From 1893 to 1922, Junction City, Kansas photographer Joseph Judd Pennell took thousands of photos that document the people and history of the town. One of his classic photos of a Junction City bar became part of the opening credits for the NBC comedy Chers.

In 1994, rock climber Lynn Hill became the first person to free climb the Nose of El Captain, a 5,000-foot vertical rock foremation in Yosemite National Park, in a single day. Hill was born in 1961 in Detroit.

Karlstad, Minnesota proclaims itself the " Moose Capital of the North." Swedish settlers named the town after Karlstad, Sweden.

Ice skaters have been gliding at the Steinberg Skating Rink in Forest Park, in St. Louis since 1957. The rink, one of the largest outdoor ice skating rinks in the Midwest, was a gift from the family of successful investment broker Mark C. Steinberg, who was born in 1881 in St. Louis.

Frontier doctor Geogia Arbuckle Fix was the first femal graduate of the Omaha Medical School. In 1881, she enrolled in the first class with eight male students.

In 2003, residents of Jud, North Dakota began transforming their community into a "Village of Murals" by painting colorful images on buildings around town. Artists since have painted more than two dozen murals on buildings of all shapes, including a grain bin that resembles a carousel.

Born in 1872 in Dayton, Ohio, Paul Laurence Dunbar was the first black to gain national prominence as a poet. He published his first book of poems.--Oak and Ivy in 1893 and published numerous books of poetry, novels and music.

Life-size wax figures depict famous historical scenes, including the framers of the Constitution gathered to sign the Declaration of Independence and President George Bush at "Ground Zero" after 9/11, at the National Presidential Wax Museum in Keystone,South Dakota.

The worlds largest calzone made with 83 pounds of dough and measiring 19 feet 4 inches, was rolled out last November at loveshack Calzone in Madison, Wisconsin. A calzone is an Italian turnover made of pizza dough and stuffed with cheese, meat, vegetables and other fillings

Cathy and Eric Keesling, of New Castle, Indiana saved an abandoned kitten years ago by nursing her with an eyedropper. The cat, Winnie, returned the favor by saving the Keesling family in March 2007. Winnie meaowed and nudged Cathy until she awoke, disoriented from carbon monoxide poisoning. Winnie was named 2007 "Cat of the year" by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The first American woman to die in active service during World War I was Marion Crandall, also spelled Crandell, who was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1872. She worked with soldiers at a YMCA in Paris and was killed in 1918 by German artilery striking the building where she was lodging

Randolph Cabral, president of Kansas Braille Transscription Institude in Wichita, designed a Braille flag in memory of his late father, a World War II vetern who flew the flag until he no longer could see it because of glaucoma. The tactile flag informs the blind of the flag's colors, stripes and stars.

A popular treat in Tyler,Minnesota are aebleskiver, Danish pancakes shaped like tennis balls, often filled with fruit, and cooked in special aebleskiver pans. The town holds an Aebleskiver n July.

The last American veteran of World War I is Frank Buckles,107, who was born in Bethany, Missouri in 1901. Buckles, who Lives in Charles Town, W.Va. lied about his age to join the Army and provided ambulance service in France in 1917 and 1918.
