I know Travis Hale personally and I believe he has no desire to be a varsity head coach. Especially one in a football school, one where the support is indifferent, and one in the traveling SEOAL. Just my opinion, but I think I am right on this one.

Might want to add NJ Kight to the list of possible candidates.

Howard is the man for the job. Probably would need some serious arm twisting, but would be well worth it.

Larry Jordan is an excellent coach. I hope he coaches again. Phil Howard would be a great choice as he is also an excellent coach but can he do it and be superintendent at the same time? Does Jackson have any rules on this? Some school districts have such rules, others don't.

From what I hear I don't think Howard would do it although he would be a good choice. Need someone who will stay a while and build the program and he just bought a house and moved into town after getting a new 5 year contract as super. I know at least 2 board members that would love to have him coach but I doubt he would want to do it right now.

Are you kidding!!!!! Phil Howard can barely run the school with out problems from his teachers. Jay Martin gone, Larry Jordan gone, Kendra Hall gone, trying hard for some reason to get rid of baseball coach??? How are the kids supposed to feel when they have no idea who is going to be around. Why do you think Ondera and many others have transfered and numbers are always down in every sport!! Too many buddies in the administrative positions making to much money and the ones who suffer the most the KIDS!!!

Most success in schools and on the field are with longevity. Until Jackson gets that you will always be talking about the what IF in every aspect of STUDENT-ATHLETE

Howard wasn't even there when Ondera and Borden left. As far as getting rid of baseball coach can't believe that cause if he wanted that all he would have to do is not recommend him for the job - we saw that with the girls coach a few years ago and the previous supt.. You are right about one thing though - longevity is key to success. That is why I said he would be a good choice cause he is going to be here for 5 more years or I doubt he would have moved here. There is no guarantee that no matter who is hired that they will stay for any length of time.
No need to sweat it crazy legs. From what I hear he has less than zero interest in doing it himself. As far as problems with teachers or staff, I would say any organization that employs 2 -3 hundred people has a few disgruntled ones.

Say what you want but the kids that transfer do it to be on a better team majority of the time or because they think they'll get more playing time. I will agree that Jackson has some issues but most great coaches have solid players to work with. You can't pick up a sport the day it starts and then bury it in the closet as soon as the banquet is over. Most student athletes have the desire to win but not the heart. When a team struggles, the parents always blame the coach yet how much time do they spend working with their kid in the offseason to help them get better??? Alot of these kids don't respect their coaches or teachers and that lesson should start at home. Jackson needs to right the ship and that starts with the right attitude.....

hawkeye.....I agree.....I just thought maybe the thought crossed his mind

I know him as well.

As far as NJ Kight......his brother has more experience, but does already have a head coaching job

Mike Stevens come home?

Of course Howard has the impressive basketball coaching resume.......but he may not want any part of doing both jobs.....though I wouldn't have any problem with it.

From what I'm hearing about the whole thing, this was kinda a mutual parting of the ways. Larry is a great high school coach, period! No one really can present an argument that this guy doesn't understand the game of basketball on this level. Just look at his record.

There were several underlying issues on this decision both ways. Some of the stories about Larry's deer hunting issues were over exaggerated......but he really did hit a nice, big buck that day. Conversely, Jackson's rule about "no school, no practice" is pathetic. Jackson needs to figure out if they really want to support a basketball program or if they just wanna continue to promote their football tradition.

I've heard Mr. Kight and Mr. Howard are gonna go after some big names with their search. Heard from a pretty good source that Matt Combs, Jim Derrow, and Travis Robertson are at the top of their list.

Should be interesting.

I can't fathom Jim Derrow being one of the candidates.

thanks ;-)

I don't believe Howard can coach and be the super at the same time. It goes along with the other rule no school no practice. A Jackson rule only.

Would like to see combs get the job.

Talked to a board member today about this. No policy against administrators coaching. This has been a practice and not a board policy. Was told Howard could probably do it if he wanted and would probably have enough votes from the board ( maybe not 5-0 but the majority anyway) but apparently he has zero interest in doing it. Also the no school no practice issue is not a policy. In fact, both teams practiced some days when there was no school and was not allowed to practice on some other days because of the weather. It is a Supt or his designee decision that is apparently made depending on how bad the conditions are. I know they even played a couple of games on days that school was not in session.
Combs would be a slam dunk but he is not leaving the TVC to coach in the SEOAL! Heck, this year Jackson beat them on their court and look at the difference in their final records. I would also be willing to bet anything that Derrow would not even be considered! Travis Hale might be a good candidate if he is interested. Let's face it folks no experienced coach is going to be coming to Jackson unless they are in trouble where they are at and just want to keep coaching. The best we can hope for is a young guy with a lot of enthusiasm and then he will probably leave after getting some head coaching experience. The only reason Jordan ended up here is because he was out of a job. That is why I said Howard would be a good choice. He has experience and appears to be wanting to stay here for a while, but he has to want to do it and the board has to be in favor of it.

Have they had the boys and girls banquet yet? If not, that should be interesting. What exactly is a support group? I agree, they will have a hard time getting anyone with varsity experience to apply for the job.

I know the jv vc team was undefeated this year but why would Travis Hale be interested in a varsity job. I heard he lives in Jackson??
He has been a assistant at VC for awhile hasn't he??
What other candidates are there??
