Re: Chesapeake Beasts of the Southeast Tournament---Jan. 16th
... just rolled into Logan after spending the day/evening in Chesapeake ... let me say up front - the Chesapeake folks are fantastic hosts , the Invitational was outstanding ... I have never been treated so well anywhere - Coach Davis and his staff made sure that "old pfloyd" had all the comforts of home - tourney t-shirt, escorted to the hospitality room for some great food - you name it IT was in there to eat fried chicken, mashed potatoes, 4 or five main dishes , all the sides and desserts you could ever want ... thank you Coach Davis and all the fine people at Chesapeake HS - wow I am truly humbled ... as fans we were treated to a great tribute to tourney creator Joe Smith (who passed away in August) written by Coach Davis before the final contest of the evening, throw in the cheerleading routine by the group of young people with special needs - outstanding ... and then there were a few basketball games to watch as well lol ... I got my first in person look at South Point this season - the Pointers are a very good ball club ... inside strength with Prater/ Cody Taylor and Kyle Winkler ... good perimeter play from Blake Barnes, Tevin Mitchell, Winkler off the bench - I look forward to seeing SP again next Saturday as both the Pointers and I will be on the road to Peebles for what will be a great game imo ... in the 2nd contest I got my first looks at both North Adams and Southern ... I know I've been questioned as to why I keep NA on my lists - the Green Devils were 1-9 coming into todays contest - imo those who question have never seen Coach Young's teams play ... NA may not have the horses that they have had in the past BUT when you watch the devils play YOU see a very well coached team - they play the game of basketball the way it should be played ... ball movement, spacing, varied defensive sets, the guards penetrate and kick the ball out, good passing form - crisp, firm passes ( when I see a team play I can tell a lot about the program just watching the team pass the ball, passing shows whether the coach emphasizes solid fundamentals imo) ... no standout player BUT a group of very good, fundamentally sound kids that KNOW the game ... nice job Coach Young (I'll definitely wear my North Adams t-shirt as well, thank you) ... Huntington Prep vs Quality Education Academy - either one of these teams are bigger than most college teams ... I saw more dunks in warm ups than I have seen in all of my years watching high school ball in Southern Ohio combined lol ... as far as the game? I enjoyed the ball played in all 3 of the other games more... the coaching was better, the all around fundamental play of ANY of the other 6 teams tonight was better imo ... that takes us to Coach Davis's boys and the Peake ... I had the pleasure of watching the Panthers early in the season vs Wheelersburg, then again at the Convo in the loss to Waverly ... wanted to see how far Coach Davis's TEAM had come at the halfway point - I was impressed , the Purple and White have made some positive strides imo - the guard play is better - Hintz "squared" ( Peter/Patrick) along with Colton Lindsey are very solid now ... the biggest change has Colin Kennedy in the starting lineup - Kennedy / Saunders /McMaster/Copley/ Hintz - an outstanding starting group - Kennedy/Saunders/Copley hit the boards as hard as anyone ... Copley/McMaster are solid three point threats ... the Peake seems to be playing more "in your face" defensively as well ... at the half way point I give the Peake an "A-" grade with the "-" coming from the Free Throw LIne ... going to have to be better than 33% from the FT line IF CHS is going to go deep in the one and done season - I'm sure the FT situation will be taken care of by the time the post season rolls around , Coach Davis will see to that LOL ... as I've posted many times before since Coach Davis took over the CHS program - he IS DOING AN OUTSTANDING JOB ... he knows the game, and teaches the game - heck during the route that was on tonight (45-15 when I left for my 2 1/2 hour drive back to Logan) he was still coaching court side every time a player came off the court ... okay enough babbling on my part BUT I wanted to get a post in about the Beasts of the Southeast Tourney ... enjoyed the hoops, enjoyed the folks on the river, the Pfloyd Tour will make it an annual stop for sure ...

Re: Chesapeake Beasts of the Southeast Tournament---Jan. 16th
I had a great time at this tourny.
I think the move by coach Davis to get Kennedy in the starting lineup is a very good one. Kennedy gives them another dimension that they lack when he is not in. The gaurd play is better and it seems like the players are starting to know their roles and are not trying to do too much.
I do offer a critic. Your showcase should be the most exciting game of the night. Probably should have had Huntington Prep in the showcase, or Chesapeake should play better a better team. Huntington Ross bless their little hearts are just not very good.

Eastern Brown really disappointed me...i thought the SP EB game wouldve been much more competitive...Either the pointers are just a very good ball team or eastern brown is just over rated..any opinions?

sp is a good team they play very good team ball getting everyone involved not taking anything from eastern brown there a decent team the game was alot closer then what the score board showed sp had alot of turnovers that slowed them down as far a praters game I think he did well his presence is always known underneath an he has added some range to his game with the 3 ball I see the pointers finishing the season near the top an making a good post season push
Re: Chesapeake Beasts of the Southeast Tournament---Jan. 16th
... avalanche ... I thought the move to have Chesapeake the last game of the night and not the "unknown Huntington Prep vs the other giants of the midway" was a great one myself ... kept the fans IN THE STANDS all night ... IF the peake had played in the 3rd game many many fans would have left after that game imo ... having the peake in the night cap put fans in the stands for BOTH games jmo ...
... the tourney imo had a great initial opening ... next year will even better ... I am very impressed with what the money is being used for - $1000 scholarships for EACH of the graduating senior players each year who go on to college ! wow talk about giving "forward" - again pfloyd is totally impressed with how the tourney was started, how it is run and why it is taking place ... I have a feeling that "Joe Smith" and the hard work that he did to get this off the ground would be very pleased - and the good fans along the river will forever keep him and his hard work alive for many years to come ...

