What about a kid who didn't play sports in ninth grade, family moves over the summer and he's/she's at a new school for 10th grade and they want to play?
I'm not sure you can close all the "loopholes."
JMO ...

All kids. No loopholes. Move into an Ohio District you are ineligible for one year to play sports. Period!! NO more Clearer then that right there. I feel like that Mobil to Mobil commercial where the firefighters are running congress and making decisions easily.

Wow!!!
Boy, Regulator, you must live in a school district that's just been pillaged by recruiters!!!!
Or a coach who hasn't been successful in the recruiting wars!!!
Like I said before, the cow offer trumps the goat offer!

South Webster, if you must know. The Jeeps have benefited from some great transfers. Anyhow, that doesn't matter.
It is people like you that think transfers are just fine and there are no problems. I personally think it is becoming an epidemic in the schools. Getting worse then it ever has been. I blame people like witnessprotection and AAU ball. Many kids use this as an avenue to "talk" to their buddies about joining them in high school.
Are you saying coaches have been in recruiting wars with other coaches?

Boy witpro, now it is all your fault along with AAU basketball. Ohio should change their rules to match the other 49 states to eliminate the three from a school rule and that may cure some of the problem. I bet you didn't know you had that kind of pull did you witpro?

Ball players are made in the summer and AAU ball is the best outlet to find kids with extreme interests in the same sport. Players are better because of AAU ball, period. Plus the college recruiters come out in full force to watch so, i say again, live with it! I've been around it and it is awesome for the kids development.

I don't think witpro is in favor of switching schools year to year but also is not wanting to eliminate the possibility for the kids or to hurt any player b/c of circumstances out of their control.

I still stand by my guns in that coaches or systems don't have to actively recruit but the programs recruit themselves because of the coaching or system they offer.

Kids that become content with being the best in town or county are not going to be as competitive as kids that seek the best competition in the state or region. When kids grow up together they generally try to outdo each other and may not reach their full potential due to the competition and that holds them back, the newbies often times offer a stronger challenge and push kids to excell. Final result is competing outside the league or even deep into to the playoffs.

I think we all can see thru the "better education" philosophy. Better competition though is a totally different line of thinking. Why hold kids back or lessen the opportunity to achieve their dreams.

Whoa there, Regulator!
Did you not see my little laughing minions?

They're laughing because I was making a joke, which apparently wasn't that funny because I had to explain it.
My bad!
I'm not saying transfers don't present some issues, but I also don't think it's the "epidemic" you believe it is, either.
I've seen parents move their kids to another school for a variety of reasons, including better academics, music program, art program (quickly dying in Ohio, BTW), safety, etc.
Should there be regulations regarding transfers? Absolutely!
However, as long as Ohio remains an "open enrollment" state, you're going to have transfers.
All I'm saying is that I don't think you should throw the baby out with the bath water by punishing a kid whose family legitimately moves to another district.

It wouldn't be right to keep a kid from playing sports for a year though if its a legit move. If a kid has played a sport for his entire life and come his senior year maybe his parents have to move because of their job you cannot punish the student for that. So are you going to take away what could possibly be the last year this kid ever has to play this sport on a team, for something out of his control?

This really got a conversation going huh?

I agree with the programs recruit themselves thing and it's funny whenever things like this happened to Oak Hill everyone was there to criticize it but when it's their own school getting the players their mouths are shut! :|

It may not be right, but it would be a rule everyone understands. Instead we have 5-6 rules on transfering and not too many people understand the rule other then it can be bent one way or the other. Plain and simple, you transfer, you sit out for one calendar year.

No way you can make a kid sit out for one year. This isn't college where they can red shirt and have 5 years of eligibility. If it's legit, you are completely killing the kid and stealing a year from him. That just can't happen.

Now, lately SE Ohio has earned a little respect! Respect that some of the same posters on here b**ch about when we didn't get a representative to state because we would get beat by some usually Catholic or Private school in regionals that recruit! Well lately we have had some serious respect. Alexander Volleyball, State Runner-up 07, Champions 08, South Webster Boys Basketball, State Champs, Oak Hill Girls and Boys Basketball, Girls Runner-up, Boys Champs, Piketon Boys Basketball State Runner-up and I missing a couple but just to make a point. Every team mentioned here has transfers. If we want to compete and try to make an equal playing field, then the writing is on the wall. Like it or not, we struggle to be competitive when we don't have a little help.

so you are condoning transfers?

4 years of eligibility in high school. you transfer, expect to sit out. Can't get any more plain then that. It would even out the playing field across the state.

It would if private schools had to abide by the same rules, but they don't. That is the bigger debate!

If you are enrolled in a private school your freshmen year then you are fine, if you transfer between years then you are ineligible regardless of private or public.

I could not disagree more. I dont know who you are but before you go and make an irrational statement like that, think. We got transfers to so youre just asking for ridicule.
