that characterize foreclosed properties, Minneapolis officials are urging neighborhood associations to "adopt" foreclosed homes. Ongoing maintenance of abandoned properties can help prop up sagging market values.

There are some 10 million visually impaired people in the U.S., including about 1.3 million who, like David Paterson, the new governor of New York, are legally blind. Despite laws making it illegal to discriminate against the blind. only about 30 percent of working-age blind people have jobs.
