Not with the record they have. If I see a player step up the rest of the way and become a spark plug and get this team going in the TVC-OHIO I would reconsider. Griffin Lutz was that player over ther last couple of seasons, this year I am still waiting on someone to be a Leader of this Team. Nobody is standing out in that regard as far as Athens goes at this Time. But as someone pointed out we aren't quite halfway into season yet.93Bulldog wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2018 3:29 pm One poster posted that Butcher and Williams are the two best players for Athens and should never leave the floor.
Another poster thinks Eli Chubb is the best player for his all around solid play.
Last two posters say Hines should be in the running for POY
How in the world is this team (3-8)? Hahaha

These posts illustrate why we need stats. Opinions are all over the place. Most posters only see a few teams on a regular basis - I see Athens, NY, Trimble & Vinton twice. Stats are crucial to analyze consistency. Players have off games..... I've seen 3 or 4 individual amazing games. Athens seems to think they have a whole starting lineup full of candidates.......Show me pts/ rbs/ assists.VisionQuest wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2018 3:31 pmYes, there is so much more to this then PPG. If I am looking at a player I look at Rebounds, Shot blocking, defense, getting the rebounds and getting the ball out quick to get into transition, I like the player who has that Court Vision holding his head up while he dribbles and scanning the floor, I like that player who takes quality shots and makes the extra pass and rarely makes turnovers, I like the player who loves to play and is Unselfish, ultimately that player who is not interested in Numbers which is what we all are on here talking about.bburner wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2018 2:45 pm I need to see at least scoring rebounding & assist stats. I've seen Speakman vs NY but no Yates. I thought Bohyer for NY was best player that night with 23 rebounds and 33 pts despite Speakman's 42.
I think Hines from Athens deserves some consideration as well because of his dominance in the paint. It's not all about points.
I would like to know some stats on some of these players. I think for alot of us POY was decided prior to start of season.

Like I said in a previous post I don't think at this point any Athens player is deserving. If one was curious of Stats I would say 93Bulldog would have these. But it's a moot point at this Juncture in the season. Now if Athens can turn it around starting with VC tmrw night and win the TVC-OHIO somehow, then I would be interested to see the statistics of the players and make a case for a Certain player.bburner wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2018 3:46 pmThese posts illustrate why we need stats. Re: Possible POY in TVC
The stat sheet is only good if it is accurate . Some( NOT ALL) schools pad stats to get a few players high honors . Some(NOT ALL) sports writers do the same to justify nominations for ALL District honors .A few very good players last year were left out for some reason or another. Stats can be taken off game films but then again must be done by an impartial qualified individual . Or you could have PFloyd do them for a fee because his is way more accurate than some you read . Maybe that is why they go on points . But then again points and stats do not tell the whole story but is the the head lines you read . Good teams the players will do what ever is needed to win . POY should be the the player that elevates his or hers team to the highest level possible. I still think its Yates if he gets back to where he was last year if not Speakman should be in the mix . Mattox from Meigs if they keep winning . I am confused to who is Athens BEST PLAYER IS . Before the season it was Cozart , then people were talking about a different player it seem like every game . POY will not come from Athens IMO. Player most likely from VC will be POY . Good luck to all the players and teams .bburner wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2018 2:45 pm I need to see at least scoring rebounding & assist stats. I've seen Speakman vs NY but no Yates. Re: Possible POY in TVC
POY in general is such a great topic/thread. There are so many factors that could/should me considered... I try to also think of the coaching style and what is "allowed" for their team. Example, some coaches slow down games and only want to score 40 pts, and play GREAT "d" and keep opponents to ~30 pts. Individual players on those teams rarely have an opportunity to score >20 pts in any single game, yet they could be great candidates for POY.
Great thread, fun reading.

IMO, the POY is going to come from a team that has a winning record to start with. And they should be more than a 1 dimensional player. Like bc said if you're playing a team with a slow tempo then the scorer better be able to do other things to help his team. Just don't see a POY coming from a team that is 2-9 and 1-4 in the league at this point. Still halfway to go. Hocking is going to be fun watching these important games coming up and seeing who can win on the road. The Ohio seems to be already established who their top teams in the conference are.
Good luck to all the teams coming down the stretch.

Trimble's Hixon has to be considered in Hocking division. He is the leading scorer.
Re: Possible POY in TVC
Lot of season left, but could there be a possibility that a team can be 2-9 because a possible POY was on the bench with an injury during 6 of those losses and they are 2-3 with with them?Hornetz_Fan32 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2018 9:24 am IMO, the POY is going to come from a team that has a winning record to start with. Re: Possible POY in TVC
After seeing VC I'm thinking it's Speakman award to lose. Scored 27 without making a single three. Handles the ball, can break down a defense better than anyone I've seen all year. Given Yates early injury and not playing a few league games - I'd say Combs puts Speakman up and it would hard to vote for anyone else.

Jake Speakman. Especially seeing him first hand now. Kid had quality steals, was solid at the free throw line, knows how to attack the lane and score as well as free up others on the edge drawing defenders in. Then, you can throw in all the points. Good solid player.

The way that the Speakman kid penetrated that tenacious Athens zone the other night - very impressive. Takes a special player to do that. Made me a believer

Speakman has a quick move and if you do not put your best Defensive player on him he will go for 25 to 30. He will split a zone and get into the gaps . IMO Athens needs to get away from that ZONE . Maybe not all together but teach your team to play Man and close out and help out . Sounds like Speakman will get a lot of consideration for POY.Sniper_Fan wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2018 5:02 pm The way that the Speakman kid penetrated that tenacious Athens zone the other night - very impressive. IMO, Yates and Speakman are finalists with Yates leading the way for me. The one thing keeping me from selecting Speakman is his not being able to stay under control sometimes. I decided to go across town Tuesday to catch that game and watched him get caught with three charges. There is nothing wrong with shooting a a shot from the block.

Re: Possible POY in TVC
The three charges could be a direct result from constantly attacking with the basketball in his hand. The kid makes a lot happen on the court. Rarely do you see 27 point performances without a single three. He WAS the difference in the game vs Athens. 27 pts, 5 rebounds, 13-of-14 from the charity stripe, dominated the ball when Athens tried to pressure, broke down the Athens zone - and when he did - he either scored or dished out to shooters for treys ... Yates, a very good player, but seemed to settle for just being a spot up shooter. 17 points in the game (four 3's), just 2-of-3 from the free throw line.Copenhagen wrote: ↑Fri Jan 12, 2018 12:00 am IMO, Yates and Speakman are finalists with Yates leading the way for me. Both good players, and I know its only a small sample size (1 game) - but I'd vote for Speakman in a heartbeat and its not even really that close, IMO.
Now, if Yates were to become more active in the paint and do more than just sit behind the arc and fire three's - then it would become very interesting because he is such a great athlete and skilled basketball player.
Re: Possible POY in TVC
Its Speakman now imo, but lot if ball left. Yates is yet to peak after a slow start. He will get more active as we wind up league play and it will be between these two. It is a toss-up or pick-em when it gets down to it.

Anyone know if Speakman does anything besides score?......He should be the front runner at the halfway point.....
