Re: Jackson 71 - Vinton County 68 (Final - OT) 2/20
I was at the table and heard the flesh on flesh contact. It was a foul, but that doesn't bother me as much as the technical. You do not do that, you warn a kid, if he already been warned, maybe, but in overtime in an emotional game like that? Man, I just don't know. The Christman kid for Jackson did the same thing when he fouled out early in the fourth and nothing was said and there should not have been anything said. It was an emotional game, wanted by both teams, wanted by both coaches, it was a very good game. I wish it would have been a victory for the Vikings.
But that is not what beat the Vikings, the first quarter beat the Vikings, you cannot spot teams like that 12 point margins. However, give the Vikings and Coach Combs credit for competing and not quitting, the Vikings almost gutted out a win. No time to worry about that, time to focus on Sheridan.
Good luck to the Ironmen.

Congrats on a nice win for the Ironmen!! Newsome had 33 points and 13 rebounds. Landrum had 17 points and 11 assists. Congrats to the Vikings for never giving up and fighting back when down by 10. Good luck to both teams in the tournament.

I don't know bulldog....quite honestly only 2-4 games this year were games of inconsistent play...many times it was playing a different lineup or missing practice everyday they missed school and those weekends.
Landrum was hotter than normal...but a couple of others didn't play as well as expected.
I believe the 6 that played the majority last night will give a pretty consistent result at this point of the season.

Probably 20 instances/calls could be argued each way...but definately in the mix of a huge decider was the play before the end of regualtion.
Jackson's obtains rebound with 9 seconds left (and 2 point lead).....heaves ball to Colt Chapman and he looks to go in for a dunk and a VC player gets back as he changes his stepping to get his height and Eric Landrum gets fould with 4 1/2 seconds left and misses 1 free throw....and then Thompson hits a 24 footer to send it to OT. A simple layup by Chapman and it's a 4 point game with 5 seconds left...ball game. Had we lost that game...whoa! But Colt did make two nice plays in OT to help the Ironmen win. He learned a very valuable lesson without costing his team.
Did Newsome have 30 or 33? Did Landrum have 22 or 17? I thought Landrum had about 17 but VC radio said he had 22

I beleive Dylan now has 983 points in his career
Re: Jackson 71 - Vinton County 68 (Final - OT) 2/20
Just curious, after Thompson made the 3 pt to get VC into OT how much did he get to play in OT?
I would hope he was in playing when Combs chose to put in 2 soph from JV team!

Re: Jackson 71 - Vinton County 68 (Final - OT) 2/20
Ryan Chesser came in for Grillo..who fouled out. Bobby Walton came in for Ethan Allen..he hurt his knee. Not sure if that comment is out of spite..but Chesser hit TWO huge threes in OT and Walton stole the ball and drew a foul while VC was down 3 with 20 seconds left...So BOTH of those Sophomores were KEY to giving VC a chance at winning.
Re: Jackson 71 - Vinton County 68 (Final - OT) 2/20
Yeah....the young guys did great for VC....I made a "why is this kid not on varisty all the time comment" and the best volleyball player in the district told me he was just a sophomore...I knew he was a soph...just impressed by every second of his play in crunch time and his play in the JV game.
Does he only play a couple of varsity qtrs every night due to his JV qtrs? The JV team had 3 very good players that I noticed.

Ryan probably averages 4 or 5 minutes a night on Varsity.

Thompson played almost all of the OT. Only one sophomore from the JV team was in. Hope that helps satisfy your curiosity.

Re: Jackson 71 - Vinton County 68 (Final - OT) 2/20
sittin the pine,
Prior to the start of this season, Dylan had a total of 344 points in 37 games he played in as a varsity player. To have 983 at this point, he would have had to average over 33 ppg. Didn't happen. Dylan is not a 1000 point scorer, but he is a great rebounder and has been a treat to watch when he gets the ball in close. He would be a nightmare to defend in my opinion.

Great game to watch. Thought the officiating steadily got worse as the game progressed culminating in a technical that was unnecessary. I give tons of credit to a Vinton County team that didn't give up! Good luck to both teams heading into tournaments!
Re: Jackson 71 - Vinton County 68 (Final - OT) 2/20
Didn't Dylan score 18 ppg+ last season? That is 360+ points and over 400 when you include the tourney games (2)
His soph year I don't believe he was in every game.....but had to have scored around 150 points or so.
550 estimate going into this year.......if the numbers on the other thread are correct I was only 8 points off with my complete guess....though I am pretty weird with numbers and such.

I think the Radio guys tonight said Newsome has just over 900 for his carrer...I cant remember the exact number but I think they said 918...Only the 6th Jackson player to reach 900 points...Congrats!
Re: Jackson 71 - Vinton County 68 (Final - OT) 2/20
Radio guys said he had 904 going into tonight, so if that's correct, he ended up with 914 for his career.
Great accomplishment for Dylan. He will be missed.

No problem, Dundas.
I wasn't sure what the real number was until tonight when Dan Morrow and Dan Dobbins were discussing it on the radio broadcast. Always enjoy listening to those guys...they do a great job.
