LOL , go ahead and play Zone.. Game one 99 points against zone.
The radio said Ironton played zone nearly the entire game, so this comment is pretty funny.
Again, West Union's zone isn't really comparable to one like Ironton would run --- just as art vandelay stated.

I would venture to say that a lot more teams will play a zone against Burg and force them to shoot from the outside. And they will score against weaker teams but teams that play a good zone will give them problems. 99 may not happen again this season. Not every team is a West Union. Valley lost nearly everyone and still had a chance to win with the zone they played. And as shown tonight, a good zone is the way to beat Burg.
Re: 12/13 Wheelersburg @ Ironton
Burgs going to struggle to score in half court sets in most games. They just don't shoot the ball very well. Won't win very many close games shooting free throws like they did tonight.Madness wrote:I would venture to say that a lot more teams will play a zone against Burg and force them to shoot from the outside. Vass before transfers 229-75 burg 5-1, Pendleton and transfers 211-84 6-2 ironton

You don't have to be John Wooden to know that you can't beat a good, aggressive 2-3 zone with a 5-out open offense. Jacking up bad shots and being "one and done" doesn't give your rebounders a chance, especially when they're out around the perimeter setting screens and way out of position. Wheelersburg played selfish basketball, showed a lack of discipline (free throws) and played terrible defense (other than Newsome and Coleman) against a young, well-coached Ironton squad. LaFon had his boys excited, prepared, and Ater got outcoached for the second time in the last two games.

There's nothing wrong with a 5-out open offense, and you can no doubt win with that. It is the direction that basketball is headed in modern times - positionless, fast, shooting threes and layups. Contested twos are the worst shot in basketball, and that has been statistically proven. Wheelersburg just did not do a good job executing the offense last night. That could be different once the Pirates get their basketball legs come January and February. They will be tough to handle.
That said I thought the young Tigers played hard and well for this early date. They matched Wheelersburg's physicality, as this game was not for the feint of heart. And they still have a pretty good rebounder and defender healing up an ankle who, if healthy, could help Ironton become an even tougher matchup in 2017.
Neither of these teams is Fairland, yet, but both should have good seasons.

Re: 12/13 Wheelersburg @ Ironton
After seeing this game, Ironton did not play a better zone then West Union or valley. Burg shot 12/28 for 43% with 3 against WU, and 2/19 against Valley 11%. Both games the 3 was open in fact all 3 games. What kept Valley close was they shot 8/18 44% with the 3 and were 10 for 10 on free throws, while the burg was 16/24 67%.. The Ironton game , the burg missed 10 free throws in a row. The Burg has much talent and will be a team to beat very soon

Re: 12/13 Wheelersburg @ Ironton
Was at the game last night, and I don't think there's any doubt that Wheelersburg's poor performance at the FT line really cost them in this game. I thought Rafael Glover and #22 (Ryan Adkins?) for Ironton played well, while Ryan Bryant did a good job on the boards. Ironton led for most of the game but couldn't quite put the Pirates away until the final 2 minutes. Really good crowd for the game.
Re: 12/13 Wheelersburg @ Ironton
Foul shots and outside shooting has been a weakness for Burg for a few years. You will lose close games at the foul line and you can shoot your self out of a game by playing without a post and trying to hit contested 3s all game long. You will lose to good teams and decent teams will give you a run. That will be where the free throws can win or lose a game for you. Really won't be shocked if some lesser talented teams beat them this year based solely on bad shooting.

This already happened with Ironton beating them. 4 for 16 free throws 25% will hurt every time Ironton 13/18 for 72%. Stats rebounds Burg 38.. Ironton 40.. Turnovers Burg 9.. Ironton 17... Shooting Burg 19/74 for 26%.. Ironton 21/47 for 45%... 3 points Burg 7/30 23%... Ironton 2/12 17%..
Re: 12/13 Wheelersburg @ Ironton
So I guess playing a zone would give teams of lesser talent a chance to beat Burg because of the bad shooting stats. Glad the percentages support my thoughts. Glad someone has the stats because PDT hasn't had many. I guess coaches are to busy to call them in.

Agree 100%. This is becoming a theme with the Boys Basketball Program.
