Athens Next Coach
Re: Athens Next Coach
Probably will be moved on soon with open gyms, and summer planning to be done.
Re: Athens Next Coach
Perhaps the next coach will be a multitasker. The last one only worked on one aspect of the game each year, with defense yet to be emphasized. Who ever it is he has his work cut out for him. The "family" was beyond disfunctional. ( IMHO)

i think its dumb they fired him in the first place....going from 1-20 to 10-11 is a pretty good turnaround and they have a good class coming up too and with the team he had last year they needed to be an offensive minded team

First of all, I'm not supporting nor condemning the firing of the Athens coach. I want to get that out of the way... just trying to give a fresh perspective. I do believe the firing was due to a combination of things that usually is summed up as a clash of personalities or a coach not being a quite a good fit. Whether it was deserved or not, there was a combination of some minor tensions there for other reasons than record.
I wish the next coach at Athens luck. It would be nice to see a resurgence in the program. Basketball is not an easy sell at Athens and it seems that a lot of athletes have given up on it to concentrate on other sports. Hockey is a big draw for the students (they have even won a state championship recently) and makes it a little tougher, the wrestling program is awesome, and some of the players have played club indoor soccer instead, or even some baseball guys who are skipping basketball to get ready for that season. However, with the number of boys in the high school, it should still allow for a varsity sport that usually only has, at most, 12 guys. I get annoyed when soccer gets blamed for the woes of some school's football program, so I don't think other sports are the main problem in this case either.
I think Athens should be expected to be able to throw together a better team of at least 5-6 good players with a supporting cast that can become more competitive. Athens has had some pretty good freshmen teams and decent JV teams over the last few years. However, they haven't translated into varsity teams. I know of several players over the years who were good athletes, but quit because they were tired of waiting behind older players or lack of playing time. Maybe this trend will end.
Hopefully, with a new coach, it will bring some new excitement. Whoever it is, I hope they're good to the kids and can bring some continuity to the program. There are good kids and good athletes on the team. I think they can continue to improve and wish them luck next year.

Re: Athens Next Coach
At Athens they have a bad babit of letting good people go because mommy and daddy don't like them. I don't know if that was the case or not here but it has happened a lot in the past.
Re: Athens Next Coach
Actually, it has been 3 coaches in the last 11 years. Coach Robinson left to take the AD job of his own free will. The basketball program wasn't in a sorry state (outside perception is a guess at best) and I don't believe the school is looking for a miracle worker. They are looking for someone that believes in the kids and the community. Someone who has and will be committed to both.

i know of a coach but, i don't think athens player/parents would like him. he doesn't play the "my name is" game.

I'm assuming you're saying the previous coaches played certain players due to family influence? Not sure that's the case... tired of hearing that Athens is a school where money or family comes into play. I highly doubt a coach considers income or family names when he makes out the lineup. People have been using this tired excuse for years. Just because people use it over and over, doesn't make it true.
If this coach you know is a good coach who can relate to the kids and teach sound, fundamental basketball, he should put his name in. If he wins... people will like him just fine.

Amen soccerfanatic. Tired excuse at the very least. Logan has their own problems with delusion of grandeur being the biggest. Go north big boys.

Will the Superintendent hire recommend him? Word is no since he was let go once. Could this be more politics from Athens. I hope not. Are they running any open gyms at all right now? If so who is running them?

don't jump to the logan beating bus. i was only stating what has been rumored. i would love to see athens doing good. i would hope that not the case.
the last time i talked to him he was thinking about it. he is looking to stay in the area. if he does put it for it and his is picked. athens will win! alot!
