No other rivalry in the Southeast District can come close to matching those numbers.

trojandave, no one would dispute those numbers, but what is the head to head matchups with these two programs? I am curious as to that history of these two programs?

Parkersburg - Marietta used to be a very big rivalry in the 70's and 80's when they played each other every year, but they got separated in divisions so it kind of died off, but now that they're going to play each other yearly, it should heat up again. You could even see some bad blood in this year's football game.

Waterford vs. Fort Frye the past 15 years. In 99 they split the series and Fort Frye went to the final 4 and Waterford was a sweet 16 team that year. Fort Frye won 100-28 in 02 and Waterford turns around in two years and wins 4 in a row. Tyler Engle's senior year, Fort Frye was held to 20 points at Cooper Annex and Engle is the all time leader in 3's in the state of Ohio. Last year's series at Fort Frye went into overtime with a buzzer beater from Brandt Thieman. At Waterford, Waterford was up 9 with a minute left and Fort Frye cuts it down to 2 with 4 seconds left as they fall just short and Wildcat student section storms the floor. 07 at Fort Frye Derek Hoge hits a 3 with 2 seconds left to go up 1 and Tyler Engle has a half court shot that rims out. 06 at Waterford went too triple OT and Waterford pulled out the close win. This series is always a fun one because the schools are only a mile apart and everyone knows each other. But before the mid 90's the series was all Fort Frye.

Agreed, you cant get much better a rivalry than NA/Peebles. These two schools has never liked each other.

Peebles and North Adams is a very good rivalry. The players that both schools have produced is incredible.

I also think that an underrated one is Fairfield/Whiteoak.
Yeah both schools havent had the players produced like Peebles and NA, but this is also a pure hatred one too, baseball also.

The Piketon/Waverly dislike began in the 1850's over the county seat. Piketon held it, but Waverly wanted it. James Emmitt, a millionaire believed that Waverly would prosper, especially all of his holdings if the canal and the county seat were in Waverly. The Courthouse in Piketon burned, and even with proof of voter fraud, Waverly won the vote. They are seperated by only 3 miles and a river. People in both villages, yes both Waverly is below the 5,000 people count so I wont call them a city anymore, will tell you that no matter what sport, both teams dont want to lose to the other.

They have played basketball 113 times, with 27 years of not playing between 1970 and 1997. The ohsaa put in the tourney format in 1922, and the have played before that. This rivalry isnt just about sports, but about 2 communities who just dont like each other on so many levels.

I still joke around with guys from Waverly, but we also discuss this same topic.

That's when an employee of the Portsmouth Railroad Company, John Geddes Peebles and his partner, Thaddeus Seaman, marked out the location where the new railroad and Highway 41 would intersect. The town growing around this spot would later be named after Peebles, much to the chagrin of Thaddeus Seaman.

Eight years later Thaddeus and his junior assistant, Juniper D. Young, began their own way station on the railroad 8 miles away. The two towns competed for commerce, with Peebles, hosting the Chautauqua speaking events (where speakers such as William Jennings Bryant would visit) and Seaman hosting the longest running street fair in Ohio.

This continued on for many years until...

The rivalry intensified after Geddes led a raiding party to Seaman, stealing Thaddues and Young's shoes while they slept and putting their hands in warm water. The Seamanites retaliated by burning 1/3 of Peebles to the ground.

Posses were formed. On third day after the attack, war parties rode their ponies and fought the Great Battle of Lawshe. Midway through the battle a round rock was thrown through a hoop attached the side of a barn. The locals stopped, transfixed. The fighting stopped as everyone picked up a rock and threw it through the small hoop.

Thus, the bloodshed ended and the Peebles/North Adams rivalry began to take the shape it knows today.

The biggest rivalry? Rural vs. City in the tournament. It must leave a bad taste in them big city fellers mouths when a town of 800 sends a team to state and beats a Columbus school.

Agreed, Peebles might have had a banner of their own if we didnt have to play Big 10 expansion team Cols. Wehrle. 5 or 6 of the players on their team would go onto play "big" college basketball(2 went to Ohio State). To only lose to a team like that by 10 was a pretty impressive feat in itself. Was Lawrence Funderburke a freshman on that Wehrle team? If so add a NBA player to that list.