If you don't know who Huntington Prep is in the tri-state then you have been living under a rock. We can agree to disagree. Most showcase games feature the best two teams of the night, that has been my experience anyway. Most fans who were not Chesapeake fans were gone by halftime of the Chesapeake game anyways.
Re: Chesapeake Beasts of the Southeast Tournament---Jan. 16th
... for the record - I really didn't care for either of the 2 marquis teams - they are what they are tall, athletic and quick BUT as far as better basketball? wasn't impressed ... neither coach "coached" , both are one on one , my athleticism vs your athleticism , throw up to the rim and let my guy out jump your guy type of hoops ... those kids have few fundamental skills - no wonder when they go off to a college (for their 2 years) they have to learn to play "the game" of basketball from the ground up ... my money was more well spent watching the TEAMs/ fundamentally sound basketball that Coach Young, Coach Davis, Coach Caldwell, Coach Barnes, Coach Uhrig, Coach Beuchler do with their respective teams ... now you take either Huntington Prep or the Quality Ed players put them under Coach Davis/Coach Young THEN you would have a couple of OUTSTANDING basketball TEAMS imo ... by the way it is dark under my rock BUT the people like me here LOL ...

I was very pleased with the tournament atmosphere--especially for a first year event. I was not real impressed with the Prep vs. QE match up. Not much in terms of strategy and skill unless you count the pregame dunks which were more interesting than the game itself. Kind of struck me as a pick up game. I was more impressed with the team play of the other match ups as well even though the games weren't that close. I think there has been some inconsistency throughout the season with some of the teams, so what might have seemed like a good match up when this tournament was being set up a year ago just didn't pan out last night (that happens). Still made for some good ball. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I agree that having the host team play last made more sense. Keep the locals around all day!

no need to bless our hearts, we were outplayed and i believe it was 4? was money from the outside...and CHS deserved to win.......but that might be the worst homer job i have ever seen in my life. Did those guys graduate from CHS? Or were thier sons playing? best 3 out of 5? With out parents officiating? different story. congrats to CHS on a nice win.
Re: Chesapeake Beasts of the Southeast Tournament---Jan. 16th
Congratulations to Chesapeake on a nice tourny. Its great to see the Southeast becoming a hotbed for basketball after being such a football area for a long time. it would be great to see one of the turf schools do something like this for football. Alot of good football to be played. Again, good job in bringing a good tournament to Southern Ohio
Re: Chesapeake Beasts of the Southeast Tournament---Jan. 16th
Pfloyd, the final was 79-43. The bench was cleared early in the 4th qtr. Copley finished with 22, McMaster had 19, and Kennedy had 16. McMaster was player of the game. Must have been the 5 or 6 blocked shots added to his points. Either way, they all played great and filled their role to a T. And I agree with everything you had to say. I would much rather watch one of the fundamental and well coached teams play than a team of 7 foot all stars. You can tell by watching pregame warmups all they can do is dunk. Thus the low score. Hard for a 7 footer to dunk on another 7 footer. If you cant hit a J you cant score very many. Congrats to Coach Davis. Cant wait to see who plays next year. Thinking maybe the Lakers and the Celtics would be a good game to throw in there.
Re: Chesapeake Beasts of the Southeast Tournament---Jan. 16th
... thanks ovc fan ... I didn't stay for the entire game , the 45-15 half time lead let me hit the road a little sooner for my 2 and half hour drive back to the Hocking Hills ... it WAS a great tournament - thoroughly enjoyed the hoops and the friendly folks in Chesapeake ... tell you what IF Coach Davis gets the Lakers and the Celtics on the menu I BET he moves THAT one to the highlight game for the day LOL ...

I agree with pfloyd, I wasn't impressed with the marquis teams either, other then the warm up dunking show. Now I was very impressed with the way Chesapeake played, I also thought South Point played well. I wasn't impressed with the way the Southern Tornadoes played either, I hope you get a chance to see them play again pfloyd because they usually play alot better then that. Hopefully they will come out of their losing streak like Chesapeake did.
Re: Chesapeake Beasts of the Southeast Tournament---Jan. 16th
bengalsfan...i was an impartial fan. I saw maybe 2 or 3 calls go Peakes way but nothing too blatant. I dont think that would make up the difference in a game that could have easily been a 50 point blowout. That best 3 of 5 series would only last 3 games. The size and talent level just isnt there. I hate to say bad things about anybody but if the coach would have spent more time coaching instead of complaining about every call maybe he could have stopped the bleeding a little but doubt it.
Re: Chesapeake Beasts of the Southeast Tournament---Jan. 16th
Congrats to Coach Ryan Davis. The event was very well done. Alot of time and effort. North Adams enjoyed being a part of this 1st year event. To be on the same floor with Tommy Hardy made it worth the 2 hour bus trip.

Re: Chesapeake Beasts of the Southeast Tournament---Jan. 16th
bengalsfan!!! I will have to dissagree with you on the reffs.,if they were calling for huntington, then why did the kennedy player foul out?He was saddled with one foul that someone else committed and another phantom foul that just should not ever be called in a game. Also, they missed the goal tending on Kennedy. Anyone with eyes could have seen that the ball was not on its way down, the shooter was shooting a bank shot.
