Re: Best basketball players in your school history
It would take a lot of space to name the great players of the Portsmouth Trojans, but I will give my top 5 all time:
1. Larry Hisle.......1965........first team All-American, recruited by John Wooden at UCLA, but instead chose to play major league baseball and had a fine career. Averaged 25.5 PPG his senior year.
2. Mike Haley.......1961........led the Trojans to 61 state title, was state tourney MVP, later had a fine career at Ohio University and was elected to OU's Hall of Fame. Coached 4 state title teams at Dayton Dunbar and Roth.
3. Jeff Lisath.......1978........led the Trojans to 78 state title, was state tourney MVP, later had a fine career at Miami of Ohio, and is currently head coach at Piketon. Averaged 21.2 PPG his senior year.
4. Craig Tubbs......1979........was a starter on 78 state title team, averaged 24.5 PPG his senior year, led Trojans to a #1 ranking with an 18-0 mark, all time leading scorer in PHS history with 1,485 points. Craig played with Jeff Lisath at Miami of Ohio.
5. Patrick Tubbs....1988........was the starting point guard on the 88 state title team, led the Trojans in scoring 3 straight years, went on to a fine career at Morehead State.
The list could go on and on, and currently we have a young man who is averaging 25 PPG.......Tory Horne........right now I would put him top 10 all time in PHS history......and there are some colleges showing interest in Tory.

1. Dennis Gagai
2. Ty Barnes
I would give the slight edge to Gagai.
He is also one heck of a defender.
Ty can still get it done.
Re: Best basketball players in your school history
Rick Fulton played in late 60's gratuated in 1970 i think scored over 1200 points not sure of actual total. Great all round athlete. Was a starter on the 68 baseball team that went to state.

What Colleges are looking at him?

Jerry Jackson, Corning (now part of Miller School District). He, along with Charlie Gill also of Corning, took Ohio University to the NCAA Elite 8 Championship Game in 1964, losing to (Michigan ?). Gill also coached at Amesberne (Amesville) in the 60's.
Next best player in my area would be Rick White, Alexander 1974.

In no particular order, the Top 5.

What a team that would have been.
These were also great players.
Josh Patterson
Jay Palmer
Mark Saunders
Dennis Gregory
Harold Caudill
Jason Caudill
Brian Dixon
Jerrod Albright
Keith Prater
Jake Prater
Decent list, but I would have added Ben Batey, Ryan Stewart, Andrew Eberts.

Ed Spriggs early 60's 1st all state 1850ish points SEOAL POY
Harold Howe late 60's 1st team all state SEOAL POY played at Urbana
Allen Collins early 80's 1,000+ points (only 4 in JHS history)
Pat Stevens mid 80's went on to play and score over 1,000 pts at Wilmington College....knee injury kept him from over 1,000 in high school
Greg Harris late 80's 1st team all-state around 23.5 ppg as a sr
Willie Woodard early 90's SEOAL POY, led team to only SEOAL title since the late 60's...played at Lewis St (D2 near Chicago and Capital)
Matt Walburn early 90's co-starred with Woodard on the SEOAL title team and eclipsed over 1,000 career points
Brad Howe mid 90's 1600+ points 1st team all-state at least once.....went on to become Capital's all-time leader in 3 pointers for a while and scored over 1500 pts at Capital....SEOAL POY
Max Morrow mid 2000's 900+ points and led one of Jackson's best teams 17-3 in a near upset over the highly touted Logan Elm Braves in the sectional
Reid Arnold mid 2000's illness kept him from 1,000 career points.....played many minutes as a frosh
Dylan Newsome current is very near 1,000 points and is inch for inch one of the best players Jackson has ever had
Should've beens:
Jon McDonald....started many games as a frosh and would've definately been over 1,000 pts...transferred to Wellston after his soph year
Shane Wolford....started games as a freshman and then missed season time with late playoff runs in football and with conditioning and not playing his jr or sr year for 1/2 of the year
Kyle Ondera....contributed as a frosh very well against monster teams at the time lke Zanesville and Chillicothe.....transferred to Oak Hill...won state championship, final 4 MVP and eclipsed 1,000 points
Ryan Borden.....all-seoal as a soph scoring 18 ppg and then transferred to Oak Hill.......hit the 2 biggest shots in Jackson Co history in state championship game to sent into OT and double OT
Patrick Dill....was scoring 18 ppg with the Ironmen and going to be all-seoal....but quit team very late and moved to Pennsylvania
OTHERS: post 1983
Vince Jenkins, Vince Wolford, Jeff Coffey, Clayton Valentine, Ryan Bethel, Jared Humphreys, Morgan Dobbins
I watched Ed Spriggs a few times in high school --big boy--his senior year Jackson had a ton of heigth--I think Ed was 6-8 and Thomas was 6-7 and the rest went 6-5-6-3-6-2 for starters.
Ed even played end on the football team
Are you sure Spriggs played on the FBall team ( I dont think so) but Brett (or Brent Thomas did) and I think went to UC Ed had a full ride to U of Miami (Fl) and didnt go. At the time Spriggs was the best Big Man to ever play in this area but he couldnt play with the likes of some of the big men of this day and age Its just a different brand of ball. I once asked Spriggs what his greatest thrill in bball was and he told me it was when he got in Jr. High and his shirt and shorts matched.
I'm sure Ed played football--I'm sure I saw him playing against Logan at Logan his senior year.

Re: Best basketball players in your school history
I played on the JHS basketball teams for 4 years including when Eddi Spriggs played. I also played on the Ironman football teams 60 thru 64. Ed never played football on the JHS team. Someone once asked then basketball coach Dave Fisher what he thought about Spriggs palying football. Fisher is said to have opinee that all he could think of was those long legs being bent double on the gridiron and the effect that would have on the the near future of Ironman basketball. Lots of good memories including the trip to regionals at Ohio University where we lost to Portsmouth High and their stars Hiezell and Oliver.

Re: Best basketball players in your school history
Is Justice not going to get any love in the SHL. The kid is the all-time leading scorer, 24th in history of Ohio, 2nd in Career 3's, 3'rd for 3's in a game, im sure he made the list for 3's in a season as well. Had 50 one night, one of the if not most winningest player in Peebles history to date, Averaged close to 24 ppg in his career I believe and was also very unselfish. One of the few players to go Division 1 in the SHL. People talk about Mark being able to shoot from deep, i would take Justice in a contest vs. anyone I've seen. Not to take anything away from the players mentioned or Mark as seeing as how I had the opportunity to play against him and with him many times and he was great. I just find it hard to believe Justice's name hasn't been mentioned. Too Recent?

Is Justice going to get any love? The kid was a standout from the moment he first stepped on the floor. He is the All-time leading scorer in SHL history, the 24th most points in Ohio history, 2nd in Career 3's, 3rd in 3's in a game. Had 50 one game. Possibly the most winningest player in Peebles history. Mark was good for Peebles and i wont take anything away from his as i played with and against him several times. However, Justice is a better shooter and did this scoring against many trick defenses while being a very unselfish player. He is one of the few players to ever go Division 1 and led the Indians to being ranked top 10 in the State his junior and senior seasons. Loosing in Double overtime and Overtime on heartbreak shots.
Re: Best basketball players in your school history
Jeremy McCloud Western Pike around 1800 points led the Indians to the final 8 his senior year.
And Gabby Smith
And Gabby Smith
Re: Best basketball players in your school history
Western Pike-I would say Gabby Smith, he had great range, and did not have the 3 point line during his career. I would think that he would have been all over 2000 if he would have had the 3pt line.
