Trimble 70 Miller38 a sectional final ...

Trimble 70
Miller 38 a final

... tough spot to be in for the D4 teams at the Logan sectional finals on Friday night as Trimble vs Miller came in as 2nd billing to the "featured" 1st game of the night in the D2 division - Warren vs Jackson ... Trimble entered with a regular season record of 12-8, losing 4 of their last 6 games ...Miller (10-12) came into the sectional final on a 4 game win streak ... even with a pair of convincing regular season W's over Miller (71.5 ppg/40ppg in the 2 outings) coming into the sectional on a losing note was a concern for Coach Howie Caldwell's Tomcats ...

... the D4 division is usually highlighted by quickness,a transition game, 3 point shooting, lots of up and down the court action and with the better teams - good fundamentals/team concepts & good man to man D ... one of the down sides to MOST teams in D4 is that when you talk "bigs" you are usually talking players of the 6-2 range give or take an inch either way ... Miller had a pair of bigs in 6-2 soph Bryce Dorsey - who had both 6-2 height and strength to go with good perimeter scoring, the 2nd "big" was 6-2 (looked taller to me) with length jr. Logan Doughty both made their presence felt in the opening quarter of play as Doughty led the Falcons with 8 pts on a pair of 3's and a size advantage drive to the rim for 2pts ... Doughty with his size and quickness took a Trimble miscue the other way for a transition bucket (2pts) senior shooting guard Corey Elson opened the scoring for Miller draining a triple from the wing & fellow senior Austin Perry with a strip and score transition bucket for 2pts (4pts in the qtr)... 17 first qtr points for the Falcons set the bar for the qtr ... Coach Caldwell's Tomcats are always game for a battle ... tenacious man to man D is the norm, lots of offensive movement, picks & backdoor cuts constantly looking inside for the shot at the rim ... the Trimble D turned the Falcons over 6 times in the opening period ... the starters/all seniors for the Tomcats accounted for 8pts in the period led by sr Michael Clark's 4pts , Cole Wright's 2 pts in the paint and 2/2 from the FT line by Brandon Burdette ... off the bench soph Luke Orsborne hit a 3 pointer and added 2 pts in the paint ... Chase Patton made a difference in the paint as the 5-11 junior picked up 2 putback buckets off of offensive rebounds (4pts) , got fouled getting to the rim 1/2 from the line , the soph added a midrange jumper for 2pts (7pts) when the smoke cleared and the points tallied it was Trimble 20 Miller 17 after 1 ... Miller started the 2nd period with a 5-0 run at 5:18 on the clock as Corey Elson hit his 2nd trey of the game and Logan Doughty used his length to get to the rim for 2pts (4 in the qtr/6 pts for the half) ... with the Falcon wakeup call in taking the lead, Trimble answered with 3 straight strong, in the paint putback buckets as 6-1 Cole Wright crashed the offensive boards for 2 fgs/ 4pts ... sr. swing forward Levi Weber ,a 5-8 "big" for the Tomcats, added a lefthanded stickback to go with a transition bucket (4pts) ... off the Tomcat bench Luke Orsborne hit a deep 3 ball , the sophomores 2nd three of the game ... Trimble 31 Miller 29 at the half ... I hadn't seen Miller in person during the regular season, I HAD SEEN the scores to their regular season games- the Trimble wins vs Miller 69-37, 74-43 ... the Miller vs Harvest Prep score of 38-127 HP win , then the 101-79 win over Millersport - the Falcons can score the ball and give up big points (depending on the competition obviously) ... in a meaningful game like this my money is on the KNOWN commodity - Coach Howie Caldwell, Howie picked up his 600th win earlier this season - qualifying Coach as the Man, the Myth, the Legend - Coach has always gotten the most out of the players/teams he has coached ... adjustments at the half whether that be on the floor or in adjusting players attitudes on the court ... Coach has done it 600+ times ... the Tomcats came out of the locker room with a different floor attitude - defensively it looked from the Cheap Seats the goal was to "shut them out" with D ... on offense in the first 2 periods the Tomcats were getting beat on the boards, not rebounding the ball- 90% of getting boards is attitude - going after the ball like your life depended on it - in basketball your "survive and advance" life DOES depend on it at both ends - getting offensive boards to keep a possession alive or at the defensive end to limit the opponent to one and done ... coming out after the intermission you could see an "attitude adjustment" had been made in the Tomcats as Trimble took complete control of both ends of the floor ... offensively senior Michael Clark put up 14 pts on his own ball with a pair of 3's, a transition bucket for 2pts, a putback 2 pter and a hard drive to the rim (14pts in the qtr/18 for the game) Brandon Burdette went 2/2 from the FT line to go with a transition bucket/ Kaden Kempton added a transition basket 2pts and off the bench freshman Brady Jajczyk dropped 3 ball from beyond the arc ... at the defensive end - the Tomcats turned the Falcons over 4 times converting 3 into points on layups (6pts) ... held MHS to 2 fgs in the quarter ... held Miller to 1 FT as the first points of the quarter at the 3:21 mark ... didn't give up the first fg in the qtr until 1:31 on the clock- a transition bucket by Logan Doughty and the final fg in the period again Doughty on a drive to the rim ... 5pts total for Miller in the 3rd ... game , set and match in favor of Trimble ... Trimble 52 Miller 34 after 3 ... the averages for the season series were playing out - Trimble offensively scoring 71.5 ppg vs Miller while giving up 40 ppg vs Miller ... the Trimble D continued to be THE factor - holding Miller to 4 pts in the 4th ... while the offense was shared between the all senior starters (10 pts - 5pts by Clark/4 pts Weber/1 pt Wright) and next years Trimble team 7pts (Paul Sharp a trey (3pts)/Luke Orsborne 2pts in the paint/Caleb Cahoe 2pts on a putback bucket) ... Coach Howie " the Man, the Myth, the Legend" is going back to the Convo for the D4 District semi's ... Trimble 70 Miller 38 a final ...

For all you doubters and haters remember, I told you so. It’s tourney time and this is when our Howie is at his best. The STOMP ain’t dead. Far from it. We came up into this game with the mindset that we’re 0-0. Now we’re 1-0, but when practice starts we’ll be 0-0 again. Good luck is all I can say for any team in our way. You doubters better jump back on the bandwagon before we close the entryway. Go Cats!
