12/11/09 Wellston Rockets Vs. Nelsonville-York Buckeyes
Any thoughts?
Who walks away with this TVC matchup?
What players can step up and make a difference in the game?

Watched New Lex scrimmage NY, was not impressed. They had some size but didn't really use it, wasn't a lot of basketball skill and the only kid who handled the ball well split time between the varsity and junior varsity. They also didn't seem very organized.

Re: 12/11/09 Wellston Rockets Vs. Nelsonville-York Buckeyes
Game was 13-13 at half.
What is unusual is that the game was at Wellston and the Rockets had two technicals called on them. One on Coach Derrow for being on the floor at 4:24 of the third Q and the other on a player in the 3rd. The resulting FT game N-Y all the momentum they needed to win according to the news article I read in reference to the game.
Sounds like Wellston is in for another down year for sure.

Re: 12/11/09 Wellston Rockets Vs. Nelsonville-York Buckeyes
Here's the game report. Coach Derrow's technical was the result of him being out of the coach's box on the baseline side of the court nearest the basket. He was talking to Cody Wilkett in that corner area and all of the sudden the official gave the technical.

WELLSTON — The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes, and Tyler Goodin, made it a good one on Friday night at Wellston High School.
With Nelsonville-York clinging to a one-point lead, and with the final shot of the third quarter, Goodin’s catch-and-shoot shot gave the Buckeyes a much-needed shot-in-the-arm entering the final frame.
The Buckeyes then pulled away from the host Golden Rockets, doubling up Wellston 20-10 in the fourth period en route to a 45-31 Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division boys basketball victory.
The contest marked the second of the season for both teams, and the TVC-Ohio opener for both, which finished 2-10 in the division last season.
They split with each other on back-to-back nights last season over Valentine’s Day weekend.
There wasn’t exactly love on the floor Friday night, either.
With a football-like 13-13 halftime score, the second half of action resembled that of a football game itself, with rough, rugged and physical play by both clubs.
Wellston was whistled for a pair of technical fouls, both teams went over the double-bonus foul limit, and the defenses did their jobs with Wellston making 12 total field goals and Nelsonville-York 13.
“Our kids did show composure, and I think that’s important in these types of games (low scoring, physical, defensive-oriented games). It was rough, and I don’t mean just rough with the banging underneath. I’m talking about the rough play as far as neither team could really get anything together,†said Nelsonville-York coach Jay Kline. “The team that really kept their composure as far as not getting frustrated at their poor play was the team that was going to be better off.â€
Goodin’s three-point goal for the visiting Buckeyes was just the offensive spark Nelsonville-York needed.
After Austin Osborne — with 1:18 remaining in the third period — pulled Wellston to within one on a three-ball from the right wing (22-21), the Rockets rebounded a Buckeye miss and went for their first lead since 13-10 midway through the second stanza.
But Osborne was whistled for stepping out of bounds near midcourt, turning the ball back over to the Buckeyes with half-a-second remaining.
Enough time for a catch-and-shoot situation, the set worked to perfection for Nelsonville-York.
Daniel Kline inbounded the ball, and Goodin grabbed the leather, set his feet square and drained a three-pointer to beat the buzzer.
“We ran that set perfectly. It was really one of the only sets we ran well all night,†said Jay Kline. “Tyler Goodin hit a big three to take the lead from one to four, and it made us feel more comfortable going into the fourth.â€
In the fourth, the Buckeyes built upon that clutch shot, and scored three straight baskets in a minute and three seconds to stake a double-digit lead for the first time.
Jared Dexter scored off a Mychal Mitchell assist, Mitchell scored himself, and Dillon Stalling scored on a old-fashioned three-point play for a 32-21 advantage.
Wellston coach Jim Derrow described the sudden change in momentum as a result of Goodin’s good one.
“That was a big shot by them and a bad play on our part,†he said. “It seemed like every situation that could have turned momentum went the other way. If Austin (Osborne) doesn’t step out of bounds there, we get the last shot, which we talk all the time about getting the last shots of quarters. We have to be stronger with the ball.â€
The Rockets received baskets within 55 seconds of each other from sophomore posts Jaylen Prater and Grant Thompson, closing the gap to 32-25 and 34-27 with 3:50 remaining.
But the Buckeyes began their parade to the free-throw line, converting 10-of-17 in the stanza to eventually lead by 14 three times.
