... the Mark Porter 2024 Spartan Classic is in the books ... the organizers do an outstanding job getting quality teams in the classic, an even better job putting together matchups that are worth the price of admission ($6 for the day) ... Jerry Crow and Co. were already lining up/getting team commitments for the 2025 edition of the Classic ... "thank you" Lou Horvath the Voice of SEOhio basketball for allowing pfloyd to share a portion of the scorers table for the Saturday games ! - always a good 8 1/2 hours of hoops/life conversation ... great job Alexander High School ! pfloyd will return for the next edition of the Spartan Classic ...

... Pfloyd IMO's ... key napkin stat "Points in Transition" Coach McClanahan's troops turned the Buckeyes over 21 times in the game taking 7 of those turnovers to the house for 14 pts ... the Westsiders have no seniors in the starting 5 ... put a star beside the Senators for the 25-26 season ... the duo of 6-3 jr. Will Kegley/ 6-4 jr. Logan Wolfenbarker is special ... Nelsonville York - turnovers/giving up transition buckets to go with allowing 34 pts at the rim in the paint ... tough to get a W with that combination ... NY is very athletic, can get scoring from the entire lineup as 7 of 9 players in the rotation added to the napkin stat sheet with points ..

Pfloyd IMOs - the Logan Chieftains , new head coach in Coach Rob Hayes - outstanding ... first season playing in the OCC party vs teams out of C'bus ... 1-6 entering this one ... 1-0 vs SE district teams as the Chiefs beat Vinton County earlier in the season ... youngsters - a starting lineup of 2 sophs/1 freshman/1 junior/1 senior ... off the bench 2 jrs/1 soph/ 2 srs in the 10 man rotation ... youngsters, not only getting their first varsity experience but vs OCC competition - a tough draw for any roster ... pluses for LHS - Coach Hayes has the entire group playing with intensity, he teaches/coaches up the players for 32 minutes, the Chiefs have a good one in Coach Hayes ... 6-1 fr. Hudson Edwards - might be THE best freshman shooting guard I've seen so far this season - smooth, elevates with his jumper, can score at all 3 levels - outstanding ... Owen Bell 6-3 jr. in his 3rd year starting at the varsity level - playing for the first time healthy in his 3rd varsity season, has improved his ball handling, scores at the rim off the dribble, battles in the paint as an undersized post player ... the biggest takeaway for me is the physical defensive play of the entire Logan roster - excellent on ball pressure all over the court ... I talked to Waverly's Coach Bradley briefly, congratulated his team on an outstanding effort in the game, told Coach that this one was a great test for his Tigers - the physical play vs Logan WHS wasn't going to see it from the majority of their opponents in SE Ohio - they passed the physicality test with the W ... an outstanding fr. PG in Kage Alexander , as a team the Tigers had only 13 turnovers vs the 32 minutes of pressure D from Logan ... Teagan Hurt 6-2 soph. can play for any team in SE Ohio - scores in the paint/in transition/ at the rim/has the midrange jumper to go with range beyond the 3 point line / finished off the game at the line going 8/8 in the 4th quarter ... Waverly starts 4 sophs - Hurt, Gunnar Myers (6-3), Sawyer Myers (6-5), Landyn Russell (6-3) ... 1 freshman 5-11 Alexander ... 7 man rotation, scoring from all 7 players ... Waverly - can beat anyone on their schedule THIS year but the varsity experience this season will have the Tigers looking at the thin air of the Elite 8 in the 2025-26 season ...

Pfloyd IMOs - the organizers of the Spartan Classic made it tough on pfloyd AGAIN, as they pitted 2 of my favorite basketball programs in SEOhio together - the Warren Warriors of Coach Maddox and the Fairland Dragons of Coach Speed ... both teams - defense the way it should be played - physical/bodies on bodies/redirection of the offensive players/ on ball pressure ... fundamentals, fundamentals and more fundamentals - I was tired of smiling as I watched these teams go at it ... 2 outstanding PG's battling at both ends - Brody Buchanan for Fairland/ Julian Stadleman for Warren ... Buchanan committed to RIO , Stadleman (?) both play at the next level ... Fairland was one of the teams "where pfloyd was wrong" in the preseason - FHS lost 90% of the scoring from a year ago due to graduation ... Buchanan was the only proven, consistent scorer returning - enter jr. 6-3 Cliff Fransen/sr 6-3 Keegan Smith, jr 6-0 Trevor Lochow - the trio along with Buchanan have proven themselves 4 of the best 3 point shooters in SEOhio as well as being finishers at the rim ... a surprise addition - sr. Gabe Polcyn- returning to the group is a 6-3 post player - Polcyn played through the 8th grade with this group of seniors on outstanding basketball teams - he focused his talents in becoming an outstanding soccer player in SEOhio for the Dragons ... the 6-3 Polcyn returned to the hardwood for this his senior season ... he has quickly become the center point in the high post offense of Coach Speed - excellent vision in finding the open man on the patented FHS motion offense , a recipient in the "pick and roll" & deliverer of the ball on backdoor cuts ... Polcyn is an outstanding rebounder at just 6-3 ... 5 talented players, all with the ability to score the ball at the rim or from the perimeter - makes for a dangerous TEAM as they have proven with 2 big wins over SHAC powers - North Adams/Eastern Brown/one of those foreign powers in Russell, Ky and league foe South Point ... Warren entered the game coming off of a loss at the Marietta College River Classic vs D6 power Monroe Central 48-59 ... a game that saw WHS getting only 5 pts in the paint from it's 2 bigs (6-3 Chase Lupardus and 6-5 Hayden Wells) ... Stadelman hit for 25 pts but not nearly enough to pull the Warriors to a W ... vs Fairland Stadelman hit for 17 pts - check , while the inside game of Lupardus (22 pts) / Wells 3 pts / along with sr. Connor Barry 9 pts (0 vs Monroe Central) gave the Warriors the multiple scorers needed to get the W vs the Dragons ... Warren played 9 while the Dragons achilles heal is the lack of depth - only playing 6 but mainly the original starters for 4 qtrs ... Warren took advantage of it's depth off the bench in the 32 minute up and down/pressure D game ...

