An SOC-SEOAL merger?
An SOC-SEOAL merger?
Alot of conversation about the SOC competing very well against the SEOAL in basketball this year. Maybe it's time to talk about the merits of conference mergers?
I dont believe Gallia Academy, Logan and Warren would be interested. Maybe Jackson wouldnt either. However I think Portsmouth and Ironton may have interest in expanding to a third division of the SOC.
Think of these matchups in regular season basketball:
Valley Vs. Jackson
Portsmouth vs. Burg
Ironton vs. Waverly
Oak Hill vs. Chillicothe
Just interchange those 8 teams and wow, what games and competition you would have each game.
What about football? Unreal matchups and unbelievable crowds.
A SOC-SEOAL challenge? Instead of once a year, how about every weekend?

Re: An SOC-SEOAL merger?
Talk about the big east of southern Ohio basketball. That would be one huge conference.

Portsmouth has wanted in the SOC for years now. But, they can't get the votes from a couple of the SOC schools.

Re: An SOC-SEOAL merger?
I heard that Jackson would like to be in the SOC II. I think they would be a great fit in the SOC.
Re: An SOC-SEOAL merger?
It's a pipe dream but one I would like to see happen. The SOC II is mired in their "old ways" I don't think they'll ever invite either team. I don't know if the issue is hard feelings from years gone by or if some are just afraid of the competition. Either way, I don't see an expansion happening anytime soom. JMO!
Oh, I forgot to mention the ARROGANCE of some from BOTH communtities certainly makes it easier for them to not get an invite!
Hard for me to imagine that either of these two schools could be as arrogant as one current member.

Valley Vs. Jackson
Portsmouth vs. Burg
Ironton vs. Waverly
Oak Hill vs. Chillicothe
These mathcups would be good "sometimes"....but overall year in year out the seoal schools would just beat up on the smaller soc schools just because the #'s are so much larger these schools are going to have the better athletes 95% of the time so oak hill could beat chilly 1 or 2 years or waverly over ironton but in the long run i think the smaller soc schools would just be embarrassed by these larger schools due to the talent differential....but that's just my opinion

Re: An SOC-SEOAL merger?
numbers are bigger? How much bigger is Portsmouth and Ironton to West, Minford, Burg, Valley, Waverly? Not much if any. Waverly and Jackson are comparable.

Which BOTH communtities (sic) ? Valley and Oak Hill ?
I thought 85I mentioned 4 non-SOC schools in his 1st post.... but now we're down to TWO ?
Valley Vs. Jackson
Portsmouth vs. Burg
Ironton vs. Waverly
Oak Hill vs. Chillicothe
Don't cha know that 85I only started this thread to "stir the pot" ?? He figured all the SOC followers would say.... HELL NO !!... because he figured they would all be skeered of his Tiggers. Talk about ARROGANCE !! (And I don't want to hear anything from the TIGGER fans because I85 referred to Ashland as the TomKITTENS on here just a few days ago). If ya can't take it, don't put it out.

Yea, thats why the Tomkittens are about 2-10 in their last 12 against ironton. The 16th region being so tough, is why only Ashland remains on the schedule and they only agree to play ironton once per year. It was great great back in the 60's and 70's when they had good teams over there. they always wanted to play ironton twice a year. Now none of them come around any more. Even Russell has dropped after being thoroughly dominated the past 5 seasons!

Re: An SOC-SEOAL merger?
2009-2011 enrollment figures and divisional breakdowns
Chillicothe 331 D2
Jackson 301 D2
Gallia Academy 268 D2
Waverly 253 D2
Portsmouth 204 D3
Northwest 192 D3
Ironton 182 D3
West 180 D3
Minford 169 D3
Burg 150 D3
Valley 152D3
Oak Hill 145 D3
South Webster 116 D4
It looks like from Portsmouth down to Oak Hill enrollment really isn’t very different. I can see while South Webster wouldn’t want to play any bigger teams as they only have 116 boys. I understand why they wouldn’t want to have to deal with the d2 schools, however d2 Waverly is already in the SOC so there is obviously a double standard.