Nelsonville-York’s largest lead was indeed 14 — at 41-27 with two minutes remaining, 43-29 just 55 seconds later, and 45-31 for the final score.
Coach Kline said he decided to deviate from set plays with the fourth-quarter cushion.
“We said we’re going away from sets,†he said. “We hadn’t executed but one all night, and it looked like we were handcuffing our kids, so let’s just go out and play basketball. I turned them loose to just run a general motion, pick when you feel like it, pick away, drive, dribble-drive and it seemed to open a lot of things up for us.â€
While things opened up for the Buckeyes, they closed down for the Rockets.
Wellston was outscored 32-18 in the second half, and endured a pair of epic scoring droughts over the final three periods.
Thompson tallied for a 13-10 Rocket lead at the 4:20 mark of the second, which was their last lead of the night.
Wellston’s next points came exactly three-and-a-half minutes into the third frame, when Austin Craig came up with a steal and scored for a 17-15 deficit.
Wellston would forge a 17-17 tie, and a 22-21 deficit when Osborne sank his triple, but that would be as close as the Rockets would get.
The Buckeyes locked the Rockets down to just 30-percent shooting (12-of-40 overall), including just 2-of-10 from three-point range.
Wellston senior Jeff Matteson, who led the Rockets with 16 points in the season-opening win over Glenwood, went 1-of-9 from the field and didn’t score until only 1:40 remained.
“We didn’t knock down shots against their zone and we weren’t effective as far as our interior play,†said Derrow. “Give Nelsonville-York some credit, though. They had some wrinkles in their half-court defense which gave us some problems.â€
A frustrated Matteson — despite his game-high seven rebounds — was saddled with foul trouble as well, and picked up a technical fall in the third before fouling out in the final few seconds.
His senior teammate Cody Wilkett was held to 0-of-7 from the field.
“Our defense was great all night,†said Kline. “We wanted to pack it in and make them shoot over the top. Our post players did a great job of neutralizing Jaylen Prater quite a bit. Matteson was frustrated early, and that continued to build on him. He’s a four-year starter for them, and if you get him frustrated, that’s going to take a lot away from their offense.â€
The 10 points in the fourth period was Wellston’s highest offensive output of the entire evening, as the Blue and Gold also committed 22 turnovers, many of which were unforced.
“We played really good defense, and I thought our defense was good enough to win tonight,†said Derrow. “We know this is a work in progress, and 13 points at halftime sums up the whole situation. Both teams, offensively, set basketball back a few years at that point. We have so many things to correct, and we know that. We’re just trying to improve and we’re going to improve.â€
Wellston was also hindered by its free-throw shooting, making just 5-of-16.
No Rocket registered double figures, as Prater on four field goals and Thompson on two field goals and 4-of-7 free throws tallied eight points apiece.
Osborne added five, as Ryan Darnell drained a deuce and a trey in the first frame.
Mitchell mustered a game-high dozen for Nelsonville-York on four field goals and 4-of-4 free throws.
Bunting added 11 on three field goals and 5-of-6 freebies.
Nelsonville-York knocked down 17-of-25 at the line overall, including its first six and 9-of-10 through the first three frames.
“Without those free throws, we don’t win the ballgame either,†said Kline.
The Buckeyes shot 35-percent from the field (13-of-37), and 44-percent from inside the arc (11-of-25), as Goodin and Jared Dexter added six points apiece while Dexter and Bunting boasted six boards.
Mitchell dished out five assists.
The Buckeyes led 10-7 after the back-and-forth first quarter, before Wellston scored its six straight in the second on baskets by Osborne and Thompson sandwiched around two Thompson free throws.
Nelsonville-York’s Casey Cox canned a trifecta for the 13-13 tie with 3:25 to play.
Then, almost two minutes into the third period, Mitchell made the first pair of technical free throws and Nelsonville-York never trailed again.
“It’s a great win on the road in the league in a tough place to play,†said Kline. “We’re trying to take it one step at a time, and winning on the road at Wellston is big for us. I’m pretty proud of my kids.â€
Nelsonville-York, which is now 2-0, returns to the road tonight against non-league Crooksville.
The Buckeyes open their home slate on Tuesday night against Alexander, which was a 49-36 TVC-Ohio winner over Meigs on Friday.
Wellston is back in TVC-Ohio action on Tuesday as well, and in Athens County, at Athens.

cowboyB1982....It wasn't an "easy" game for Nelsonville-York. It was a hard-fought game by both teams.
Also, notice how I spelled "Nelsonville" correctly, used proper capitalization, and also said "Nelsonville-York" not "nellsonville"
And you are a Bucks fan?

No, actually I'm a Wellston fan but they are horrible this year
