Travis Bradford would be a great hire --I love his approach. Super young coach that will only get better . MD

Yes, lets hire someone from within our great basketball tradition here at West. LOL
Lets look outside and find someone who is going to change the culture of the program. I don't think that this would apply to anyone who has recently been or still is in the program.

general you can take one coach off your list, heard a little while ago he isnt interested in the job
Re: Ports. West coach resigns
SSU Grad - couldn't agree more! However, I think Smith tried to change the culture of the program. We see how far that went. What are the pros to hiring someone within the West system already??

Rookie, YES, the main ingredient for a successful coach is the KIDS HAVE TO LIKE AND RESPECT HIM OR HER----THEY HAVE TO BUY INTO A PROGRAM FOR IT TO BE SUCCESSFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hard to believe you are not aware of that. Apparently from what I have been told, West did not have that kind of leadership last year.... I do not have a dog in the fight, I live in South Point. I would like to see them get it right though. Good luck, I really doubt they will listen to anyone on the internet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Ports. West coach resigns
I think that Coach Bradford would be on most people's wish list. But I've also heard that he's not interested. Don't know how true that is though. A proven coach, a teacher, and from the Westside. Perfect candidate, thats why our school board won't go after him. Even if he is interested.
Coach Phillips is a better boys coach than a girls coach. I think that he would have been better suited to have been with the boys all along (not afraid to yell). He could have had a really good jv season, if was able to use all the underclassmen. Most games he would have to save quarters for the varisity team. He is from the Westside, and does have help on the school board. But he is not a teacher.
Coach Hurd is an excellent young coach. Friends with most of the parents. So he knows the kids, and the kids like him. Has done an excellent job with the jr high and peewee. He is not a teacher, and he is a young coach. But no one would put forth any more effort than he would.
Coach Kitchen has varsity experience. The parents on the Westside seem to like him. The kids seemed to have liked him. He is a teacher. Met him while coaching at West. He seemed really excited about things to come. Then steps in our famous school board, and lets him go. Never heard anything bad that did'nt come from Green. Does have pull with the Assistant A.D.
Just some of the pro's and con's of what seems to be the top 4 candidates. I think that each one would give us their best effort. Bradford stays put. Hurd and Phillips may be a year or two away. So my bet is that Coach Kitchen comes back.

Actually, kids don't have to like a coach to play for them. If any kid is playing solely because of a coach, they are playing for the wrong reasons. What has happened to inner fortitude? Drive yourself to be good, don't rely on someone else to do it for you.

Re: Ports. West coach resigns
Please, this is the last I will say about it...if a GROUP of kids do not respect a coach, (maybe because the coach let's a kid quit then come back or maybe because practice is not intense or disciplined, maybe whatever etc etc etc,) they are not going to respond the way another coach may get them to...kids want structure and they enjoy winning....great coaches are able to understand this. Once kids buy into a program, that is half the battle.
Sure, if you have athletes, they can get by, but it takes someone to bring out the best in them, develop something around that particular group of kids, to have a PROGRAM. If they talk about the coach in a derogatory manner behind the coaches back, yes, that is terrible, but, it will make it real hard to develop something positive. You are assuming a coach is awesome and so what if the kids don't like him.....

black-orange you know if these four our interested or anyone else. seems to me that they will have trouble attracting coachs from the outside with all the problems that has happen the last several years. for your list i have seen bradford and phillips coach and i believe they would do a fine job. havent seen hurd or kitchen coach i just think hurd coming from jr high to varsity would be rough (maybe go to jv first)as for kitchen i dont know what all happen at west when he help tripplett out to not be hired back and it doesnt look good to resign in the middle of the season.

I don't know for sure who will apply. I know that Coach Kitchen came to alot of games down the stretch. And is available. Been in the system. Everybody seems to like him.
I know that Coach Phillips knows the boys real well. Tyson also knows basketball, if he can get his knowledge to his players he will be succsessful. Thats where I think that being a boys coach, instead of a girls coach, will help him. Already in the system.
Coach Hurd might be the diamond in the rough. Good coach, is what I whould say is a players coach. Knows all the kids, all the parents, and I've never really heard anything bad about him. He could use a little more experience. But at this point I would be willing to grow with him. But I whould hate to lose a good jr high coach.
I think Coach Bradford could really make an inpact on reputation alone. He is the only proven Coach/Alumni that we have. I think that everybody respects what he has done at East. There is alot of people on here not giving Sciotoville credit for their community pride. But look at their football support. But like I said earlier, I heard he's not interested. I think he has a nephew, or second cousin on the team.
All this being said, They should have hired Rick Ferrell when they had the chance!
Re: Ports. West coach resigns
If Travis Bradford doesn't want the job, then the two guys considered should be Kitchen and if he turns them down, Jason Hurd.
The school board said basically said Kitchen could have the job last time but they wouldn't give him a teaching position. They did say that he could sub and that their was a big need for that. Any other school would have manufactured something, but our board doesn't car about sports.
I know someone that talks to him. He said he still wished he would've taken the job before anyway and would be very interested again.
To me, if he's interested I don't see how you could not want him. He came into a bad situation before and turned the team into a winner. By the end of the year, their basketball IQ looked liked it had risen 10 notches. They understood tempo, where to get the ball, and what is a good shot. Things I hadn't seen at West.
The relationship that he has with Tripplet cannot be undervalued, as a majority of the basketball players play football. Offseason workouts will be better. I'm sure more communication between the coaches will allow more leaniantsy so players can workout for both sports and still do some offseason basketball. It would be a win win.

Schools don't have the money to "manufacture " something. Most of the Southern Ohio schools are in financial trouble. You can't "manufacture" a job for a head coach in this economy.
