Warren 65
Tri Valley 49 a final
... Going into this season, which seems like forever ago, I had a feeling - no it wasn't indigestion- when doing my Preseason Elite rankings I looked at 72 teams and came up with THE team "I" personally thought would survive the 22 game regular season, survive the scrutiny of the win/loss record comparisons, strength of schedule, the eye test ... when I did that I chose the Warren Warriors of Coach Maddox as THE #1 team in SEO... that was back in October/November when I posted my Preseason picks - 13 weeks later the Big Bad Blue, Warren Warriors, not only finished the season at the top of all divisions as the #1 team, they have solidified their hold as the BEST team in SEOhio by beating Tri Valley in the big boy division (D2) Thursday night 65-49 ...
... looking at the roster for Tri Valley before the game, the lineup from starters to the bench had no players shorter than 6-3, all were 6-3 and 6-4 , all appeared to be footballers who WERE basketball players, all were excellent athletes with the best of the best being senior Terrell Darden ... the roster read 6-3, the eye test comparison said 6-5 ish - no matter what "test" you use - he is outstanding ... as the teams took the floor after the intros by Lou Horvath, the first thing I noticed - and I KNEW it was going to be THE matchup - Darden was going to be guarded by 5-9ish Jacob Sealey - why not! - Sealey had gone one-on-one with the giants of Linsly WVa, 6-8 Alex Kendall of Marietta etc. all season long defensively taking on the best bigs on the opposing team ... as in any game vs an "uncommon" opponent BOTH teams were feeling out their opponent ... each team turned the other over 5 times in the opening quarter ... Tri Valley opened up their offense "through the air" draining 4 of 5 three-point attempts in the period - led by jr. Max Lyall's 2 treys (6pts) , Eric Neal 1 trey and a putback bucket (5pts), Keaton Hahn with a triple and transition bucket off of a WHS turnover ... Warren attacked the rim, went inside the paint with 6-7 Trent Taylor, the big man in the middle for the Warriors hitting for 4 fgs 8 pts, all in the paint, to go with 1/2 from the line (9pts)... jr. Chase Lupardus added 2 points in the paint, Nick Cressey came off the bench for a transition bucket (2pts) to go with 1/2 from the free throw line (3pts) ... Jacob Sealey provided the lone long range 3 pointer for the Warriors (3pts) ... as the buzzer sounded - Warren 17 Tri Valley 16 after 1 ... the teams were as close to even without being even as you can get - both teams with 5 turnovers each, Tri Valley 6/12 from the floor ... Warren 7/11 from the floor ... TV got it done through air 4/5 from 3 point land ... Warren pounding it down low with 6/7 fg made in the paint ... the eye-catching stat was that THE guy for each team were nonfactors - Darden (TV) 0 pts/ Stadelman (W) 0 pts. ... adjustments - when you are playing an UN-common opponent a big part of the game is being able to make the necessary changes based on what the opposition is doing right in front of you, as both teams have studied film - but sometimes players on film either don't give you what you saw or they give you something you didn't see on film - adjustments/coaching courtside ... Warren made defensive adjustments - got out on shooters behind the arc, the 1st quarter had TV shooters spotting up behind the arc (4/5), in the 2nd shooters were forced off of their spots - results instead of 80% behind the arc/TV went 1/4 from downtown ... BOTH teams got their #1 scoring options on the napkin stat sheet in the 2nd, for Tri Valley Terrell Darden drained a 3 pointer after coming off of a hard pick on Sealey to free him up and followed with a 2 pter in the paint & one on a defensive switch (5pts) - still 0 pts with Sealey defending ... TV adjusted to the WHS perimeter D by going into the paint as Hahn added 2pts down low, Ryan Lamonica with a stickback (2pts) and Max Lyall was kept in the gym with no treys but