Fairfield Union @ Meigs - Tuesday

Post by Hookshot »

Fairfield Union (14-7) at Meigs (16-5) Tuesday night in opening tournament action for both schools.

Status of these two teams -- key matchups. Injury, health report. Predictions? I've seen them both but not enough for an extensive preview.

This could be a great game. I know Meigs has had significant injury issues — not certain if Fairfield Union is 100% for this game or not. Despite the Marauders lineup challenges, I think this is a toss-up game or even marginal advantage to the home team.

Fairfield Union by 15

Too many injuries for Meigs and it feels as though the teams are going in opposite directions.

You may be right. Didn’t FU have a relatively new injury that could impact them? I’m not certain but someone knows one way or the other.

Gameday.

Not much talk about what looks like an interesting matchup tonight. Despite the seeding, I have Fairfield Union as the favorite in this one based on the Meigs injury situation and the strength of the MSL compared to the TVC. It's tournament time though and a Marauder victory wouldn't surprise me too much. They've had a nice season.

Fairfield Union wins 64-54

Sounds like an interesting game with Meigs being up 38-30 at the break

MSL Player of the Year Caleb Schmelzer keeps his career going with 34 for the Falcons.

Meigs did all they could.
Actually pretty remarkable playing with just 5 players.
Only sub they had was a big man at the 5 position.
4 players out, 3 of which were starters and leading scorers.
Only 1 senior on the floor tonight.
Injury bug has been horrible to this team.
Boys played with heart and had a good game plan for tonight, they just tired out in the 4th. Could've used a few more timeouts.

That’s awful. Great effort and a really good season overall.

I'd say Meigs made a valiant effort, leading by 8 at halftime. Besides Harrison and Brinager who was the third starter out?

Wow. Tremendous effort from Meigs. They should be commended for their heart and also not resorting to a gimmick like holding the ball even though they were severely undermanned.

Gimmick? Thats good coaching. You do what you need to do to give your team a chance to win. If fans dont like it, tough shite.

It’s not real basketball. You can bleed clock in the confines of a shot clock (college teams do it all the time) but there’s no reason a team should be allowed to hold the ball without attempting to score.

Again, kudos to Meigs for not being cowards and actually playing.

Hosey,
boss8 is complementing Meigs for despite being undermanned w/no bench they still went out and played their normal game against Fairfield rather than resorting to something off the wall like holding the ball and stalling the game out.

The other 2 Meigs players that were out are senior starter Brayden Stanley and senior co-captain Griffin Cleland (high ankle sprain from VC game)

What makes you the authority on real basketball? Maybe a team has dimished ability in the outside game. So the coach holds the ball and has team work the ball through an offense but only shoots layups. This is good coaching. Highlight your strength and devalue a weakness.

They might want to consider hiring a good strength coach. I realize that’s taboo with most of the basketball coaches in and from Meigs County but it could help with the injuries. Of course if listen to the old school coaches they will tell “those weights will throw off your shot…”

Well that makes sense. Don’t resort to a “gimmick” and try to win. Just go ahead and lose. “Yeah that’s right, we only had 5 players but gosh darn it we weren’t gonna hold the ball so we could keep our players from getting too tired and trying to win. Better to lose than playing within the rules and changing our game to try to win. Better to pretend it’s against the rules and just lose. That’s more manly.”

Their game plan was fine. Maybe could have been even more deliberate in the second half but they honestly missed a few open looks and the big for FU really just decided to take over in the second half getting down hill and forcing his way to the rim, kudos to him. He is a big time player and has been getting it down at a high level the last couple years. In terms of a strength coach, I know most of their kids put in the work in the weight room throughout the year. Sprained ankles happen and 3 freak injuries in terms of 2 ACLs and a kid getting undercut in the air and landing awkwardly on his hand breaking it.
