Of the OVC schools that Portsmouth has played, South Point, Fairland, and Chesapeake have had some competitive hardwood battles with the Trojans. So far in OVC play since PHS joined the conference in 2015, PHS is 11-9 vs. SP, 10-10 vs. CHS, and 4-16 vs. Fairland. FHS had won 16 in a row vs. the Trojans, including the most recent tournament game, but the last 2 years PHS has split the regular season with the Dragons. The Trojans are 5-3 vs. SP in the tournament, but the Pointers have won the last 3, those being in 2017, 2022, and 2023. PHS is 8-0 vs. Chesapeake in the tournament, including a classic D3 regional final in 2012 at the Convo that the Trojans won 69-68 on a Wayne Evans teardrop shot with 4 seconds to play. PHS is 4-2 vs. Fairland in the tournament, including the 1990 district championship and the 1991 regional semifinal. Fairland handed PHS one of the worst tournament defeats in school history, an 85-47 pasting in the 2021 sectional.

So many great rivalries, some old and some new......and hopefully they will continue to be for years to come.
Always fun playing Portsmouth in the tournament! Both schools always have a good fan turnout, and the Trojan fans are usually really great.
I remember one year when I was in HS, Portsmouth played in the same group as us and the Trojan fans were cheering for the Dragons in our game (I wanna say we were playing Alexander?) so a bunch of Fairland students/fans stuck around for the PHS game to cheer on the Trojans.

Found out today on www.trojanhoops.org., that the Trojans defeated Fairland 76-47 in the 1990 sectional tournament. PHS now leads the series 5-2 in tournament play. It has been edited above.

Still today. Eastern Brown vs Georgetown is an intense rivalry. It isn't as bitter and heated as it used to be. Georgetown left the SHAC for the Southern Buckeye in the 90's. But the games still bring the angst. Eastern and North Adams is the best rivalry now...but its unique. The players, fans, and communities cheer each other on, and there is a love and respect that is rare amongst rivals. Eastern Brown fans were really appalled by the Wheelersburg student section in the early 2000's when they dressed up in really offensive/inappropriate themed costumes...but not a rivalry, just a poor impression, it came up in the crowds conversations just last week at tournament.

What were the offensive/inappropriately themed costumes?

The Trojans and Cavaliers have played 88 times, and which CHS is the 2nd most frequent opponent all time for PHS. CHS leads the series 45-43 overall, but the Trojans lead the tournament matchups 9-4, including 4-0 in district championship games. Chillicothe beat the Trojans 3 out of 4 times in the tournament in the 1970's. CHS dominated the Trojans when the 2 were in the SEOAL from 2007--2015, but PHS did win 3 of 4 times in 2011 and 2012, both years that Portsmouth advanced to the state tournament.

Another great rivalry for Portsmouth is Ironton. IHS and PHS have played 171 times, with the Trojans leading the series 95-76. Ironton had won 10 in a row vs. PHS until the Trojans swept them this season. The 2 schools have met 15 times in the tournament, with Portsmouth leading 8-7. PHS beat Ironton 50-40 in the 2012 D3 regional final at the Convo. Ironton ended Portsmouth's 29 game winning streak dating back to 1978, as the Fighting Tigers beat the Trojans 54-52 in the Class AA district championship.

Wheelersburg vs. Portsmouth is yet another rivalry that dates back to the late 70's, though not nearly as old as the Chillicothe and Ironton series. Portsmouth leads the overall series 24-23, being one of the few schools that lead the series on the Burg. The 2 schools have met 9 times in the tournament, with PHS leading 5-4. The Pirates were up 16-12 in the series, but Portsmouth has won 12 of the last 19 matchups. The 2011 matchup in the regional semifinal was memorable, as the Burg led with 2 minutes to go on a Clay Massie 3 pointer, but PHS finally prevailed 45-39. The 1978 sectional championship at Valley HS was one that even today still stirs up great memories. The Pirates beat the Trojans in the 1984 district championship and advanced all the way to the state championship game in Class AA, losing to Akron St.Vincent St.Mary 77-71.

Dave as always nice article with all the stats and proof of ur findings!!! I remember in the 80’ when Portsmouth and ironton flip flopped gyms for sectionals. Portsmouth to Ironton and Ironton to Portsmouth. Portsmouth owned the sectional those years in Ironton gym.

Sorry for delayed response, but the costumes in question was dressing in Bib overalls bare footed, and the girls dressed up like pregnant teenagers( with pillows and all). Not an urban legend..it happened, I was present. For gosh sakes we are 20ish minutes from the Eastern suburbs of Cincinnati. It was very cringey.

Some may disagree, but I just chalk that up to cheer blocks doing cheer block things. I’m not offended by much though.

Not sure Wheelersburg has much room to call folks hillbillies, etc.

I wouldn't say its cringe, but maybe a bit "people who live in glass houses..."

In my opinion, these are very heated games that I have attended over the years:

SOC-whoever is good verse Burg..lol Burg really has no rival in the SOC as they dominate the historical head to head against the remainder of the teams.

SVC-Zane Trace verse Unioto

SHAC-Eastern Brown and Peebles

OVC Chesapeake and Fairland
