Re: Manchester vs Clay in sectional tourney 02-23-10
I have only seen Clay and that was when Valley rocked them a week or two ago. I haven't seen Manchester, but any team that, no matter when it was, has beaten Ironton is a good basketball team. I would have to go with the Greyhounds in this one. The SOC is just not very good right now. Manchester has played a lot tougher schedule and that will show in this game. 59-46.

Good Defense is going to win this game for either Manchester or Clay. The Panthers need to play like a Team and get motivated. Good Luck tonight at Valley!

You are right Clay needs to not be lazy and play defense and the post players need to play like they can! Good luck Clay.

Clay is not a great defensive team, so IMO they need to attack and score. With four juniors avg 9-12 ppg, they need to attack from all sides. If one player tries to do it all, they will be in trouble, it's easy for a team to shut down one kid, but hard to shut down all 5.

Hmm! Sounded like a good game for Manchester. Clay just couldn't close the gap.

CLAY 11 14 10 24 FINAL 59
MANCH 16 15 14 25 FINAL 70
I didn't get to hear the stats at the end of the game but at halftime Manchester had 19 rebounds, to Clays 12. Manchester had 12 offensive rebounds to Clay's 1. I believe that got worse in the second half and that was the difference in the game. Clay could not box out Manchesters big men, or for that matter, even their small guys.

I agree. That kid was a thorn in the Panthers side on the offensive glass, but then again just about every Greyhound player was. Clay didn't do a very good job of boxing out and even gave up offensive rebounds on missed free throws by not boxing out and letting guys sneak underneath for easy rebounds and put backs. Clay cut the lead down to around 4 points a couple times but couldn't ever get any closer and turnovers and missed shots led to Manchester getting some quick baskets to put them back up by double digits where it stayed for most of the 4th quarter.
One thing I don't understand was why Coach Trainer pulled his starters out with 1:43 left and only down 10 points. Why would you give up that early??? What does that tell your team??? That you have no confidence in them??? I've watched this man coach for three years now and I still can't find a method for his madness, but to completely give up on your team with that much time left is uncalled for. The big boy for Manchester had just fouled out so you keep fouling them and putting them on the line and hopefully they miss and you get some baskets to cut into the lead. I've seen 10 point leads disappear in a lot less time. Anything can happen if you give the kids the chance but by pulling your starters with 1:43 left and telling them not to foul you have given up.
Another thing I don't understand is why he pulls out the kid with the hot hand and sits him for a while so he cools off. I have seen him do it numerous times and in this game Bussler had just hit a 3, drove the lane for a bucket, and then got a put back and the foul for a quick 7 or 8 points to get Clay back to within striking distance and Trainer pulls him and sits him and while he's on the bench the leads goes back up around 12 or 13 points.
I also don't understand why the Graham boy never saw the floor until the last minute of the game and no one in the stands understood why either. Did he do something and was being disciplined? I'm sure his size along with Lawson my have helped keep Manchester off the offensive boards.

Is Coach Trainer returning next year?