added a transition 2pter to go with 1/2 from the charity stripe ... for Warren the Warriors too needed to get points from option one - Julian Stadelman - the smooth junior PG/SG hit a midrange jumper halfway through the period, before getting a 2 pter in the lane (4pts) ... some things you don't try to fix, if it "ain't" broke ---- Trent Taylor was playing like a senior who didn't want THIS to be his last game, the 1000 pt scorer continued to get it done in the paint, as the 6-7 senior appeared unstopable, getting 7 more pts down low (16 pts for the half) ... Chase Lupardus continued to show his strength on the boards in fighting for a putback bucket and 1/2 from the line (3pts/5 in the half) ... Warren 31 Tri Valley 29 end of 2 ... consistency - Warren going inside the paint the opening 2 quarters - Taylor/Lupardus down low, the results were the 2 pt lead but more importantly it resulted in points on each possession/shots at the rim/answers to TV's offensive efforts / outstanding shooting percentages ( Warren shot 63% in the 1st and 60% in the 2nd from the floor) ... the Warriors dropped the 3 point attempts to 2 in the 2nd 0/2 in the qtr ... 1/6 in the half ... Tri Valley with the 4/5 from 3 in the first/ cooled off with the better Warren perimeter D going but 1/3 from behind the arc in the 2nd and 5/8 in the half ... 31-29 ... 50 cents/2 qtrs in the books ... both teams adjusted offensively ... halftime's 10 minutes- time to look at the stat sheets, more adjustments based on analytics ... Tri Valley - get Darden MORE involved, make it harder on Taylor inside/fewer touches / keep pressuring Stadelman - no good looks ... Warren - keep going inside/ ride Taylor until TV shows they can stop him/ get the ball in Stadelman's hands - need to get separation ... more on ball pressure ... find a 3rd scorer ... Warren's offensive formula for the game - going inside/riding your senior Trent Taylor continued to keep Warren out front as the scoreboard showed WHS up 42-40 at 3:01 on the clock ... Tri Valley's Darden had added 3 fgs on a putback bucket over Sealey and a pair of transition 2 pters ...Eric Neal opened the frame with 2pts in the paint and Max Lyall hit his 3rd triple of the game ... for Warren Stadelman opened the 3rd period scoring with another midrange jumper, a pair of putback buckets 1 each by Taylor and Lupardus with an "& 1" , Stadelman with a strip and score in transition forced the TV timeout @ 3:01 42-40 WHS ...'ships are won with Defense, Warren knows D... the Warriors shutout Tri Valley the final 3 minutes of qtr. turning TV over 8 times in the period in getting separation with Stadelman taking another turnover the other way for 2pts/ Trent Taylor a transition & 1 and in keeping the offense running through the paint Chase Luparadus closed out the quarter with 2pt in the paint (10pts thru 3 - the 3rd scorer) ... Warren 49 Tri Valley 40 after 3 ... the Warrior's relentless, on ball defensive pressure had forced turnovers which opened the "napkin stat" - points in transition- category ... Warren had 3 fgs/6 pts in transition in the 3rd ... with gates opened wide, the WHS defense smelled blood & a regional semi W - the Warriors D, held TV to 3 fgs in the 4th period a pair TV transition buckets - 1 each by Hahn/ Kade Hindel off the bench with less than a minute to play ... a Darden drive 2pts & 3/4 FTs ... Warren's D powered 6 Warrior transition fgs in the 4th including a Trent Taylor dunk with the senior picking up 27 points for the game ... Stadelman had 3 of the picks & scores (7pts in the period/17 for the game) ... Lupardus finished off a solid game getting a transition bucket off of a Stadelman assist 2pts/ 12 pts for the game ... Nick Cressey a transition 2pts & 1/2 from the line (6 pts and an excellent defensive/physical game) ... Warren showed that they are in fact the #1 team in SE Ohio in D2 as the Warriors are coming back to the Convo to take on Maysville Saturday ... Warren 65 Tri Valley 49 a final ...
