Re: Man-to-Man or Zone Defense
Man to man defense is my favorite........and I like a full court press also.......I strongly dislike zone but I understand it has its merits.........a matchup zone would be my preference over any other zone.

It is a situational decision. I have seen both used very effectively. For the fan, the man to man is more 'exciting' but as a coach, I would want a well designed zone and a box-and-one for many situations. You will win more games but it takes more discipline and team work. Not always easy to do for some coaches and with certain rosters.

I say you stay man to man unless the team is your are playing is bigger and not good shooters then I say you go with 2-3 zone or ne zone for that matter but it depends on the sitatution

Man to Man defense. A match-up zone when needed. Full-Court Pressure all the time....
Re: Man-to-Man or Zone Defense
I have seen too many teams try to play man to man with a faster more athletic opponent and get beat on back door cuts and pick and rolls giving up lots of points on high percentage shots, i.e. layups. I like a zone until your opponent proves he can shoot over you, unless you are loaded with speed, then go man to man.

Just simply out score your opponents and who needs defense? Make sure you score in triple digits every game and you can play any defense you want.

I love watching aggressive man to man pressure defense...like Eastern Pike played last season and hopefully even better this year!

Whatever works best for the individual program, one thing is certain: The best teams can switch to either at a moments notice.
Re: Man-to-Man or Zone Defense
BOTH. Unless you are superiorly talented, you need ot do both effectively to be a great defense. Teams can be good doing one or the other, but unless you are physically superior to those you play, you must do both.
I prefer to press ALL THE TIME unless you're team is slow. Play a match-up zone, swith between a 2-3 and a 3-2 and play aggressive man to man. The key is not what you do, but when you do it. If you can show zone and then jump into a man and get a steal, or jump from man to zone and draw a bad shot, etc. That is how you play D. Just as in football, keep the O guessing. Don't let the offense be comfortable.
The best Defensive philosophy I have ever heard, was Nolan Richardson whom simply wanted to create "40 minutes of hell" for the opponents. Man, zone, press, whatever. Just do it with intensity and in-your-face defense.

Man to man pressure d is the berries when played correctly.I didn't get to watch Eastern last year and now i really wished i would have. When played correctly pressure d can look a lot like a zone defense.but it is hard to have the discipline to play it soundly for 4 quarters.
