Battle in the 740 2024 Edition

The 2nd Annual Battle in the 740 returns to Waller Gymnasium on the campus of Shawnee State University on December 14 & 15, 2024.

The event will feature teams from 12 plus counties and 15 different conferences with boys and girls games scheduled.

December 14, 2024 games include:
11am Patriot Prep vs Notre Dame
12:30pm Manchester vs Piketon
2pm Walnut Ridge vs Huntington Highlanders
3:30pm Ironton vs Fairfield Union
5pm Kettering Archbishop Hoban vs Ashland Paul Blazer
6:30pm Fairland vs Ashland Paul Blazer girls
8pm Fairland vs Eastern Brown

December 15, 2025 games include:
12:30pm Minford vs Teays Valley girls
2pm Hilliard Davidson vs Minford
3:30pm Jackson vs Lakewood Hebron
5pm Wheelersburg vs Harvest Prep
6:30pm South Point vs Washington Court House

We have another change in the Battle in the 740 scheduled to be played at Shawnee State University on December 14 and 15, 2024. Ironton was originally scheduled to play Fairfield union on Saturday december 14 but asked for a release in early September and it was granted in anticipation of a long run in the football playoffs. Portsmouth High School needed another game and was contacted and accepted the opportunity immediately to play Fairfield Union as listed on the Portsmouth Trojans spot on SEOPS
Now the Trojans have withdrawn from the event less than a month from the start of the event and after a difficult search looking for a team that needed a game New Hope Christian will play Fairfield Union. Good luck to the Tigers in the football Championship and thank you to the Coaches and Administration from New Hope Christian in stepping up and playing in this event with minimal notice. Teams profile will start to show up later this week and we look forward to seeing you at SSU on December 14 & 15, 2024.

We watched New Hope beat Wellston at the Zane Trace Tip Off Classic last week 64-46 NH ... Coach Roese is putting yet another excellent TEAM on the hardwood this season ... in the game vs Wellston, a trio of seniors led the scoring Hunter Cavanaugh punche out 14 points with 3 trey/ Xander Rink added 18 pts/ Tyler Cook lit the scoreboard up from beyond the arc with 18 pts on 6 three pointers ... Fairfield Union vs New Hope Christian Academy will be an outstanding contest at SSU ...

The Battle in the 740 returns this weekend to Shawnee State University with 2 fun filled days and 12 competitive games.Tthe event features numerous teams with returning starters including all conference, all District and All State players along with a couple of Player of the year candidates.
Saturday December 14 features six boys games and one girls games with the first game starting at 11am.On Sunday December 15 five games will be played staring at 12:30pm. Matchups and ticket information is available at www.thebattleseries.com

The first game at 11am in this years Battle in the 740 features Notre Dame from the SOC vs Patriot Prep from the greater Columbus area. The schools are both Division VII schools in the new OHSAA realignment with their eye on a District Championship. The two schools have started strong with only one two point loss between them. Both schools are favorites to either win or challenge for their league championship.

Game two which starts at 12:30pm on Saturday December 14 has the Manchester Greyhounds of the SHAC taking on the Piketon Red Streaks from the SVC. Manchester is the fvaorite for a league title in the small Division of the SHAC but will faces a strong challenge from a school larger in size in Piketon.

The cheer squads of all four schools will be on the sidelines cheering their team on

Game three in the Battle in the 740 finds Walnut Ridge from the Columbus City League playing the Huntington High Highlanders. Walnut Ridge was a district semi finalist in D1 last season in the Central District and Huntington was in the Final Four in West Virginia.
The Ridge was one of the smallest D! schools in the State in the past and will be D3 in the new OHSAA alignment. in spite of that they advanced to the Regional and District finals many times and captured the coveted City League Championship a couple of times in the past five years.
Huntington has been a powerhouse in West Virginia basketball for years and returned to the State tournament last year under HHS alum Lambros Svingos.
This game will be played at a quick pace and will feature numerous potential college athletes

Game four on Saturday December 14 at 3;30pm at SSU has Fairfield Union from the Mid State league coming South to take on New Hope Christian Academy. Fairfield Union has been a consistent winner/ challenger in the Mid State League and Southeastern District tournament. this year's version lost a few starters from last year but is playing well and getting better each game. Their opponent is New Hope Christian who is a non OHSAA school but plays a OHSAA schedule and is a worthy opponent for Fairfield Union.

Game five starts at 5pm an features the 2024 Division two State Champion in Ohio in Archbishop Alter playing Ashland Paul Blazer High who was in the Sweet 16 in Kentucky losing to the eventual state Champion. Both teams return numerous starters and D! signees who are candidates for Player of the year in their respective states. Get their early to watch these two teams and the players they bring with them

Game six features the only girls game on Saturday December 14 at SSU. Fairland advanced to the Final four last year and came within one point short of playing in the finals. They are back and strong again as they are off and running to an undefeated season again. Thier opponent themselves in a team that is looking to returning to the Kentucky Sweet Sixteen in Ashland Paul Blazer High School.

We close out the day with a great matchup at 8pm with the Fairland boys of coach Speed facing off against Eastern Brown ed by Coach Rob Buechle. Both teams have the potential to win their respective league and make a long run in the OHSAA tournamant

We close out the 2024 edition of the Battle in the 740 on Sunday December 15 with five games featuring 3 teams from the Central District and seven teams from the Southeast District.

The first game is a girls games featuring the Minford Falcon girls who was a District quaiifier last year facing the Teays Valley Vikings who is a member of the OCC and who also advanced to the district tournament in Division 1 in the Central District.
Both teams feature good and aggressive defenses..
The second game at 2pm features another OCC opponent in Hilliard Davidson who is off to a good start under a new coach with a young team. They take on the boys Minford Falcons who are favored to win the SOC and are poised to make a long tournament run

On day two the third game with a 330pm start features the Jackson IRonmen a member of the Frontier conference playing host to Lakewood from the Muskingum County League. Jackson returns a young team from last year and is rate n tPfloyd's elite eight and is playing another team that has most of starters returning and trying o establish a solid program

Game 4 on Sunday December t5 at 5pm harvest Prep returns for a game with Wheelersburg again this year. Prep advanced to the Final Four last year and features to be in the mix for a State title again this year. The Burg always presents a challenge to any team and will force Prep into playing a clean game

South Point and South Point face off in the finale at 8pm on Sunday. Both teams ares upposedly in a rebuilding mode but have started well and look to continue to develop
