Parents!!

Post by love_the_game »

I have heard many times that the worst thing about sports (in general) but especially high school sports is the parents!! I would just like to make one observation about that. Perhaps the worst parents I have witnessed is, by far, the parents that are coaches! Parents in the stands may want their child to be the best and maybe even think their child is the best, but I have seen coaches (parents) that think the very same thing about their child, whom they happen to be coaching. I have seen awards given when they are not deserved (thus taking that award from the athlete that actually earned it), special treatment of their kid, and even going so far as to lie about the stats. Talk about integrity! We encourage the players, parents, and fans to act with sportsmanship and integrity, but it is kinda hard when the coaches do not. Give me a break!

I have heard this anology many times over the years on here. I tend to go completely the other direction. Anytime I have coached my daughter I held her to a higher standard/expectation.

In the whole scheme of things, the most important lessons arnt the ones learned about actual basketball. The best things I learned from the sport are life lessons. If you dont let your team down, you wont let your family down. If you are punctual for practice you will be punctual to work. Getting beat isnt important its how you get back up and keep going. etc.

You cant put everything in the form of an award. Its not about today. Its about the future. The tkid that is receiving an unjust reward isnt getting a gift its a curse. They will feel like a failure later if not already . If your son or daughter is being treated unfairly then good, they will be adjusted by the time they get a job and someone does it there. I know its frustrating, but Im hereto tell ya it gets better!!

That is a great reply and so very true! Looking at the big picture, the kids who are working hard and learning to put up with the ups and downs and unfairness of a little thing like basketball will be better prepared for life in general. After all, if it doesn't kill ya, it makes ya stronger! The hard thing is it is easy for us as adults and their parents to see that but sometimes it is discouraging for them. And why can't the parent/coach see that. I know there are a few good parent/coaches but very few in my opinion!

I can tell you first hand that it is a struggle alot of us have to deal with. Once again its the big picture that comes into play. None of us really know the burdens another has to carry. I would like to think that they really care about the kids, but dont know how to show it. Its definately a sign of frustration. I wish I had the answer. GOOD LUCK IN YOUR VENTURES.