Waterford 44
Alexander 49 a final

Pfloyd's IMOs - for one of, if not the first time this season the Spartans of Coach Jordan Hill led at every quarter break : 13-12, 25-22, 35-27 and the one that counts most 49-44 after 4 qtrs ... a 1-7 team entering the game Alexander plays hard, Coach Hill "teaches" for 32 minutes, "coaches up" for 32 minutes - outstanding job by he and the Alexander staff ... AHS has a couple of varsity veterans in sr. post player 5-11 Isaac Waller (who inch for inch plays as hard as any player in SEOhio in the paint) and sr. 5-7 PG Mason Morris (10 pts) - senior leadership, when the seniors leave, their legacy is the underclassmen they leave behind/the team in the year that follows their graduating - these 2 will have left examples of never quitting, giving 100% win or lose, and "improving means never being satisfied"... if you are a coach you WANT these 2 players on YOUR team ... Alexander has one of the better freshmen PG's in the TVC 5-11 Jace Cooper (17pts) ... Waterford had the decided height advantage with 6-3, 6-3 size in the paint - never took advantage down low with only 7 fg in the paint/14 pts on the game ... 21 pts from a nice looking soph Finn Pennock led the way for WHS ...

One adjustment: #5 for Waverly is sophomore Landyn Russell. Eli Hobbs is injured and is now #24 for the Tigers
Re: Spartan Classic in the Alley @ Alexander High School - Napkin Stats & IMOs
I had the numbers crossed on my sheet ... I edited it ... the Tigers are EVEN BETTER than I posted ... talented group for sure ... fun to watch for sure ... even more impressed by how well they handled the on ball pressure of Logan ... youth will be up and down but this group will be more up than down imo on talent alone ...danicalifornia wrote: Mon Dec 30, 2024 12:35 am One adjustment: #5 for Waverly is sophomore Landyn Russell. You’re welcome! I was really impressed with Alexander on Friday, some negatives in the turnover department but that’ll come with being a freshman against some experienced defenders.pfloyd wrote: Mon Dec 30, 2024 1:07 amI had the numbers crossed on my sheet ... … my original sheet I filled out ahead of time with the roster on … wait for it - MaxPreps ! Because MaxPreps info is always right ! lol … I didn’t even think to compare it to the program … my fault in trusting MaxPreps I guess …danicalifornia wrote: Mon Dec 30, 2024 1:14 amYou’re welcome! Really good game summaries and team evaluations Pfloyd. I watched Monroe Central Saturday at Marietta College and they are just flat-out excellent. Not going to lose many.
Re: Spartan Classic in the Alley @ Alexander High School - Napkin Stats & IMOs
MC is an excellent TEAM with outstanding individual ballers that work/play well as a unit at both ends of the floor … in the Warren game the Warriors as a team played one of the least inspiring games I’ve seen from this group … bigs bringing the ball down on rebounds or when they got the ball in the paint - each time raked out by MC defenders… for the first time I saw Warren starters looking to be “going thru the motions” … sometimes it’s the “holiday break” that has players “out of their basketball routine” ; as much as I love hoops the holidays always make it hard to stay focused … MC was definitely focused lol …Hookshot wrote: Mon Dec 30, 2024 8:38 am Really good game summaries and team evaluations Pfloyd. Re: Spartan Classic in the Alley @ Alexander High School - Napkin Stats & IMOs
... thank you everyone who has read my posts on this thread AND caught errors that I made - daniC & smurray for catching the Hobbs in for Russell and , Val13 caught where I had Ironton's Schreck & Barnes in the 3 point stat line for Fairland LOL ... I've corrected those errors ... I DO have good excuses for both BUT I'll own up to them and say that I'll do better ... I do apologize to the players who I mistakenly omitted - Landyn Russell 6-3 soph for Waverly (7pts)- played an excellent game for the Tigers in their W over Logan ... and the entire Fairland group of starters who I omitted and subbed in the Ironton players (not sure I can show my face in Proctorville after THAT kind of error LOL) ... Brody Buchanan 3 treys, Trevor Lochow 2, Cliff Fransen 2, Keegan Smith 2 in all the Dragons were 9/22 from beyond the arc for the game - excellent team/individual napkin stat line ...
Re: Spartan Classic in the Alley @ Alexander High School - Napkin Stats & IMOs
That kid was face guarded full court and double teamed all night long. He dropped 23 and was knocking down shots from all over the floor. (Live game stream is on SOSA for anyone that’s interested). And you’re talking about a couple of turnovers, again. Hmm.danicalifornia wrote: Mon Dec 30, 2024 1:14 amYou’re welcome!
