Rosecrans beat Caldwell by, well, a lot. According to what I heard, this was payback for football season. Rosecrans claimed Caldwell ran the score up on them and told one of the coaches that they'll get us back in basketball. Also heard that Rosecrans volunteered to drop down into Caldwell's bracket just to get the chance to play them. If this is true, it makes me lol.

Rosecrans was the #1 seed. Teams cannot pass their turn to choose a spot on the bracket board. Therefore, Rosecrans had to go to one of the 8 spots ( there were only 8 teams in this sectional) available to them. Caldwell was the #6 seed; since the #2 must go opposite of #1, that left 3 spots in each side of the brackets to fill. In this year's case, the nos. 3,4,5 all went to the #2 team's bracket. That left the 6,7,8 seeds to fill Rosecrans side. Caldwell at #6 could have chosen to play Rosecrans in their sectional opener, but chose to fill one spot of an open game. Shadyside then chose 7th and elected to play Caldwell. Shady won 2 games all year and CHS beat them by a whopping 2 pts.

Rosecrans is Ranked #1 in the state AP poll. If they chose to punish Caldwell for a perceived (real or not) unsportsmanlike act in another sport, then I'd say boys b-ball was their time to do it. Perhaps the 40 pt. margin of victory was indicative of the talent gap between the #1 team in the state and a team that won only 5-6 games.

40 points theoretically equals 10 pts per qtr. Rosecrans is probably more than 10 pts a qtr. better than CHS.

In the eastern district the #1 and #2 seeds can pass putting themselves on the bracket. Teams aren't automatically assigned to a spot based on seed, the coaches choose where they want to go. That is why you saw Rosecrans go to the bottom game on the bracket which in turn caused seeds 2-5 to all jump to the top half. Caldwell just had the bad luck of getting the six seed and getting put on that side. I didn't feel Rosecrans ran up the score, they would beat every team in that sectional by 40 plus if they felt like it. Rosecrans has to think about preparing themselves for the grinder they face the rest of the way, they typically only play five or six kids so they have to have court time. Rock was very complimentary of the Caldwell kids, stating that it was one of the few times they played a team that competed hard enough for his kids to really benefit from playing against them. The game was entertaining for a little over a quarter then the difference in skill level shined through. Overall I'd say it was a good first year for the Redskins. 8 wins, lost three other games they held double digit leads in, lost tight games that could have gone either way with Central (first game of the year), River @ home, and @ Frontier. Return Five varsity regulars next season and bring in an extremely talented freshman class. We will see how hard they are willing to work.

and pointman.....yes Caldwell did only beat Shadyside by two points, with five of their 8 kids throwing up sick before/during/after the game and still holding a double figure lead the majority of the second half it wasn't that bad. Realistically, considering the Redskins beat second seeded River once on their court, lost to them in a tight one at home, beat third seeded Beallsville by twenty then blew a twenty point lead @ Beallsville (a place that shouldn't be allowed to hold varsity bball games), and beat 5th seeded Frontier a week before the tourny by around ten I'd say seeds 2-6 were all pretty even. Survive and advance.

Caldwell will not see much improvement in number of wins in the foreseeable future. Your JV team was awful and you lose every one of your "top" players. CHS win at River was a major fluke as was the close RHS win at Caldwell. River was a far more talented team than Caldwell.

I did not say that teams were automatically placed on the bracket according to seed. I said Rosecrans had 8 choices as the #1 seed!

Better look at River's results before you lump 2-6 seeds closely together.

River beat Frontier 3 times by 15 pts. or more

River beat Beallsville by 15 once and 20+ the other.

River beat MC, Shen (2), Trail (2), Shady (2), Caldwell (1), B-port (1) Barnesville (1)
