Fairland 65
Ironton 51 a final
Ironton sat at (3-2) entering the game @ Fairland (7-1) ... coming off of a deep run into the Football season ending with a state 'ship - not surprising that IHS would take time to get into roundball shape, add to the mix or subtract from the mix one of the best guards in SEOhio in sr. Shaun Terry who opted to graduate early and take his game - football- to D1 Missouri as an early enrollee (we wish him the best!) ... the Tigers have spent the 2024 portion of the season looking for TEAM to find/handle their new roles ... led by 6-3 sr. Braden Schreck. - proven scorer averaging close to 20ppg, 6-3 soph Ashton Layne - outstanding freshman season - looking to continue as now the #2 scorer, add to the mix a solid group of seniors in Markel Cotton (started as a jr)/ off the bench last year was Tyler Roach and Judah Barnes - both with varsity experience but Barnes with the unenviable job of replacing Terry at the PG position ... Ironton is a solid team, beating lesser teams (Gallia 2-7, South Point 3-5, Greenup County 2-7) having lost to Minford/Spring Valley entering the game last night - all expected in figuring out player roles etc. ... I'town will be a force in the OVC this season ...
... both teams opened the game getting players involved, as both teams had 4 of their 5 starters dent the scoreboard ... for Fairland - 6-3 sr. Gabe Polcyn led the Dragons with 6 pts, all at the rim - a basket off the blocks/ 2pts in transition & a putback bucket for 2 ... 6-3 sr. Keegan Smith added 5 pts with a three ball and a jumper inside the arc ... 6-3 jr Cliff Fransen picked up the first trey of the game for FHS-3pts ... and the floor leader for the Dragons 5-10 sr. Brody Buchanan hit a midrange lefthanded jumper for 2pts ... the Tigers were paced in the opening frame by Braden Schreck 6-3 sr. shooting guard, Schreck hit a 3 ball & floater in the lane , 5pts ... A 6-3 soph Ashton Layne scored on back to back drives to the rim with the 2nd an " & 1" 5pts in the qtr ... Judah Barnes hit a 3 pointer to go with Markel Cotton's jumper for 2pts ... Fairland 16 Ironton 15 after one ... as the opening quarter was "get everyone involved" the 2nd period narrowed the scoring responsibility down to 2 players for each team as each team's "scorer" asserted themselves as THE "go to guy" ... for Ironton Schreck went 4/4 from the FT line to go with his 3rd drive to the rim - 6pts ... Markel Cotton followed suit, taking the ball to the rim down the lane for 2pts, Tyler Roach came off the bench to add 1/2 from the line to finish off the IHS scoring in the qtr. ... Fairland was led by Buchanan's 13 pts in the period ... the lefty playmaker followed the Schreck lead - taking the ball to the rack - Buchanan scored on 2 drives & finishes 5pts that inlcuded an & 1/ drove the paint & got fouled on 2 separate drives 4/4 from the line ... in between the drives & FTs Buchanan hit a jumper inside the arc and a floater across the lane ... 13pts/15 for the half ... Cliff Fransen, scored on his own drive to the rim and dropped a triple from behind the arc on a Polcyn dish from inside out ... 5 pts in the qtr for Fransen 8 for the opening 2 qtrs ... Fairland outscored Ironton 18-9 in the qtr.... Fairland 34 Ironton 24 at the half ... Braden Schreck looked like he was accepting that HE was the man in the offense - the QB1 was now Scorer1 as the senior drained 2 triples and another drive down the lane for a total of 8 pts/19 thru 3 ... the only other scorer for I'town was Maddix Markel off the bench putting down a drive & finish for 2pts ... Fairland could have opened this one up on the scoreboard but for turning the ball over 4 times in the period... Buchanan continued to work on his free throw shooting as he went to the line 3 times in the period connecting on 5/6 FTs to go with a 2 pointer in the paint ... with Buchanan owning the lane - either scoring at the rim or going to the stripe for 2 shots each time - Fransen & Smith spotted up on the perimeter for a 3 pointer each in the qtr. as the Dragons extended the lead as the quarter ended ... Fairland 47 Ironton 34 after 3 ... Ironton's Schreck continued to carry the load of the scoring in the final qtr as he put up 10 points in the period hitting a pair 3 balls , along with 2 shots in the paint to finish with 29 pts on the night ...Ashton Layne scored his only fg since the 1st period with a drive & finish at the rim 2pts... Carson Freeman added a triple 3pts to close out the Tiger scoring on the night ... Buchanan & Schreck have battled on basketball courts in Southern Ohio since they were in elemenary school, middle school and high school ... Buchanan matched the Schreck scoring as the PG was put on the line for 8 FTs in the period making 7 ... add a 2 pt drive and finish ... in all Buchanan went to the line for 19 FT attempts in the 2nd half netting 17 ... in the 4th period FHS went to the line 14 times converting on 10 ... Trevor Lochow the jr. off guard added a his only fg on the night - a 3 pointer from the wing ... Keegan Smith knocked down his 3rd three pointer of the game ... Brody Buchanan 31 Braden Schreck 29 in the game within the game ... Fairland 65 Ironton 51 a final ... Ironton (3-3) , Fairland (8-1)
