Matt was a senior QB on the 89 state champion football team. That would make him a 1990 grad. Burg_Grad_77 forgot Brad Walk.Ironman92 wrote:didn't Matt Miller graduate with Ellis in 1992?

Ironman92 wrote:Jackson Ironmen
Ed Spriggs early 60's 1st all state 1850ish points SEOAL POY
Harold Howe late 60's 1st team all state SEOAL POY played at Urbana
Allen Collins early 80's 1,000+ points (only 4 in JHS history)
Pat Stevens mid 80's went on to play and score over 1,000 pts at Wilmington College....knee injury kept him from over 1,000 in high school
Greg Harris late 80's 1st team all-state around 23.5 ppg as a sr
Willie Woodard early 90's SEOAL POY, led team to only SEOAL title since the late 60's...played at Lewis St (D2 near Chicago and Capital)
Matt Walburn early 90's co-starred with Woodard on the SEOAL title team and eclipsed over 1,000 career points
Brad Howe mid 90's 1600+ points 1st team all-state at least once.....went on to become Capital's all-time leader in 3 pointers for a while and scored over 1500 pts at Capital....SEOAL POY
Max Morrow mid 2000's 900+ points and led one of Jackson's best teams 17-3 in a near upset over the highly touted Logan Elm Braves in the sectional
Reid Arnold mid 2000's illness kept him from 1,000 career points.....played many minutes as a frosh
Dylan Newsome current is very near 1,000 points and is inch for inch one of the best players Jackson has ever had
Should've beens:
Jon McDonald....started many games as a frosh and would've definately been over 1,000 pts...transferred to Wellston after his soph year
Shane Wolford....started games as a freshman and then missed season time with late playoff runs in football and with conditioning and not playing his jr or sr year for 1/2 of the year
Kyle Ondera....contributed as a frosh very well against monster teams at the time lke Zanesville and Chillicothe.....transferred to Oak Hill...won state championship, final 4 MVP and eclipsed 1,000 points
Ryan Borden.....all-seoal as a soph scoring 18 ppg and then transferred to Oak Hill.......hit the 2 biggest shots in Jackson Co history in state championship game to sent into OT and double OT
Patrick Dill....was scoring 18 ppg with the Ironmen and going to be all-seoal....but quit team very late and moved to Pennsylvania
OTHERS: post 1983
Vince Jenkins, Vince Wolford, Jeff Coffey, Clayton Valentine, Ryan Bethel, Jared Humphreys, Morgan Dobbins
Shane Shanton??????? I don't have stats or anything but he was a force in the mid nineties. He's gotta be on that list somewhere. I think he was a grade behind Brad Howe. Anybody for sure?
Re: Best basketball players in your school history
grant was from gtown and they are in the southwest district. i saw grant play a few times in high school and i was not that impressed with him. as a junior he either quit or got kicked off the team. he really got better when he got to xavier. xavier has always done a great job developing big men.
Re: Best basketball players in your school history
There has been a lot of tremendous players throughout the years at Alexander but none as good as RICK WHITE.

Didn't he wind up growing a good bit between his senior season and his arrival at Xavier? Seems like he was only in the 6'3" to 6'5" range in high school and wound up around 6'9" when he got to college.

1. Ty Barnes
2. Dennis Gagai
Ty is in his late 30's and Dennis still can't play with him.

The Matt Miller I'm refering to graduated in 1990 and led the Burg to the State Title in football 1989 and to the Final 4 in basketball in 1990. There has been more than one Matt Miller at the Burg over the years.
Buckwheat, I can't believe I forgot Brad Walke. He was probably the best guard, and arguably the best basketball player to ever come out of the Burg, but he decided to not play in college for personal reasons. I played pickup games with him for years at the grade school after he graduated and when he turned it on he was unstoppable.
Re: Best basketball players in your school history
Shane Shanton could be on my list somewhere as well. At 6'7 he was a solid player. Graduated in 1997...went to a D2 school in WV and eventually played JV I think at Rio for a year or so. Had the best dunk in JHS Alumni Tourney history.

I played against him in High School in 1990 and he was listed at 6'7. His freshmen year at X he was listed at 6'8. He didnt play as a Junior (unknown reason) but did play as a Sophmore on Jv. His Sophmore year he was listed at 6'3 but I can remember his feet were so big that he flopped around like a clown.

As a freshman in 1988 I remember playing aginst a 6'8 black kid from Ironton. Not sure what his name was but he was a force and probably had a lot of major college looks.

Shane went on to play 1 season at WV Wesleyan (8th or 9th man) before transferring and playing one season at Rio where he played off the bench. I believe he lost interest in playing the game competitively.
3yr starter at Jackson. 800+ pts and 400+ rebounds. Had a few nice dunks while in HS also. Not just in the open floor. Saw him take a post feed in the half court offense, drop step and dunk. I also remember Shane trailing on a fast break, taking a pass off the backboard and putting it down. Although he didn't do it often was capable of shooting the 3pt shot.

Remember a player from Ironton playing at Rio back in mid to late 70's.... Not certain of name but I think Dean Fitzpatrick???? Would he make the list as one of Ironton's best?
Re: Best basketball players in your school history
East HS...Mike Yeagle back in the late 60's or so and went on to play at Marshall.

Re: Best basketball players in your school history
Jeep Madness......I would put Evan Keslar on that list for the Jeeps!
85inside....I'm disappointed in your choices...I for sure thought you would've included me on that list for Ironton! Just kidding...Those are two great choices...Ty Barnes my all time choice.
some others I played with were.....
Joe Leith
Ty Davis--greatest dunker I've ever seen at Ironton...Saw him completely leap over a Raceland player once...Talk about it to this day to my players! He and Gino Ford battled in the Regionals my sophmore year! If he'd had the grades, he'd been at a D-1 school I believe.
This is a team (not a player)...but I have to say my 94 Final Four Teammates....1st boy's team in Ironton school history to reach state tournament...broke the barriers for the "football" school! That year we beat Lakeland, Florida and Auburndale, Florida, 3rd and 5th largest schools in Florida! Maybe not the best basketball players, not the best record, but played extremely hard and had a lot of pride! I miss those days!
I think the player mentioned above from the '88 time-frame was Doug Birchfield...He was around 7 ft tall; he could play...think he ended up in trouble and never got beyond the high school court. I may be wrong, but I think that was the case.
I too have heard the greatest player in I-town history was Snead.
