SHOT CLOCK-WHAT DO YOU THINK

Post by TIM RIGGINS 33 »

More and more people want to institute a shot clock for high school basketball. I couldn't disagree more. A team that has forged a lead and is capable of passing the ball effectively in the final minutes of a close game should not be penalized, which is what a shot clock would do.

Can't see it happening...you are adding another person to the scorers table to operate the clock...installation of the clock on both ends of the floor...at every high school in the state...getting into some $$$$...also...put a shot clock on a team that isnt fundamentally sound...every thirty seconds they will force a shot up whether it's a good one or not....not teaching them shot selection or making good decisions on the floor.

That is my biggest beef with high school basketball; I think we need to have shot clocks bad. If a team is up in overtime, for example, by a score and they get the ball back, they can play keep away for the rest of the time if they want to. Not good, I think you should have to play the game until the game is over.

How would you penalize teams by adding the shot clock? I think it would do more for a team in the long run for both a good and bad team because they need to keep playing the game instead of just passing lazily for three minutes in a posession (maybe I'm being a little extreme with the example, but the point remains the same).

I dont think it will happen...but i do think that if it did happen...the clock should be 45 seconds to a minute.Thats plenty of time to run an offensive set and shouldnt rush any team at all. Plus it would prevent teams from just standing with the ball and wasting time...for example...Belpre played @ VC one year in which VC was favored to win the game. Belpre had kept it fairly close in the first half..i think it was around a 10 point game..maybe less...But anyways..Since Belpre was definatly in the game to this point..the point guard stood way out by the half coart line and ran the final 3 minutes of the half off...at least it would prevent that from happening. But like i said...i dont see it anytime in the near future.

A point guard can't stand at halfcourt for 3 minutes if you play defense. If you don't like it and can't play defense then foul them and put them on the line.

I think having a "shot clock" to worry about is a "next level" kind of thing.
High school kids should be encouraged to focus on developing, and getting good at, basic skills, not "big-time" fancy stuff! Plus - how many high schools have the technical equipment and personel to adequately keep that kind of close clock time?

If a shot clock was implemented I can guarantee the best team will always win. No more of these teams draining the clock and sitting on leads. Football has a play clock and basketball should have a shot clock. Nobody wants to see a kid stand at half court with the ball under his arm for 5 minutes. It would make the game higher scoring and more exciting. Like I said before it will also seperate the good teams from the bad teams. The Ohio State Buckeyes could keep a game close with the Los Angeles Lakers if they held the ball all night.

The better team would win huh? LOL that might be the craziest thing I ever heard, no wait a second, make it more exciting, now that is the craziest thing I have heard! LOL I didnt know these young men and women were out there for your entertainment! The coach and players do what they have to do to win games! I guarantee if you ask a kid what would you rather have, average 20 points a game and lose, or 5 and win? Pretty easy answer. Also, you guys do realize that any rule implemented for varsity goes all the way down to the 7th grade, right? Imagine that brand of basketball! Why does everyone associate being good, with scoring points, because they dont know basketball or the effort it takes on all parts of the game.

I have watched and coached and played basketball for 32 years, I have watched a team stall maybe a handful of times. NO SHOT CLOCK!

Yes you heard that correct. The better team will win and it will make the game more exciting. You are probably one of those coaches who plays that spoiling style of ball which is why you are so defensive. I watched the state title game with Oak Hill on tv last year, and the team they played used this tactic. It was horrible to watch, and Oak Hill probably would have won the game by 15 if not for this. The only reason that team was even in the game is because they sat on the ball all night. A shot clock forces a mediocre or bad team to play and not just spoil. Now I am not saying implement a 24 second shot clock like the NBA. It should be more like 45 seconds. If a team can't find a good shot within 45 seconds then they deserve to get a violation.

No to the shot clock. If you come out and guard them, they won't hold the ball for 3 minutes.

Exactly, and I dont want to hear the argument about shot selection, if a team can't get a decent shot in 30 seconds then they don't deserve to have the ball anymore, thats the dumbest thing ive ever heard

Wow, the basketball knowledge on this thread is indeed lacking! Just shows you what the NBA, sportscenter and now major college basketball has done to us, highlights, dunks and scoring are all that is important to people! Hey, scoring isnt the ALL encompassing factor of determining greatness! Ball handling, rebounding, DEFENSE, are all major factors in being considered good. Some of you need to actually watch a game, and not just focus on that guy that scores!

Daniel, and you were probably one of those players that all they could do was spot up 20 feet from the basket and hope someone would make a play and get you open for your set shot!

I think that would hurt the game and where are the schools suppose to get the money for a shot clock?

Probably not a bad idea since anyone moving on to the next level will have to deal with it (like the 3 point shot line was years back), but it will never happen. Money just isn't there for school to implement.

Search the old posts on every sports forum in the state of Ohio, and you'll find that the shot clock gets hashed and rehashed every year...

Find something better to whine about.
