Gallia Academy 32
Chesapeake 47 a final

... made the drive back down to the river, the French City - Gallipolis to taken in Gallia Academy hosting Chesapeake High School in an OVC matchup ... the 'Peake Panthers of Coach Ater is the favorite to repeat as OVC Champs this season while GAHS has kicked off it's season playing the best that the SE district has to offer up in Warren, Meigs & now Chesapeake among it's opening 5 games on the 2024 side of their pocket-schedules ... only 2 seniors on the floor in the starting lineups for both teams (1 each team) - for the 'peake sr. guard Ethan Kerns got the nod and for Gallia Academy Cade Mock was the loan senior at the center court jump circle ... when I looked at the lineups my first impression was - youngsters everywhere - if there's a winner for the most underclassmen in the opening starting 5 - GAHS got the W as the Blue Devils went with freshman PG Ty Reed, freshman 2 guard Grant Owens, soph forward Rees Toler , jr. guard Ethan Rose joining Mock at center court for the jump ball... for the Panthers soph Maddox Kazee joined 3 juniors - Kaden Perkins/Phillip Thacker/ Karson Frecka completed the starters joining Ethan Kerns ... both teams brought size to the table - CHS with 6-5 Frecka/6-3 Perkins & 6-7 sr Jacob Skeens off the bench ... for GAHS, Mock stands at 6-7, Toler 6-2, soph Gabe Hammons joins the group at 6-5 ... the size factor was a wash for the 'peake - Thacker 1 fg/6 points on the game ... Frecka 2 fgs/4 pts and Skeens 0 fgs/0 pts for the night ... for the Blue Devils Mock added 9pts/ Hammons 5pts/ Toler 0 pts ... basically even up ... yet when you look at what remains on the floor the decided advantage goes to /went to the Panthers - varsity experience, experienced talent favored the visiting Purple & White ... Chesapeake 47 Gallia Academy 32 a final ...

... the opening quarter of action was all Chesapeake as the Panthers dropped in 16 pts - 6-2 soph Maddox Kazee led the way with 7 pts ( a trey and 2 fgs in the paint) ... sr. Ethan Kerns added 5 points with a triple and a fg in the lane (5pts) ... jr. Kaden Perkins chipped in 2pts in the paint and a transition bucket (4pts) ... the 'peake defense forced 6 Blue Devil turnovers - 2 on changes of possession on blocks in the paint ... the bigs in the paint for the 'peake even with GAHS "winning" the "points by bigs" napkin stat the bigs for Chesapeake were the big factor in keeping the inside presence of Mock and Hammons in check offensively until the 2nd half ... the Mock/Hammons duo had a total of 3 pts in the opening half all from the FT line ... I counted 5 blocked shots in the opening 2 qtrs for the 'peake bigs/ 3 resulting in changes of possession/turnovers on my napkin stat sheet ... for GAHS the freshmen guards were the only players to dent the stat sheet in points -Ty Reed led the scoring with 5 pts including a 3 ball & transition bucket/ Grant Owens added a drive to the rim for 2 pts ... Chesapeake 16 Gallia Academy 7 after 1 ... Gallia Academy won the 2nd quarter point total 7-6 ... as both teams had 4 turnovers apiece ... for Gallia Academy, only 2 fgs - one each for Reed & Owens with the rest of the scoring coming from Hammons 1/2 from the line and Mock 2/2 from the stripe ...... for the 'Peake 6-5 jr Karson Frecka with 4 pts and Kazee with a 2 pter in transition ... neither team was lighting it up from the outside as the Peake was 2/8 from beyond the arc and GAHS 1/8 ... Chesapeake 22 Gallia Academy 14 at the half ... in the 3rd, Hammons and Mock were on the floor at the same time in the paint for GAHS ... defensively keeping CHS' Frecka/Thacker/Skeens off the scoreboard - Thacker with 2 pts in the 3rd was all for the CHS Bigs in the paint ...this left the scoring to perimeter players to either score from outside or get into the paint - Kaden Perkins scored on a drive , finishing at the rim 2pts/ Kazee with a putback bucket 2pts and his 2nd trey of the game 5pts/14 on the game ... the Gallia Academy Bigs worked inside to get on the napkin stat sheet with fgs - Mock with 2pts in the paint & a putback bucket (4pts/6 on the night thru 3) ... Hammons with a nice drive baseline for 2pts and a shot in the paint for 2 pts /4pts in the qtr ... the freshmen continued to pitch in points as Reed scored on a strip and score 2pts/ Owen thru down a corner triple 3pts ... Chesapeake 33 Gallia Academy 27 after 3 ... in the final period the story was Gallia Academy turned the ball over 9 times ... only 1 fg (an offensive board & putback by Cade Mock) ... 3/6 from the FT line ... Chesapeake only had 3 fgs in the final 8 minutes (2 by Perkins/1 for sr Drew Plantz off the bench) ... the Panthers went to the foul line for 12 FTs dropping 8 ... game over ... Chesapeake 47 Gallia Academy 32 a final ...

Good write up Pfloyd, we were off offensively as we missed alot of easy baskets. Defensively I think won the game for the Peake.
Next up South Point on Thursday away.

... agreed peake71, the bigs inside for the Peake kept Mock from doing Cade Mock things ... which forced GAHS to beat them from the perimeter - Owens/Rose can BOTH shoot the ball from 3 - last night they had some athletes with length running at them in Kazee/Frecka on the wings ... the GAHS guards will learn from last night ... on another note - the bigs for CHS weren't the only reason the bigs for GAHS couldn't put the ball on the rim - Kazee/Kerns/Thacker all collapsed inside on both Mock and Hammons - when they got boards or got the ball inside there were hands raking the ball from everywhere - no clean looks , all good D by the Peake ... on the GAHS side - there's something to be said for "not bringing the ball down" but if you do "rip it through" and go back up ... when that ball comes down below the waist you aren't a big anymore ...

The Blue Devils are a work in progress ... they have 2 good bigs in Mock & Hammons - the youngsters have to learn how to feed the post/they'll get there ... I STILL feel this group for GAHS will be a handful after Christmas moving into the 2025 portion of the schedule - inside game/ shooters on the perimeter in Owens/Rose/Watts/Reed ... more youngsters off the bench - Sola/Houck ... ALL will get valuable varsity minutes and "learning" moments ... GAHS is building for next year but will get "theirs" in round 2 thru the OVC ...

... Chesapeake - I need to see them in another game ... means I have to drive another 45 minutes down the river from the French City (2 & a half hour drives) to do it ... LOL ...

... good to talk some hoops with you last night peake71, thanks for introducing me to Chesapeake's Maddox Kazee - outstanding talent ... !!! ...

Great to see you a 2nd time in a handful of days!

I would say that wasn't the most crisp Peake will look this season, but give Gallia credit. They played hard and they are going to be a brute in the OVC if those kids stay together and continue to improve.

It is always great to talk basketball Pfloyd. The Peake plays at South Point Thursday and then Friday vs Lincoln county Wv at Cabell Midland and will play either Cabell Midland or Point Pleasant. 4 away games this week then home on the 27th vs Adena.
Your always welcome at the Peake , since you were there last they lightened the floor and new purple bleachers.

As far as I know fairland hasn’t had any bball girls players transfer in. They hardly ever get transfers. I’ve been watching them for years and honestly can’t remember one. Who is it that transferred to the girls team?

They have some girls in elementary that transferred. I think 5th grade. Maybe 6th.
