Re: Can Athens Region produce another State Champ
The girls side is a different story. I compare girls basketball to where the boys probrams were in the 60-70's. There were a few who worked on their game year around, but most just played during the season. Boys basketball is at a point where you have a lot of kids playing year round. What does this mean, that the percentage of great girls players compared to great boys players is less. Less amount of very good players means that one or two very good girls on a team equals a higher percentage of success. Whereas in boys, your entire team better be very good to create a dynasty like Cleveland Regina.
Like I have stated, you have a lot of teams in rural se ohio who have benefitted from transfers, South Webster and Oak Hill. How can we expect the ohsaa to change, when there are those around us playing the same game. Is it wrong, no they are only doing what they rest of the state is and you are seeing a higher percentage of Se ohio teams competing on the big stage and winning.
Wheelersburg and Ironton had a chance to win it, which means in the last 8 years, SE ohio has had 5 teams in the championship game and 3 won it, South Webster, Chillicothe and Oak Hill. Plus what 4 other teams, Eastern Brown, North Adams, Logan Elm and Piketon made it to the final four. SE Ohio is catching up. IMO

Whiteoak made it in Div. 4 the same year Eastern Brown did, I believe 2002. They lost in the semi-final game.

The only way you can halfway compete with it is with kids "transferring". As already mentioned, all of the state champions from these parts in the past few years have had major transfers (S.W., Chilly, Oak Hill). Two of those 3 have been in division 4 which makes it easier as well.
I agree. I'm just saying one it is wrong. If the OHSAA has all these loop holes, they should just make open enrollment. If the school wants to take you, let them. It just sucks that the public schools have to abide by living in school districts and a sneaking around and making it hard on parents, when private schools just do darn near anything they want! Lebron proved that. He even brings his own coach, which he even stated was his summer AAU coach too. I'm pretty sure that is a violation too!