Well since it will never happen, always fun to talk about it though....Portsmouht has played West, Waverly, Burg, Minford in football and the record is so-so and in BB Valley just beat PHS and South Webster put it to them earlier this year,,,I know BiggDogg and Old Trojan and Tobias will say those are isloated, but I think PHS would be a great fit for the SOC,,,never going to happen but it would be nice....wiapalawalt

Actually I mentioned Jackson and Waverly as well. Not just Ironton and Portsmouth. I started the thread because I think it would be neat to see big crowds at our sporting events. A third division of the SOC makes since. Leave the two divisons of the SOC alone and add a third divison, made up of 5 or 6 new schools. How about the old SEOAL South? I know GAHS thinks that Gallia Academy would never leave the SEOAL, but if Jackson, Chillicothe, Portsmouth and Ironton formed a third division of the SOC, why wouldnt Gallia follow?
Why would SOC schools not favor expansion, if it never effected their current layout?
Re: An SOC-SEOAL merger?
would rather see a SOC-OVC merger it would be better for football to since the SOC and OVC already play alot of teams from both confrences

Re: An SOC-SEOAL merger?
I would think the alignment for something like that would go like this for basketball.
SOC3
Chillicothe 331 D2
Jackson 301 D2
Gallia Academy 268 D2
Waverly 253 D2
Portsmouth 204 D3
Northwest 192 D3
Ironton 182 D3
SOC 2
West 180 D3
Minford 169 D3
Burg 150 D3
Valley 152D3
Oak Hill 145 D3
South Webster 116 D4
SOC1
Symmes Valley 108 D4
Eastern 95 D4
East 87 D4
Western 86 D4
Green 70 D4
Clay 54 D4 (seems low to me but that’s what is on the OHSAA site)
New Boston 38 D4
Notre Dame 36 D4
For football
SOC 3
Chillicothe 331 D3
Jackson 301 D3
Gallia Academy 268 D3 (I doubt they would join, I think they would try the TVC first)
Waverly 253 D3
Portsmouth 204 D4
Ironton 182 D4
If Gallia didn’t join I would let West and Burg decide if they wanted to play with the big schools or stay in SOC 2. Here is the alignment if they choose to stay in SOC 2.
SOC 2
Northwest 192 D4
West 180 D4
Minford 169 D5
Burg 150 D5
Valley 152D5
Oak Hill 145 D5
SOC 1
Symmes Valley 108 D6
East 87 D6
Green 70 D6
Notre Dame 36 D6
Manchester 113 D6 ( not in the SOC right, but play independent in football)
If Burg and West play in the play in the big division I would add Symmes Valley to SOC 2 and start looking for a replacement in SOC1. I would first try South Gallia, although I doubt they would be interested now.
SOC3
Chillicothe 331 D2
Jackson 301 D2
Gallia Academy 268 D2
Waverly 253 D2
Portsmouth 204 D3
Northwest 192 D3
Ironton 182 D3
SOC 2
West 180 D3
Minford 169 D3
Burg 150 D3
Valley 152D3
Oak Hill 145 D3
South Webster 116 D4
SOC1
Symmes Valley 108 D4
Eastern 95 D4
East 87 D4
Western 86 D4
Green 70 D4
Clay 54 D4 (seems low to me but that’s what is on the OHSAA site)

SOC 3

Waverly 253 D3

Ironton 182 D4

SOC 2
Northwest 192 D4
West 180 D4
Minford 169 D5
Burg 150 D5
Valley 152D5
Oak Hill 145 D5
SOC 1
Symmes Valley 108 D6
East 87 D6
Green 70 D6
Notre Dame 36 D6
Manchester 113 D6 ( not in the SOC right, but play independent in football)
If Burg and West play in the play in the big division I would add Symmes Valley to SOC 2 and start looking for a replacement in SOC1. I would first try South Gallia, although I doubt they would be interested now.
Re: An SOC-SEOAL merger?
the soc is just fine the way it is. these other schools should just form their own league! the soc 2 has 2 state championships in the last 5 years or so, i don't think their members fear anyone and that one arrogant member of the soc has held their own with these schools in all sports! just go and form your own league...maybe call it the NLL conference!

I started the thread because I think it would be neat to see big crowds at our sporting events. The SOC2 already has nice crowds. You can't fill up the home side of tigger stadium so now you're looking for a "fix" to help refill your coffers your AD drained in gas travel money

Re: An SOC-SEOAL merger?
If you want to add a third soc3 of schools from another conference, why not just call it the seoal 2.
