We can agree to disagree about the last sentence and you are correct it is the team and the fan involvement that creates atmosphere. But, as a player I think you would want the crowd on the floor.
I think most coaches, especially the visiting coach, would prefer the crowd not to be on the floor or on top on the play. It creates too much distraction for the players.
However, a gym that has little or no depth behind the basket, preferably a wall, gives the shooter a better depth of field in which to judge his shot vs the openness behind the basket at a place like the Convo or the Schott.
