Pembrook,It is obvious no one played defense in the Ashland game. The mentallity of I will out score you and not play defense will only get you in to the tournament til you run on to someone that does play defense..As far as Irontons talent goes they have plenty and will win a lot of games or should win a lot.Ironton has had the talent since Zornes was there and Lafon is reaping the benefits of the program he built. He started out with Gagai which couldn't have been better for him and is now winning with kids that don't play football and live on the AAU circuit in the summer. He wasn't a good coach at South Point and isn't now,but I guess his claim to fame was he beat Norm a couple of times while at S.Point.Not saying hes a bad person just not a good coach. As far as the Ironton Classic goes he and his puppets do a good job, but its not brain surgery to get that done.Make calls, get great sponsors and a lot of volunteer help.I know a lot of hours go into putting that together but nothing that couldn't be done by any other AD or coach.I believe Ironton was also an independent once before and did it without Lafon being here.I know you must adore him but hes not gods gift of coaches or athletic directors. Not bashing... This Ironton team is loaded, with the talent and the coaches they have , they can for sure make a run for a state Title.

I don't know, Ashland shot 27-65 from the field for only 41%. That's not bad defense, especially since the game got a bit out of hand early, but I would prefer to see it below 40%. So point taken, T. And as far as I know, God doesn't gift coaches to anyone; he/she has more important matters to attend to. So there's at least two things we can agree upon. :)

Good defense or POOR SHOT SELECTION..I understand God is busy with more important things, but I should have made it more clear that I was refering to the basketball gods of Ironton..

I think it's ridiculous the coaching staff takes up 3/4 of the bench.

And I think it's RIDICULOUS that you people can't say a single CONGRATULATORY/COMPLIMENTARY THING about a 20-point victory for the Ironton Fighting Tigers over a much larger and highly touted Ashland Paul Blazer HS team. You call yourselves Tiger Fans??? HAH! Mercy - What do you want?????

Don't get me wrong....I for one am glad they won. I'm just saying there is no reason to have 9 coaches sitting on the bench.

He has His assistant Coaches and the 7th, 8th, 9th, and JV Coaches on the Bench which I think it's good for those Coaches to be there myself, they learn Coach Lafons style of Coaching and know what will be expected from their Players once they reach the Varsity level.

Teresa, to a few of your points:

1) Have you seen all of Ironton's schedule or just the first two games?? This is one of the best schedules you will see a team like us play in a regular season. And Coach Lafon consistently does this year in and year out. You might lose a few games, but once tournament time comes rolling around, we're always ready to go in full force.

2) Poor defense, are you serious?! How about pretty good offense. The Delaney kid was one of the best shooters that I personally have ever said, with exception of Dennis Gagai. ANd you bring up another thing about poor shot selection. What do you think bring about these poor shots? Perhaps some quality defense forcing them?

3) You say Coach Lafon is a bad coach...I know I can give you two examples that I experienced. My sophomore year when we lost to Wheelersburg in the Regional Finals. We had no where near the talent to be in that game, let alone to have a chance at the end to win it. Also, my senior year when were district runner-ups with a team that probably shouldn't have been that far in the tournament. Also had a chance to win that one. He has this ability to get out of kids what I've never seen any other coach do. No matter how much talent he has, he always seems to get the full potential out of that talent. If that makes him a bad coach, there must not be very many good ones out there.

Actually Kevin is right on the money. Ashland Paul Blazer is the WINNINGEST high school in Kentucky history! And tied for second in most state tourney championships with 4. So I wouldnt proclaim to know more than him if I were you without doing YOUR research first.

Ashland has always had a rich tradition in basketball ,BUT not this year........ Answering TigerTownKids comments, the sectional and district tournament in this area as a whole is as weak if not the weakest in Ohio.I've seen all those games .Its not pretty.I know its set up that way by the state but win one in sec and two in district and ur in the regional only really two tough maybe just one to get to the state..I know Ironton beat Peebles last year on a basically buzzer beater but Lafon was so out coached it was pitiful...Again overall talent prevailed in that one and it took a desperation shot to do it and I also remember pikleton using Ironton also and he was out coached by Lisath in that one..I have no dislike for Lafon as a person, this is JUST MY OPINION from what I see

Whoa, how am I the worst one of all. What did I say in there about how great Ashland was and that it was a quality win? I said Ashland was a good team and obviously a very good program, if you're trying to deny that, then you need to go somewhere else. I just would love to know why I got proclaimed the "worst out of the bunch."

And as always I cannot wait until tournament time to make all these obvious haters of Ironton athletics eat that yummy crow.

I didnt fire off anything. Just stating that Ashland has a good program. They may be down a little this year, I dont know. Never seen them. And like I said I dont care if they are good or bad. I just found it funny littlefoot thought the statement was so far off base. Never seen anyone with a stuttering problem while typing either....just saying.
