Re: PRP OPEN?
This is off the PRP site, looks like they had a good race.
Portsmouth Raceway Park honored the area’s veterans Saturday night with free admission to the track’s long-awaited season-opener. Each vet was individually recognized and awarded a door prize as a small token of appreciation for their service.
A good crowd was on hand to watch a hard-fought Late Model feature and some surprise endings in the Modified, Limited Late Model, and Bomber Divisions.
Portsmouth Raceway was blessed with one of its most diverse crowds Saturday, as ages varied from two-week old Braden Adkins to a pair of vets who fought in World War II, including PRP staff member Vaughn Hinze who hit Normandy Beach the day after D-Day.
Grayson, KY’s Jackie Boggs officially led all 25 laps of the Late Model A-Main but received a serious challenge from Wallingford, KY’s Arnie Fields in the early stages of the event. Fields, who held off Boggs to win the WPAY Dash earlier in the evening, actually managed to dive under Boggs in turns one and two and lead the field down the backstretch on lap two, but Boggs returned the favor in turn three to reestablish a lead he would never relinquish.
Boggs eventually managed to put some distance in between he and the rest of the field, but the racing from second on back was fierce. Early on, defending track champ Audie Swartz and Arnie Fields swapped some paint while battling for secnd. Eventually both fell from the top three.
During the first portion of the event, the bottom line was the groove of choice, but South Shore, KY’s Butch Dowdy was one of the first to make the high road work. Dowdy climbed to second before being overtaken by Wheelersburg’s Josh Bocook in the closing laps.
As for the other classes, the surprise was that typically dominant drivers Doug Adkins in the Modified Division and John Melvin in the Limited Late Model Division recorded DNF’s instead of usual feature wins.
Adkins found himself leading the Modified A-Main early but car problems forced him to the pits handing the lead over to eventual winner South Point, OH’s Todd Robinson.Melvin had several near misses with the outside wall off of turn two before finally tagging it around the halfway point of the Limited Late Model A-Main. A few laps later he pulled off.
Boyd County, KY native Evyian Terry posted the win in the Limited Late Model class. He looked dominant leading every single lap. In a post-race interview with PRP, Terry told that some of his crew members actually had to go to a FedEX warehouse to get some extremely important engine parts he needed in order to have his No. 58 machine race ready. The crew’s parts-run trip to FedEX and hard work in the garage Saturday afternoon paid off on Saturday night.
The Bomber feature didn’t lack drama either. Greenup, KY’s Joe McGinnis picked up his first-ever feature win as he fended off reigning track champ Shane Pendleton to take the checkers. McGinnis was received in victory lane by at least 20 children who stuck around for PRP’s nightly Impact Graphics & Apparel Victory Lane Party which takes place at the conclusion of the evening’s final A-Main. In winner’s circle all participating children were treated to candy and the chance to have their photo taken with the Bomber feature winner. Many even sought Joe’s autograph, which he gladly provided.
The next two weeks will be big for PRP’s Late Models. While most journeymen might travel to El Dora this coming Saturday, June 7th for “The Dreamâ€, B&C Flooring of Waverly wants to utilize this coming weekend to specifically patronize PRP’s regulars. As a result, B&C Flooring on US 23 in Waverly, OH will add $1,000 to this coming Saturday’s Late Model purse. The Fast Qualifier will pocket $500 of that. The remaining $500 will go to the feature winner making this weekend’s race a total of $2,500 to win.
Along with the Late Models this Saturday will be Modifieds, Limited Lates, and Bombers.
Don’t forget, the Independent Racing Series Late Models will visit PRP in two weeks on June 14th.

Portsmouth Raceway Park partnered with Gahm’s Car & Trucks, NAPA Auto Parts, and 105.7 FM WLGC for its annual Kids Night Saturday.
top RJ Conley, Doug “The Buzzard†Adkins, John Melvin, and Billy Gullion took honors in their respective features to the delight of many young on-lookers.
PRP began its evening with numerous games and activities for the 12-and-under crowd which started at 4 p.m. and ran up until race time. Prizes were given away throughout the night including bicycles, t-shirts, Frisbees, Play-Dough, and more. Some of the largest treats for both the young and young at heart seemed to be the interest that many of PRP’s racers took in the event.
Following RJ Conley’s feature win in the Late Model Division, he came to the base of the flagstand and gave autographs to all children who wanted them, and there were a bunch! Conley provided signature after signature for at least 20 minutes and did so on his very own personalized postcard that his wife kindly supplied to all of the kids.
Modified A-Main winner Doug Adkins invited all the fence-hugging children to come down into victory lane and have their photograph taken with him during his post-race ceremonies. Earlier in the afternoon while the children’s games were taking place, Adkins came down to the general admission gate and passed out candy to the little ones.
Following the final event of the night, the Bomber A-Main, all children were invited onto the track for PRP’s nightly “Impact Signs and Apparel†Victory Lane Party. There they had their photo taken with winner Billy Gullion and were treated with candy and a Late Model coloring page. The 19-year-old Gullion, who was celebrating his first-ever PRP feature win, took nearly half an hour to provide autographs to all the young race fans.
In addition to all of children-oriented fun, PRP fans were treated to a great night of racing. Nearly 80 race teams were on hand, and there were several exciting finishes. Some of the most competitive action occurred in the Bomber heats, as it typically does. Some of the most dramatic action occurred when the entire top three of the second Modified Heat race were disqualified because they all forgot to cross the scales following the race. (By the way, that entire trio raced their way into the feature through the B-Main, and all wound up finishing in the top eight of the A-Main.)
While Conley had everyone covered in his Conley Motorsports #71C, Hazard, KY’s Eric Wells had a strong showing, as he finished second. Grayson, KY’s Jackie Boggs earned the “Pendleton Truck Sales†Hardcharger Award, as he moved from seventh to third. Fellow Grayson driver Josh McGuire placed fourth, and Ironton’s Joe Ramey enjoyed one of his best nights ever at PRP finishing in fifth. Defending track champ Audie Swartz posted the “Automania†Fast Time and drove his Ford to a sixth-place finish.
In the Modified Division, Adkins was once again on a tear, but the West Portsmouth native had to work for it. Rick Hensley put forth a good effort to finish second. Greg Anderson came in third. Todd Robinson advanced 14 positions to finish fourth and take the “Up Front Motorsports†Hardcharger Award. Adam Jordan rounded out the front five.
Coal Grove’s John Melvin was again the man to beat in the Limited Late Model Class, but Evyian Terry wasn’t too far behind. Jeff Stevens, Gary Childers, and Michael “The Ratchet†Ratliff rounded out the top three. Ratliff earned the “CP’s Racing Parts & Supplies†Hardcharger Award.
In the Bomber Division, Billy Gullion and Greenup, KY’s Joe McGinnis went wheel to wheel for the first couple of laps before McGinnis spun to hand the lead over to Gullion for good. The Waverly teenager fended off Shane and Darren Pendleton to claim his first PRP feature. Vincent Pierce and Jason Rayburn rounded out the top five.
Portsmouth Raceway Park will take next weekend off before returning to action on Friday, July 4th for the first of two big nights of racing over the holiday weekend. On the Fourth, PRP will welcome the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series which will be on hand for the Weaver’s Gas & Oil Late Model Shootout paying $5,000 to win. Also racing that night will be Mods and Bombers. On Saturday, July 5th the MACS return for the Pepsi 75 paying $10,000 to the winner. Along with the Late Models will be Mods and Limited Lates
Re: PRP OPEN?
